NASA’s current plan is to operate the International Space Station (ISS) through 2030 and then guide it through a controlled reentry over an unpopulated ocean area. The station will not return intact: most hardware should burn up or vaporize in the atmosphere, while some dense, heat-resistant components may survive and fall within the planned maritime footprint. NASA has selected SpaceX to develop the U.S. Deorbit Vehicle (USDV), which NASA will own and operate for the final mission. In parallel, NASA is procuring commercial low-Earth-orbit destinations so research and crewed activity can continue after the ISS.

What is the current retirement date for the ISS?

The published target is continued operation through 2030. NASA’s August 5, 2026 International Space Station FAQ says the United States, Canada, Japan, the European Space Agency’s member nations and Russia currently plan to operate the station through that year.

That is a current planning commitment, not an irrevocable guarantee. Space programs depend on budgets, vehicle availability, safety assessments, international decisions and hardware health. NASA’s FY 2026 budget material also uses 2030 as the operating horizon and identifies a dedicated deorbit vehicle as essential to a safe transition. If a law or policy proposal changes the schedule, the change would need confirmation in an authoritative government record; news coverage of a proposal alone does not replace NASA’s published plan.

Will the ISS fall to Earth?

Eventually, yes, but “fall” can give the wrong impression. NASA does not plan to abandon the station and wait for a random atmospheric reentry. Operators intend to lower its orbit in stages, align the final ground track and then perform a targeted deorbit burn over an uninhabited ocean region.

The ISS already loses altitude slowly because of atmospheric drag. Even hundreds of kilometres above Earth, the atmosphere is thin enough to produce drag on a structure with the station’s large solar arrays and radiators. The station normally uses propulsion from its own systems and visiting spacecraft to raise its orbit and offset that drag. During retirement, operators will stop maintaining the normal altitude and use the remaining propulsion capability to make the descent deliberate and predictable.

How the controlled deorbit is expected to work

1. Continue operations while the transition is prepared

NASA and its partners are expected to keep operating the ISS while the deorbit hardware, procedures, tracking plans and successor facilities are developed. The final retirement sequence is not simply a date on a calendar; it requires a vehicle capable of moving the station’s mass, a verified target corridor and coordination among all participating agencies.

2. Return the final crew safely to Earth

NASA’s described sequence begins the final disposal phase after the crew has left the station safely. Removing people before the major orbit-lowering maneuvers eliminates the need to support a crew during the riskiest part of the operation and allows controllers to configure the complex for disposal.

3. Use natural drag and planned orbit-lowering burns

Natural atmospheric drag will do as much of the work as practical. Station propulsion systems and visiting spacecraft can add deliberate altitude-lowering maneuvers, reducing the orbit while controllers monitor the station’s position and attitude. These steps provide opportunities to refine the eventual reentry corridor rather than relying on one uncontrolled decay event.

4. Make smaller targeting adjustments

Once the crew has departed and the station is descending, operators can make smaller corrections to line up the ground track and debris footprint with the selected unpopulated ocean area. The objective is to have the station cross the atmosphere at a time and location that keep surviving material away from populated land.

5. Perform the final deorbit burn with the USDV

NASA selected SpaceX in June 2024 to develop and deliver the U.S. Deorbit Vehicle. NASA will own and operate the vehicle for its mission. The USDV is intended to provide the final, high-confidence push that directs the station into the planned reentry footprint. It is not a replacement station and is not intended to return the ISS to Earth intact.

6. Break up during atmospheric reentry

NASA expects the solar arrays and radiators to separate first as aerodynamic and thermal loads increase. Modules and truss sections should then break apart, followed by additional fragmentation. Most of the material is expected to burn up or vaporize, while some high-density or heat-resistant pieces may survive and splash down in the designated ocean area.

Where will the space station come down?

The target is an unpopulated region of ocean selected for a controlled reentry. NASA describes the primary safety objective as placing the reentering station structure in an unpopulated ocean area and avoiding risk to populated land. The exact corridor and timing will depend on final trajectory analysis, weather and orbital conditions near the disposal event.

It is therefore inaccurate to describe the plan simply as the ISS “crashing into the Pacific” or another ocean. The intended event is a managed reentry, with the final burn, tracking and footprint designed to limit risk. It is also inaccurate to promise that every part will burn up. Reentry modelling predicts that most material will be destroyed, but it cannot guarantee that no fragments survive or identify every fragment years in advance.

Will pieces of the ISS survive reentry?

Some may. The station combines lightweight pressurized modules, aluminium and other structural materials, tanks, machinery, solar-power equipment and dense components. Materials with high melting points or substantial mass can retain enough structure to reach the lower atmosphere or ocean even when surrounding hardware is destroyed.

The expected sequence is a broad breakup rather than one intact object reaching the surface. Solar arrays and radiators are likely to detach first, then modules and truss elements will fragment. Most pieces will ablate—lose mass through intense heating—or vaporize. A smaller quantity of dense, heat-resistant debris may reach the water inside the target area. NASA’s published description is an expectation based on reentry modelling, not a guarantee of a particular number, size or location of surviving fragments.

Why does NASA prefer controlled reentry?

NASA evaluated several retirement options: dismantling the station and returning it to Earth, boosting it to a higher orbit, allowing a natural uncontrolled decay, and directing a controlled ocean reentry. The controlled option best balances safety and engineering practicality.

The station was not designed to be taken apart in orbit

The ISS was assembled over 13 years using 27 space-shuttle flights and 161 spacewalks, according to NASA. Its modules, truss and utility connections were built for assembly and long-term operation in space, not for quick disassembly at the end of life. Taking the structure apart would require extensive crew or robotic work, new handling systems and a way to dispose of each major element safely.

A very high orbit would require much more propulsion

Putting the station into a long-lived orbit sounds safer because it would postpone reentry, but the propulsion requirement is much larger than for a controlled deorbit. NASA’s 2024 FAQ compares the approximate velocity changes, or delta-v, this way:

Option NASA figure What the figure means
Controlled deorbit 57 m/s Approximate delta-v for directing the station into a planned reentry.
Orbit lasting about 100 years 120–140 m/s Approximate delta-v to raise the station to an orbit intended to delay reentry for a century.
Orbit lasting more than 10,000 years 760 m/s Approximate delta-v for a much higher, very long-lived disposal orbit.

Delta-v is the change in velocity a spacecraft must achieve, not the station’s orbital speed. The comparison shows why a controlled descent is more practical than boosting the entire complex to a disposal orbit: the stated requirement is less than half of the 100-year option and far below the greater-than-10,000-year option.

Natural decay would leave the timing and footprint less controlled

If operators stopped correcting the orbit and simply waited, atmospheric drag would eventually bring the station down. However, the exact time and location of an uncontrolled reentry would be harder to predict, and the risk-management objective would be weaker. A final targeted burn gives controllers a defined disposal corridor instead of accepting a random future reentry over an uncertain part of the planet.

Why can’t NASA keep the station in orbit indefinitely?

Keeping the ISS at its operating altitude requires continuous maintenance. Drag must be countered, visiting vehicles must provide propulsion or other support, systems must be inspected and replaced, and crews need transportation, life-support supplies and emergency capability. The station is also an ageing, exceptionally complex structure assembled from many modules and interfaces.

Retirement is therefore not based on a single component suddenly failing. It is a managed decision about long-term safety, cost, logistics, partner commitments and the value of moving research to newer platforms. The published plan keeps the station active through 2030 while NASA and its partners prepare the next phase of low-Earth-orbit activity.

What replaces the ISS?

NASA’s strategy is to move from operating a government-sponsored station to purchasing services from commercially owned and operated low-Earth-orbit destinations. These facilities are intended to provide space for NASA research, technology development and human activity, while also serving other customers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NASA announced on October 9, 2026 that it had released a final request for proposals seeking industry plans for the next generation of commercial space stations. That announcement shows that procurement is continuing. It does not establish that a successor station is already operating, that one specific design has been selected under the reviewed announcement, or that a seamless handoff from the ISS is guaranteed.

What continuity could look like

  • NASA could reserve crew time, laboratory capacity and cargo services on commercial stations instead of owning every facility directly.
  • Different stations may serve different customers or research needs, rather than reproducing the ISS as one enormous international complex.
  • There may be a period in which the ISS is retired before every planned commercial destination is fully available. The current procurement record does not prove uninterrupted access.

What remains uncertain

  • The reviewed NASA material does not identify a completed replacement station that is already operating.
  • It does not establish the final schedule, capacity or pricing of future commercial destinations.
  • It does not guarantee that international partners will participate in exactly the same way after 2030.

How the ISS retirement compares with the alternatives

Approach Risk control Engineering practicality Effect on future activity
Controlled ocean reentry Targets an unpopulated ocean area and uses a final deorbit maneuver. NASA cites about 57 m/s of delta-v; the station can be lowered in stages. Allows NASA to plan a transition to commercial destinations.
Natural orbital decay Timing and footprint are less controllable, increasing uncertainty about where debris could fall. Requires less deliberate propulsion but sacrifices targeting control. Does not provide a coordinated retirement and replacement schedule.
Boost to a century-scale orbit Delays reentry but does not eliminate eventual disposal concerns. NASA cites about 120–140 m/s, substantially more than controlled deorbit. Consumes propulsion and leaves a large ageing structure in orbit.
Boost to an orbit lasting more than 10,000 years Would greatly delay natural reentry. NASA cites about 760 m/s, a much larger requirement than deorbit. Not the published retirement approach.
Disassemble and return components Could separate hardware, but each item would need its own safe disposal plan. The modules and truss were not designed for easy disassembly in orbit. Would require extensive additional crew, robotics and logistics work.

What the retirement plan means for safety on Earth

The safety case has two parts. First, the trajectory is designed to keep the main debris footprint over an unpopulated ocean region. Second, the vehicle and tracking sequence are intended to make the final reentry predictable enough for controllers to select that footprint. The plan does not imply zero risk: large spacecraft can fragment in complex ways, atmospheric conditions change, and some material may survive. It does mean that avoiding populated land is the primary design objective rather than an accidental benefit.

People should not expect to recover identifiable sections across a wide area or to see a single intact “space station” strike the ocean. The physical event will be a high-energy atmospheric breakup followed by a dispersed splashdown of any surviving debris within the planned area.

What is known about the cost?

The published material used for this plan provides delta-v comparisons, assembly history and the role of the USDV, but it does not establish one total retirement or deorbit cost. A contract value, development amount or budget line should not be presented as the complete cost unless its scope explicitly includes all station retirement operations, launch, tracking, crew return and disposal activities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to watch as 2030 approaches

  • NASA and its partners may update the operating horizon or disposal sequence as hardware condition, budgets and policy decisions evolve.
  • NASA will need to complete development, launch and certification work for the USDV before the final mission.
  • Commercial-station proposals will need to progress from procurement into construction, launch and crewed operations.
  • NASA will publish more precise trajectory and operational details closer to the disposal event, when vehicle readiness and orbital conditions are known.

The durable answer is therefore straightforward: the ISS is planned to remain in service through 2030, then be deliberately deorbited—not abandoned to a random fall or returned intact—while NASA works to shift low-Earth-orbit research and human activity to commercial stations.
