Steam Next Fest ending does not automatically remove every participating demo. The developer decides whether to keep a demo available or deactivate it, and Steam recommends announcing any shutdown date. Save-file carryover is a separate decision: a demo can share Steam Cloud storage with the full game only when the developer configures the two app IDs for that purpose.
Next Fest ending is not an automatic demo shutdown
When a Steam Next Fest event concludes, there is no platform-wide rule that immediately takes every demo offline. Valve’s Steamworks FAQ says the developer chooses the post-event duration and encourages teams to leave demos available beyond the event when that fits their release plan. The official guidance is published in the Steam Next Fest documentation (accessed October 13, 2026).
That means two games that appeared in the same festival can have different outcomes. One developer may leave its demo downloadable for weeks or months; another may deactivate it shortly after the event. The end of the festival is therefore a change in the event schedule, not a guaranteed end date for the individual demo.
Steam’s advice to developers
“While it’s up to you to decide what works best for your release strategy, we encourage you to consider leaving your demo up beyond the conclusion of the Steam Next Fest you joined. Many players have expressed disappointment when demos disappear immediately, so communicate to players if you plan to deactivate your demo so they can prioritize playing it accordingly.”

This is guidance from Steam’s Next Fest FAQ, not a promise that a particular demo will remain available. A developer’s own announcement is the most useful indication of its plan.
How to find out whether a particular demo will remain playable
Use the demo’s own communications rather than assuming every Next Fest title follows the same schedule.
- Read the demo’s home screen. Steamworks tips advise developers to state on the demo home screen whether and when they plan to deactivate it. Look for a date, a “last chance” message, or a note that the demo will remain available after the event.
- Check the game’s Steam announcements. A developer can publish a shutdown notice, an extension, or a statement that no deactivation is currently planned. Steam specifically recommends communicating a planned deactivation because players may have downloaded the demo intending to play later.
- Check the developer’s official channels. If the Steam page has no clear notice, the developer’s own announcement channels may provide the date or explain a change in plans. Treat a dated statement as more reliable than community speculation.
- Try the demo from your Library while it is still listed. A festival ending by itself is not evidence that the entry has vanished. Availability can change later when the developer uses Steam’s demo controls.
If there is no announced shutdown date, the only defensible conclusion is that the developer has not publicly specified one. It is not a guarantee of permanent availability.

Steamworks documentation describes a control that lets a developer deactivate or reactivate a demo. Deactivation is an action on that app, separate from the festival calendar. Details of the demo’s technical build affect what happens next.

Steam cautions that disabling a demo does not necessarily prevent every local launch. A demo may still launch outside Steam unless it requires Steam and checks for a current license. In practical terms, a deactivated app can behave differently depending on how its developer implemented Steam integration and licensing checks. Do not interpret a local launch as proof that the demo remains officially available, and do not interpret a Steam-side block as proof that every copy on every computer will stop immediately.
The official setup and deactivation behavior is documented in Steamworks’ Demos documentation (accessed October 13, 2026). That page explains the developer controls; it does not promise continued access for players after a deactivation.

Do demo saves carry into the full game?
Sometimes, but not automatically. Demo availability and save continuity are separate decisions. A demo can stay online and still use an isolated save, or it can be deactivated after the event while a properly configured save remains usable by the full game.

Cloud synchronization also depends on the game’s configured Cloud files and the player’s Steam Cloud settings. If either title does not have the appropriate Cloud setup, the full game may not see the demo’s save even when both products belong to the same franchise. Steam’s official explanation is in Steam Cloud documentation (accessed October 13, 2026).
The conditions a successful handoff requires
- Developer configuration: The demo and full game must be set up to share Cloud storage through the relevant app IDs.
- Compatible save handling: The full game must be able to recognize and use the data written by the demo. Shared storage alone does not describe how a game interprets every file.
- Cloud files configured for the app: Steam Cloud synchronizes the files the developer has declared, rather than every file a game might create.
- Cloud enabled for the player: Steamworks notes that synchronization relies on the user’s Steam Cloud settings.
Because these conditions are title-specific, the absence of a transferred save is not evidence that Steam deleted it. It may mean the developer did not enable shared storage, the demo and full game use different save formats, the relevant file is not part of the configured Cloud set, or Cloud synchronization is disabled in the player’s settings. Only the developer can confirm which design applies to its game.
Demo access and save continuity are independent
Players often treat the festival deadline and the full-game release as one event, but Steam’s systems treat them separately. The following combinations are all possible:

The table describes the decisions documented by Steamworks; it does not predict an individual title’s implementation. Look for the developer’s save-transfer instructions if the game publishes them.

What to do if you want to preserve your progress
Before a stated shutdown date
- Read the demo home screen and the latest Steam announcement for the exact deactivation timing.
- Check whether the developer says progress carries into the full game. A general statement that the demo uses Steam Cloud is not the same as confirmation of demo-to-full-game sharing.
- Keep Steam Cloud enabled if you want the configured Cloud files to synchronize. Steamworks identifies the player’s Cloud setting as part of the synchronization path.
- Finish any demo section you care about before the announced deadline. The deadline is the developer’s plan, not a platform-wide promise that access will remain until the full game launches.
If the demo has already disappeared
First determine whether the developer actually deactivated it or whether you are seeing a temporary listing or launch problem. Check the game’s Steam announcements and official channels. If the developer confirms deactivation, Steam’s documentation says launch behavior can depend on the app’s licensing checks, so there is no single result that applies to every demo.
For the save, wait for the full game to use its configured Cloud data rather than assuming a local demo file will be imported. If progress does not appear, ask the developer whether the demo and full game share a Cloud app ID and which save files are included. Steam provides the storage mechanism; the title’s developer controls the configuration and compatibility.

Steam gives developers discretion because a demo can serve different release strategies. A team may want ongoing discovery, may need to replace a festival build, or may decide that a limited-time preview no longer represents the product. Steam’s Next Fest guidance acknowledges those choices while asking developers to account for players who downloaded the demo for later.
That discretion also explains why community reports can conflict. One game can remain downloadable after the event while another is disabled on the same day. Neither outcome changes the rules for the other title, and neither tells you whether saves will transfer.

The post-event wrap-up is not a shutdown notice
Steam says a wrap-up event page featuring games with the most-played demos launches shortly after Next Fest concludes. This recap is a separate promotional page. Its appearance does not determine whether an individual demo remains live, and a demo’s continued availability does not depend on being included in the wrap-up.
Use the demo’s own Steam page and the developer’s announcements for access information. Treat the wrap-up as a summary of the event, not as a catalog of demos that are still playable.
Developer checklist for clear player expectations
Although players cannot change a demo’s configuration, understanding the developer’s obligations helps explain what information should be available:

- State on the demo home screen whether the demo will be deactivated and, if so, when.
- Publish an announcement before deactivation so players can prioritize playing it.
- Decide whether to leave the demo live beyond Next Fest instead of relying on the event end as an implied deadline.
- Configure the Shared cloud APP ID when demo-to-full-game save sharing is intended.
- Declare the Cloud files that should synchronize and ensure the full game can read the resulting save data.
- Explain any title-specific limitations, such as a save that does not carry over despite both products using Steam Cloud.
These steps are consistent with Steam’s Next Fest, Demos, and Steam Cloud documentation. They are recommendations and configuration requirements, not guarantees that every developer will implement them.
Bottom line for players
Next Fest’s conclusion does not automatically delete or disable participating demos. The developer controls how long each demo remains available and should announce a planned deactivation. If access matters, check the demo home screen and official announcements rather than waiting for the festival page to change.
Progress transfer is a different question. Steam Cloud can share storage between a demo app ID and a full-game app ID, but only when the developer configures it and the game’s Cloud files, save format, and player settings support the handoff. A live demo does not guarantee a transferable save, and a deactivated demo does not by itself prove that a configured Cloud save is gone.
