There is no automatic, industry-wide outcome when a cloud provider leaves the market. Your VMware virtual machines may continue running for a defined transition period, become read-only, or require an urgent export, depending on the provider’s customer agreement, exit notice, technical arrangements, backups, and your software entitlements. The same announcement can therefore produce very different results for two customers.
The safest assumption is that continuity is temporary until the provider confirms it in writing. Obtain the dated notice, service end date, export and recovery procedures, deletion schedule, support contacts, and any transition assistance promised in your contract. Then validate a destination, confirm license eligibility, test representative workloads, and keep a rollback and data-verification plan.
What actually happens to your VMs when a provider shuts down?
A market exit is both a service event and a contract event. The provider might sell the service, wind down a region, stop accepting new customers, or terminate the platform entirely. None of those phrases establishes a universal notice period or guaranteed export right.

- On what date does normal operation end, and is there a separate date for account or console access?
- Will virtual machines continue to run, be suspended, or become read-only during a transition?
- Can you export VM disks, snapshots, templates, configuration, logs, and backup data? In which formats?
- Are bandwidth, egress, conversion, professional-service, or storage-extension fees charged?
- How long will the provider retain data after termination, and when will deletion become irreversible?
- What support channels, escalation contacts, and migration assistance remain available?
Some providers can keep workloads online while customers move them; others may offer only a short retrieval window. A provider may also be unable to restore an application exactly as it ran if backups are incomplete or dependent on proprietary services. Treat every promise as specific to the written contract and the affected geography or service edition.
Can you move VMware workloads to another provider?
Usually there is more than one possible destination, but feasibility must be checked workload by workload. A second VMware-based environment can preserve more of the existing operating model. A different cloud or platform may lower long-term operational burden or enable modernization, but it generally introduces more change.

Broadcom describes a VCSP migration service and partner clouds as a path for moving to a VCF cloud. That is a service option, not a guarantee that every VM, network design, or license can be transferred unchanged.
Will your VMware licenses still work?
“License portability” is conditional, not an automatic right created by a provider’s closure. Broadcom’s June 4, 2024 explanation describes portability for qualifying customer-purchased VCF subscriptions deployed on compatible customer data-center, hosting, cloud-service-provider, or hyperscaler endpoints.

According to that published policy description, all of the following conditions matter:
- The new end-user VCF license is version 5.1 or later.
- It was purchased after December 13, 2023.
- The purchase was made directly from Broadcom or an authorized reseller.
- The destination hardware meets compatibility guidance.
- The integrated provider agrees to support portability.
The described entitlement does not cover VCF obtained through a cloud service provider, a value-added OEM, or an embedded software partner. A subscription that looks similar on an invoice can therefore have a different transfer position. Check the actual order, subscription identifier, version, acquisition channel, and current terms with the vendor and proposed destination provider. Do not assume that an entitlement for VCF also covers a replacement cloud’s operating-system, database, backup, or application licenses.
How much notice do you get, and can you get your data out?
There is no universal notice period established for all VMware hosting services. The answer may depend on termination language, insolvency or regulatory circumstances, local law, and whether the provider is closing a product, a region, or the entire business.

- Last date for normal writes and configuration changes.
- Last date that powered-on VMs remain available.
- Last date for API, console, VPN, and administrative access.
- Last date for exporting disks, snapshots, templates, and backups.
- Date on which the provider will delete primary data and then backup copies.
Ask for the export method and a working test account immediately. Clarify supported formats, maximum file sizes, concurrent-transfer limits, encryption-key handling, transfer destinations, integrity checks, and whether exports preserve UUIDs, MAC addresses, snapshots, tags, and network rules. If the provider offers only a proprietary backup, determine whether it can be restored without the provider’s control plane.
Get confirmation of egress charges, storage-extension pricing, and any requirement to keep the account paid while data is retrieved. Preserve tickets, notices, and written answers. If the provider cannot state a deletion date or recovery procedure, treat that uncertainty as a high-priority risk and involve legal counsel for the applicable jurisdiction.
What to do immediately after an announced exit
Use this sequence rather than starting with a mass copy of every VM. It puts contractual deadlines, license constraints, and business-critical dependencies first.

- Secure the notice and contract. Save the original announcement, customer-specific email, service order, acceptable-use terms, data-processing terms, and support contacts. Mark every date and ask which dates apply to your account, region, and service tier.
- Freeze avoidable change. Record the current inventory and configuration. Avoid upgrades, migrations, or cleanup that could make later validation or rollback harder. Continue essential patching and security response under a controlled change process.
- Inventory every workload. Capture VM name and identifier, CPU and memory, disk sizes, operating system, IP and DNS dependencies, identity integrations, certificates, firewall rules, load balancers, storage, backup jobs, replication, monitoring, scheduled tasks, external APIs, and performance requirements.
- Map application dependencies. Group VMs by application and document startup order, shared databases, message queues, file shares, licensing servers, time sources, and hard-coded addresses. Broadcom identifies application dependencies as a top challenge for both enterprise and small-to-medium businesses.
- Verify recoverability. Locate the latest usable backup for each application, restore a sample to an isolated network, and record recovery time and data-loss objectives. A snapshot that cannot be exported or restored independently is not a complete exit plan.
- Establish license ownership. For VCF, record version, purchase date, seller, subscription type, entitlement terms, and intended endpoint. Ask both the vendor and destination provider to confirm portability in writing before committing to a design.
- Shortlist destinations. Evaluate at least one compatible VMware destination and one materially different option when the business can tolerate platform change. Check capacity, geography, connectivity, security controls, support hours, compliance, recovery capabilities, and onboarding lead time.
- Build a costed transition plan. Include migration labor, temporary dual running, network transfer, destination storage and compute, new licenses, consulting, testing, application remediation, and contingency. Broadcom names cost assessment and technical feasibility as migration challenges.
- Run a pilot. Move representative low-, medium-, and high-dependency workloads first. Test boot, networking, identity, storage performance, monitoring, backups, failover, licensing, and application transactions. Measure the results against documented objectives.
- Schedule cutover and rollback. Define a change freeze, final synchronization, DNS and routing changes, user acceptance checks, rollback trigger, rollback duration, and who can authorize each decision.
- Verify and close out. Compare file counts, database consistency, checksums where appropriate, security settings, and monitoring alerts. Keep the old environment available through the agreed rollback window, then obtain written confirmation of account closure and data deletion.
How to compare migration paths in practice
Path A: another VMware-based environment
This path is attractive when the application is stable, the team relies on existing VMware tooling, and the transition deadline is short. It can reduce guest operating-system changes and preserve familiar operational procedures. It still requires validation of VCF and virtual hardware versions, network overlays, IP addressing, storage behavior, backup integration, identity, and provider-specific management features. Confirm that every required service is available in the destination geography and that the provider will honor any eligible portability entitlement.

Path B: a different virtualization platform
A different hypervisor may offer suitable infrastructure without preserving every VMware control-plane feature. Plan for image conversion, driver changes, boot-mode differences, network and storage remapping, backup redesign, and new operational skills. Test licensing checks and application support matrices before selecting this path.
Path C: managed or cloud-native services
Modernization can remove VM maintenance and make future provider changes less dependent on a single hypervisor. It also has the largest up-front scope: application decomposition, data migration, interface changes, security redesign, performance testing, and new service metering. Use it when the business case and timeline support engineering work, not as a last-minute export strategy.

Microsoft states that Azure VMware Solution (AVS) continues to operate; the change concerns license-included Reserved Instance SKUs. Those affected SKUs are scheduled to retire on 30 August 2027. Microsoft directs affected customers to transition to an AVS VCF bring-your-own-license (BYOL) SKU before 31 August 2027 to avoid service disruption.
Microsoft describes VCF BYOL as the least disruptive continuation path and also lists switching private clouds or modernizing to Azure-native services. Its wording is explicit: “AVS is not ending, only the SKU that includes the license is changing.” This is a licensing and SKU change with a published schedule, not evidence that the cloud provider is leaving the market. Recheck Microsoft’s live documentation before acting because dates, eligibility, and available options can change.

Costs, timing, and capacity decisions
The cheapest destination on a monthly invoice may be the most expensive transition. A realistic comparison includes:
- Discovery, dependency mapping, and project management.
- Destination compute, memory, storage, backup, and networking.
- Data-transfer and egress charges, plus temporary export storage.
- License replacement or portability validation.
- Application remediation, conversion, and testing.
- Parallel operation and contract overlap.
- Training, monitoring, security tooling, and recovery testing.
- Contingency for failed transfers or an extended provider deadline.
Capacity planning must account for peak CPU and memory, storage growth, IOPS, network throughput, and recovery copies rather than simply copying the old VM sizes. Reserve enough destination capacity to run production and a recovery environment during the transition. If the provider gives only a short window, prioritize identity, DNS, shared databases, revenue-generating applications, and systems required to restore everything else.
Common failure modes and how to prevent them
- Assuming a headline equals a termination date: obtain the account-specific schedule and distinguish a product change from a market exit.
- Discovering too late that backups are trapped: perform a test restore and export before the final week.
- Moving isolated VMs without their dependencies: map application startup order, network rules, identity, and external integrations.
- Treating license portability as automatic: verify version, purchase channel and date, endpoint compatibility, and provider participation.
- Underestimating transfer time: measure effective throughput with representative data and include retries, encryption, and validation.
- Cutting over without rollback: keep synchronized copies and define a named rollback authority and deadline.
- Ignoring deletion of secondary copies: obtain the provider’s retention and destruction confirmation for primary and backup data.
What evidence exists about provider outcomes?
There is no authoritative general statistic showing how often VMware workloads are lost, interrupted, or successfully migrated after a provider exits. An IDC brief published in September 2024, sponsored by VMware and based on four in-depth interviews with Broadcom VCSP partner organizations, reported partner-business figures—not customer exit outcomes—including $164.7 million in average annual VCF-related services revenue, $21.3 million in annual revenue growth for the average interviewed partner, and 50% of existing VCF customers buying additional services. Those figures should not be used to predict your migration probability or cost.
Likewise, the statement that application dependencies are a top challenge comes from a Broadcom provider article dated January 6, 2025; it is useful planning guidance, not an independently measured industry rate.
