There is no universal outcome. A price increase, cancellation, refund, or shutdown is governed by the provider’s current terms, your billing channel (the provider, Apple, or Google Play), the plan’s billing period, and consumer law where you live. OpenAI’s published Terms of Use promise at least 30 days’ notice before a subscription increase takes effect at the next renewal and a refund for prepaid, unused services if it discontinues its services. Anthropic says prices and plans may change at its discretion and that payments are generally non-refundable, subject to its Consumer Terms and applicable law. Those are provider-specific policies, not an industry-wide guarantee.

What can actually change when an AI service changes its prices?

A provider can change the amount charged, the plans it offers, the features included in a plan, or the availability of new sign-ups and upgrades. Your existing subscription does not automatically receive the same treatment as a new subscription, so read the notice and the terms that apply to your account and country.

OpenAI: a stated notice period and next-renewal effective date

OpenAI’s Terms of Use state: “If we increase our subscription prices, we will give you at least 30 days’ notice and any price increase will take effect on your next renewal so that you can cancel if you do not agree to the price increase.” This is a commitment in OpenAI’s published terms. It is not a 30-day rule for every AI company.

The wording means a higher amount should not be applied partway through the billing period covered by your current payment. The notice should give you time to decide whether to cancel before the next renewal. Mandatory consumer protections in your jurisdiction can provide additional rights; OpenAI’s terms say they do not override mandatory local cancellation rights.

Anthropic: plans and prices may change at its discretion

Anthropic’s Claude pricing page says plans and prices are subject to change at its discretion. The cited page does not specify a universal notice period for an increase. It also says payments are generally non-refundable except where its Consumer Terms or local law provide otherwise. Check the notice delivered for your specific plan and location rather than assuming OpenAI’s notice standard applies.

A plan change is not the same as a shutdown

An AI company can pause new sign-ups, stop upgrades to a plan, retire a tier, or change included features without ending every service. For example, an OpenAI help page describes a temporary pause on new sign-ups and upgrades to a particular plan while describing separate effects for existing customers. That illustrates a plan-availability change, not proof that the provider is shutting down.

What to check in a price-change notice

Save the message and check each item before the next billing date:

  • New amount: confirm the currency, tax treatment, and whether the figure is monthly or annual.
  • Effective date: determine whether the change starts at your next renewal or on another stated date.
  • Your renewal date: a notice date and an effective date are not necessarily the same as the date your card will be charged.
  • Plan scope: verify whether the notice applies to your current tier, a grandfathered rate, a trial conversion, or a promotional price.
  • Cancellation route: identify whether you must cancel on the provider’s website, in Apple subscriptions, or in Google Play.
  • Local terms: review the consumer terms and any country-specific rights that apply to your transaction.

If you do not accept the new price, cancel through the billing channel before its stated deadline and keep the confirmation. Do not rely on simply ignoring the notice.

What cancellation usually does to your access

For consumer plans, cancellation normally turns off the next renewal while leaving paid features available until the end of the current billing period. It is therefore different from deleting an account, uninstalling an app, or requesting a refund.

OpenAI subscriptions

OpenAI’s support guidance says cancellation stops future renewals and paid features remain available until the current billing period ends. It advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the next billing date. The correct steps depend on where you purchased the subscription: the OpenAI website, Apple’s App Store, Google Play, or self-service Business billing.

Deleting an account does not cancel an Apple-billed subscription. Check the Apple subscription first, then delete the account only if that is still what you intend.

Anthropic subscriptions

Anthropic says a paid Claude cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, with paid access continuing until then. Its guidance also recommends cancelling at least 24 hours before the next billing date and using the platform where you signed up.

Google Play subscriptions

Google Play expressly says uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. If an app is removed from Google Play, Google’s general guidance says future renewals for the associated subscription will be cancelled, but that does not mean previously paid time is automatically refunded.

Cancellation is not an automatic refund

Stopping a future charge and recovering an earlier charge are separate actions. A cancellation generally preserves access through the period already paid for; it does not, by itself, reverse that payment.

OpenAI refund rules described in its support guidance

OpenAI says cancellation does not automatically refund previous charges. Its refund guidance identifies possible review for a verified OpenAI billing error, validated unauthorized charges, or a documented OpenAI service or access failure. An accidental purchase, forgetting to cancel, dissatisfaction, or a plan change does not by itself qualify outside an applicable exception. These examples describe eligibility factors, not a guarantee that a request will be approved.

Submit a separate refund request using the route that applies to your purchase. Web and Google Play purchases follow different procedures from Apple-billed purchases, and eligibility can depend on your location.

Anthropic’s general position

Anthropic’s cited pricing information says payments are generally non-refundable, subject to its Consumer Terms and applicable law. That statement does not eliminate any rights granted by local law or a more specific term covering your transaction.

Google Play’s general position

Google Play’s general cancellation guidance says customers normally retain access for the time already paid and usually do not receive a refund for past subscription periods, subject to exceptions. Its partial-refund guidance describes routes for users in Israel, France, Germany, and New York State under different conditions and timing. Those regional rules should not be presented as a worldwide entitlement.

What happens if the provider shuts down?

A shutdown question is different from a price increase. The key issue is whether the provider’s terms promise anything for prepaid, unused time and whether the service actually stops before that time expires.

OpenAI’s explicit discontinuation clause

OpenAI’s Terms of Use state: “We may decide to discontinue our Services, but if we do, we will give you advance notice and a refund for any prepaid, unused Services.” The limitation matters: the promise concerns prepaid, unused services. It does not say that every historical subscription payment or every prior month is refunded.

If a discontinuation notice arrives, save the notice, your receipt, and evidence of the unused portion. Follow the instructions in the notice or the provider’s support process, and check whether the refund is handled by OpenAI, Apple, or Google Play.

Do not assume another provider has the same promise

The cited Anthropic materials do not establish a universal shutdown-refund commitment. Its general statement that payments are non-refundable, subject to its Consumer Terms and local law, is not enough to predict every possible provider-initiated shutdown scenario. Read the current terms for the exact service and plan.

Who bills you determines where you act

Billing source Where to cancel Refund considerations
AI provider website Account or billing settings on that provider’s site Use the provider’s stated support or refund process; terms and eligibility apply.
Apple App Store Apple’s subscription management controls Apple’s process and rules govern the transaction; deleting the AI account is not a substitute for cancelling here.
Google Play Google Play subscriptions Google Play’s cancellation and location-specific refund rules apply; uninstalling the app is not cancellation.
Business or self-service billing The organization’s billing console or contract process Business agreements can differ from consumer terms; check the contract and administrator controls.

The merchant shown on your receipt is the quickest way to identify the correct route. A provider may be the company delivering the AI while an app store is the company processing the payment.

How to protect yourself before a renewal or shutdown

  1. Find the receipt. Record the merchant name, plan, currency, billing period, and transaction date.
  2. Confirm the next renewal. Check the account or store subscription page and note the exact renewal date and amount.
  3. Save the live terms and notice. Keep a copy showing the price, effective date, plan, and cancellation instructions.
  4. Compare the dates. Make sure the stated notice period leaves enough time to cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal where the provider recommends that buffer.
  5. Cancel in the correct system. Use the provider, Apple, or Google Play controls identified by the receipt.
  6. Verify renewal is off. Look for a cancellation confirmation and a changed renewal status; keep the email or screenshot.
  7. Request a refund separately if appropriate. Explain the relevant billing error, unauthorized charge, service failure, shutdown, or local-law basis and attach the receipt.
  8. For prepaid plans, calculate unused time. If a provider’s terms promise a discontinuation refund, identify the portion that was paid for but could no longer be used.

Common mistakes and how to recover

“I deleted the app, so billing stopped.”

It did not necessarily stop. Google Play says uninstalling does not cancel a subscription. Reinstall or open the store’s subscription page, cancel there, and confirm the status.

“I cancelled, so I should receive a refund.”

Cancellation usually prevents the next renewal while preserving current access. Submit a distinct refund request and check the provider or store’s eligibility rules.

“The provider gave notice, so every customer has 30 days.”

At least 30 days is the commitment stated in OpenAI’s Terms of Use for its subscription price increases. Anthropic’s cited pricing page does not state the same universal period. Use the notice and terms for your own provider, plan, and location.

“A shutdown must refund all payments.”

Refund rights depend on the provider’s wording, the unused prepaid period, the billing platform, and local law. OpenAI’s clause is limited to prepaid, unused services; it is not an industry-wide rule.

“I can wait until the charge appears.”

Waiting can allow an unwanted renewal. Cancel before the provider’s deadline, preferably at least 24 hours before the next billing date when that is the stated guidance, and retain proof.

How to compare subscription payment risk

Question Why it matters What to record
How much notice is promised for a price increase? It determines how much time you have to reject a higher renewal. Notice period, delivery method, and effective date.
When does cancellation take effect? You need to know whether paid access continues and when renewal stops. Cancellation deadline and end of paid period.
Are ordinary cancellations refundable? Most policies separate stopping renewal from recovering past charges. Non-refundable language and listed exceptions.
Is provider discontinuation covered? A shutdown can strand prepaid time unless the terms address it. Any promise for prepaid, unused services.
Who processes the payment? The billing platform controls cancellation and often the refund workflow. Provider, Apple, Google Play, or business merchant on the receipt.
What local rights apply? Mandatory consumer rules can supplement or override contract language. Country or state and the applicable current rules.

Questions to ask before you subscribe or renew

  • Is the price fixed for my current term, and how will an increase be announced?
  • Does a higher price begin at renewal or earlier?
  • How far before renewal must I cancel?
  • Will I keep paid features until the end of the period?
  • Are refunds available for accidental charges, service failures, or unauthorized payments?
  • What happens to unused annual or other prepaid time if the provider discontinues the service?
  • Will the provider or an app store handle cancellation and refunds?

Bottom line for consumers

Treat every AI subscription as a contract with three separate events: a price change, a cancellation, and a refund. OpenAI’s stated terms provide a concrete example—at least 30 days’ notice for a subscription increase at the next renewal, plus advance notice and a refund for prepaid, unused services if it discontinues its services. Anthropic’s cited terms allow price and plan changes at its discretion and generally describe payments as non-refundable, subject to its Consumer Terms and local law. In every case, identify the billing merchant, check the renewal date, cancel through the correct platform, and make any refund request separately.
