There is no universal rule that automatically deletes, transfers, or unlocks your AI conversations when you die. What happens depends on the provider, account type, retention settings, inactivity rules, and whether anyone makes a formal request. Text chats, transcripts, original voice recordings, uploaded files, and work-account data can each follow different rules. If you want a particular person to receive or delete anything, you need to arrange that while you can still manage the account.
Death is not a standard deletion trigger
Consumer AI services generally describe retention in terms of account settings, user deletion, automatic expiry, inactivity, legal or security exceptions, and administrator-controlled policies. The provider guidance considered here does not establish a cross-service rule that death itself causes an account to disappear or that relatives automatically inherit its contents.
That means a family member normally cannot assume that an AI history will be available, nor that it has already been erased. Access may require a provider review, an advance designation, an administrator process, or a lawful request that differs by country. An account password is not the same thing as an authorized transfer: giving someone credentials could expose unrelated email, files, payment information, and private conversations.

Why “AI data” is not one thing
Before making a plan, separate the material you want preserved or removed. A single voice interaction can create several records:

- Text conversation: the prompts and responses saved in chat history.
- Voice transcript: text produced from dictation or a live voice session.
- Original audio: the recording used for transcription or retained from a voice feature.
- Video, screen sharing, or live-session data: where a service supports those features.
- Files and other shared content: documents, images, or data uploaded during a conversation.
- Account and activity records: settings, personalization data, memory features, product information, and location-related data.
A deletion control may cover one category but not another. A temporary-chat setting may change history retention without making every processing copy disappear immediately. A work account can also be governed by an employer’s retention policy rather than by the individual user.
OpenAI and ChatGPT
Chats remain until deletion or a workspace rule
OpenAI’s consumer guidance says regular and archived chats stay saved to the account until the user deletes them or an applicable workspace retention policy removes them. When a chat is deleted, it is scheduled for permanent removal within 30 days, subject to exceptions. OpenAI may retain information for security or legal reasons, or a chat may already have been de-identified and disassociated from the account. A deleted chat cannot be recovered through ChatGPT or Support.
The 30-day period is a deletion schedule, not a promise that every copy disappears at the same moment. It also does not mean that an account is automatically deleted after the owner dies. The consumer materials described here explain normal account controls, not a named executor or heir route for a deceased user.
Dictation audio follows the chat
For voice dictation, the service returns a transcription as editable text before it is sent as a message. Associated audio is retained for as long as the chat remains in chat history. Deleting that chat schedules the audio for deletion within 30 days, with the same types of security and legal exceptions. Audio previously shared for model training and disassociated from the account is treated differently from audio still linked to the user’s chat.

This distinction matters when planning an estate: deleting visible text history is the relevant action for associated dictation audio, but it is not a universal eraser for every data use that may already have been separated from the account.
Temporary chats are not “nothing is retained”
OpenAI’s temporary-chat controls keep a conversation out of normal history, but temporary chats may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. If a temporary chat is saved, it becomes ordinary history. Settings for model improvement, memory, temporary chats, and privacy requests address different processing purposes, so changing one does not automatically change the others.
Google Gemini
Keep Activity controls saved activity
Google’s Gemini privacy information says saved Gemini Apps Activity can include chats, files and other shared content, audio, Gemini Live video and screen shares, and product or location data. When Keep Activity is on, activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default. The account holder can instead select a three-month or 36-month period, or disable auto-delete.

Inactive Account Manager is an advance plan
Google’s Inactive Account Manager lets a living account holder choose what should happen after a selected period without activity. The user can designate up to 10 trusted contacts, choose all eligible data or only specific categories to share, and set the inactivity period. Google says it uses signals such as sign-ins, My Activity, Gmail use, and Android check-ins when determining whether an account is active.
This feature is controlled in advance by the account holder. It is not a family member’s automatic right to open the account, and it does not necessarily provide every item stored across Google services. Google also reserves the right to delete an account and its activity and data after at least two years of inactivity, so leaving an account untouched indefinitely is not a preservation strategy.
A deceased-account request is separate
For someone who has already died, Google says it may work with immediate family members and representatives to close the account and may provide content in certain circumstances after careful review. The outcome is discretionary rather than guaranteed. Google states: “We cannot provide passwords or other login details.” It also warns: “If you select to close the Google account, Google is unable to process any request to turn over the contents of the account at a later date.”

Those statements create two different routes. Inactive Account Manager is a user-designed sharing plan; a deceased-account request is a provider review. If preserving content matters, a family member should understand the review route before asking for closure.

Microsoft Copilot
Consumer conversation history
Microsoft’s consumer Copilot FAQ says conversation activity is stored for 18 months by default. Users can delete individual conversations or clear all conversation history. The same information covers personalization and model-training settings, which are separate from any post-death access question.
The consumer FAQ described here does not set out a deceased-user or executor procedure. Therefore, it does not establish that a relative can obtain a personal Copilot history, nor does it say that death automatically deletes it.
Work accounts use a different system
Microsoft 365 organizational guidance says that when a person leaves an organization and the account is deleted, Copilot and other AI-app messages subject to retention can be stored in an inactive mailbox. This is an employer-controlled compliance mechanism. It may preserve records for authorized administrators, legal discovery, or organizational policy; it does not make a family member an heir to a personal account or grant access to a deceased employee’s private data.

How to prepare while you can still manage the accounts
- Make an account inventory. List every AI service, the sign-in identity used, whether it is personal or employer-managed, and whether voice, files, memory, or live-session features are enabled.
- Decide what should happen to each category. For every service, record whether you want chats preserved, exported, shared with a named person, or deleted. Treat transcripts, original audio, uploads, and video separately.
- Review controls one service at a time. Check chat-history deletion, temporary-chat behavior, voice settings, memory or personalization, model-improvement choices, and auto-delete periods. For example, Gemini Keep Activity governs saved Activity, while OpenAI dictation audio is tied to the chat that contains its transcription.
- Configure an available inactivity plan. If you want Google data shared after inactivity, set up Inactive Account Manager, choose trusted contacts and eligible data, and select a period. Verify the contact’s address and explain that the feature is a planned notification or sharing mechanism, not a password handoff.
- Write instructions in a secure estate record. Identify the services, desired preservation or deletion outcome, where the relevant provider forms are found, and who should act. Store the record where the named person can lawfully find it, but do not put account passwords in an unsecured document.
- Review work-account rules. Employer-managed mailboxes and retention policies may override personal preferences. Ask the organization’s administrator or privacy contact how AI messages are handled when employment ends.
- Recheck after major policy changes. Provider feature names, default periods, and request procedures can change. Revisit the inventory whenever you enable a new voice feature, change an account, or update your estate plan.
If someone has already died
Do not start by deleting the account
First identify whether preservation, a limited export, or closure is the intended outcome. Google’s guidance specifically says that choosing account closure prevents a later request to turn over the account contents. A rushed closure can therefore remove an option that a representative might otherwise ask the provider to review.

Use the provider’s current request process
Gather proof of identity, proof of death, evidence of your relationship or authority, and the exact account identifier requested by the provider. Submit only through the provider’s current official process. A request may result in closure, selected content, or no disclosure after review; it is not a guaranteed handover of credentials or a complete archive.
Protect unrelated private information
Even when a provider can release something, the account may contain other people’s messages, confidential work files, financial details, or sensitive health information. Ask for the narrowest lawful scope that meets the stated purpose. Do not circulate a password or copy an entire account merely because it is technically possible to sign in.
Common assumptions that fail
- “Death automatically deletes everything.” The provider guidance described here does not establish that rule.
- “My family automatically inherits my chat history.” None of the consumer policies described here promises automatic inheritance or credential transfer.
- “A temporary chat leaves no record.” Temporary chats can be retained for safety, and a saved temporary chat becomes ordinary history.
- “Deleting text also erases every voice copy.” OpenAI ties dictation audio deletion to the chat, but lists exceptions, including audio previously disassociated for training.
- “An inactive work mailbox is the same as a personal inheritance feature.” Microsoft’s inactive-mailbox guidance concerns organizational retention and authorized administration.
- “Closing an account preserves evidence for later.” Google says closure prevents a later request to turn over the account contents.
Legal and policy limits
Heir and executor rights vary by jurisdiction, contract, account type, and the rights of other people whose data appears in a conversation. The provider policies above are operational guidance, not a universal statement of inheritance law. For a business account, regulated records, or a dispute among relatives, obtain advice specific to the relevant country and account owner.
