Steam Next Fest demos do not all disappear when the festival ends. Valve leaves availability to each developer and encourages studios to keep demos live, but a developer can deactivate a demo after the event. Deactivation blocks new downloads and Steam launching, even for people who already installed the demo; the title can remain visible in their libraries and may be reactivated later.
Because there is no automatic festival-wide expiry, the only safe assumption is that a demo is temporary unless its developer clearly says otherwise.
Valve does not impose a universal takedown
Steam Next Fest is an event window, not a license that automatically expires at a fixed hour for every participating demo. Valve’s Steamworks documentation puts the decision in the developer’s hands. Its guidance says: While it’s up to you to decide what works best for your release strategy, we encourage you to consider leaving your demo up beyond the conclusion of the Steam Next Fest you joined. Many players have expressed disappointment when demos disappear immediately, so communicate to players if you plan to deactivate your demo so they can prioritize playing it accordingly.

That policy creates two legitimate outcomes. A studio may leave the event build available so new players can download and play it after Next Fest. Another studio may deactivate its demo when the event build is no longer the version it wants publicly accessible. Both outcomes comply with Steam’s documented controls.

No authoritative percentage shows how many Next Fest demos remain available. Availability varies by game and developer, so a festival-wide assumption such as “all demos stay up for a week” or “all demos vanish immediately” is incorrect.
The two post-event states players will encounter

The meaningful distinction is not whether a demo was downloaded during the festival. It is whether the developer leaves the demo active. Installation alone does not create a permanent right to run it through Steam.
What happens to a demo you downloaded?
It can stay visible in your library
When a developer deactivates a demo, Steam does not necessarily erase the library entry. Steamworks states that players who already have the demo in their libraries continue to see it, which allows them to uninstall it if they want to reclaim disk space.
Steam can block launching after installation
The same Steamworks guidance says deactivation prevents players from downloading or launching the demo. Therefore, an installed copy can become unusable through the Steam client after the developer changes the demo’s status. Seeing the icon in your library is not evidence that the game remains playable.

New downloads stop
Once deactivated, a demo is no longer available for a first-time download from Steam. This affects people who skipped the festival as well as people who removed a previously installed copy. Reinstalling is not a workaround because Steam will not provide the deactivated demo as a new download.
Reactivation is possible
Deactivation is reversible. Steamworks gives the developer a control to reactivate the demo, restoring normal Steam access. Reactivation depends entirely on the studio choosing to do it; Steam does not automatically restore every deactivated event demo.
Can you still play after Next Fest?
Yes, if the developer leaves the demo active. Players can continue to launch it after the event just as they did during the event. The event’s end date alone does not disable an active demo.
If the developer deactivates it, the normal answer is no: Steam blocks both new downloads and launching by existing owners. This applies even when the files are still present on your drive and the library entry remains visible.

For a time-sensitive demo, check the developer’s announcement, the demo’s store page, or the game’s community communications for a stated takedown date. A clear date is useful evidence of the developer’s plan, but an absence of a date should not be interpreted as a promise that the demo is permanent.
What players should do before the event ends
- Play the demo rather than merely claiming it. Valve specifically notes that players have been disappointed when demos disappear immediately after Next Fest. If you care about a particular title, start it during the festival or soon afterward instead of assuming you can return months later.
- Wishlist the full game. Steam’s demo documentation describes a link from the demo to the full game’s store page, including a prominent library link. Use that link to add the full release to your wishlist while the demo page is easy to find. A wishlist entry does not keep the demo playable, but it helps you track the eventual game.
- Read the developer’s notices. Look for a post, news update, or demo-page message that says whether the build will remain available and, if applicable, when deactivation is planned. Developers are encouraged to communicate a takedown so players can prioritize their play time.
- Do not treat installation as an archive. Downloading the files before the event ends does not guarantee that Steam will allow a future launch. If the demo matters, finish the session you want while the status is active.
Why a developer might change the demo’s status
Next Fest builds are often event-specific snapshots. A developer may leave that build public after the festival, or may decide that it no longer represents the version it wants players to see. Steam’s controls support either release strategy.
Deactivation is different from deleting a game from a player’s library. It changes the demo’s ability to be downloaded and launched through Steam while preserving the library record for existing owners. Because the action is reversible, a studio can later restore access if its release plans change.

Deactivation is separate from removing the store-page button
Steamworks treats the demo’s availability and the demo button on the full game’s store page as separate controls. A developer can remove the button that points visitors from the full game’s page to the demo without deactivating the demo itself. Conversely, deactivating the demo blocks downloads and launches even if a link or library entry still appears.

This distinction explains why a missing demo button is not conclusive proof that the demo has been disabled. Check the demo’s own Steam status or the developer’s notice rather than relying on the presence of a shortcut on the full game’s page.
A technical edge case outside normal Steam behavior
Steam warns that a disabled demo may still launch outside Steam if it does not require Steam and does not check for a current license. This is an exception to the normal client behavior, not a dependable method for bypassing deactivation.
Most players should expect Steam’s rules to apply: a deactivated demo cannot be launched through the client. Whether an independently started executable works depends on how that particular demo was built, including whether it performs Steam or license checks. The documentation does not promise that an offline or direct launch will work, so do not rely on this possibility when deciding whether to play a demo before a takedown.

Shortly after each Next Fest, Steam launches a Wrap-up page featuring games with the most-played demos from that edition. The recap is a look back at player activity, not a guarantee that every featured demo remains downloadable or playable.

A game can appear in the recap even if its developer later deactivates the demo. Conversely, a demo that remains active does not need to be featured in the recap to stay available. Treat the Wrap-up as a discovery and statistics page, not as an availability directory.
A practical decision guide
If you have not downloaded the demo
- Play it during Next Fest or immediately afterward if possible.
- Check the developer’s communication for a planned deactivation date.
- Wishlist the full game from the demo’s link to its store page.
If you downloaded it but have not played it
- Launch it before the developer’s stated deadline, if one exists.
- Do not assume the installed files will remain launchable after deactivation.
- Keep the library entry only as a record; it does not override Steam’s launch restriction.
If Steam suddenly refuses to launch it
- Check whether the developer announced that the demo was deactivated.
- Confirm whether the demo is still offered as a new download on Steam. A blocked download is a strong sign that the status changed.
- Look for a later reactivation announcement. Only the developer can restore normal Steam access.
- If the files remain on your computer, do not assume a direct executable will work; that depends on whether the build requires Steam and performs a current-license check.
Answers to common misconceptions
“I own the demo, so I can play it forever.”
A demo is not permanently playable merely because it was added to your library. Deactivation can leave the entry visible while blocking launches.
“Every Next Fest demo expires when the countdown reaches zero.”
There is no automatic, universal expiry. The developer chooses whether to leave the demo active or deactivate it.
“Removing the demo button means the demo is gone.”
The button on the full game’s store page is a separate setting. Its removal does not itself disable the demo.
“If a demo is disabled, Steam will delete it from my library.”
Steamworks says existing owners continue to see the demo in their libraries, although they cannot launch it through Steam while it is deactivated.
Bottom line for players
Steam Next Fest demos have no single post-event fate. An active demo remains downloadable and playable; a deactivated demo is blocked from new downloads and Steam launches, may still be visible in existing libraries, and can be brought back by its developer. Play demos you care about before the event window closes, wishlist the full games, and follow developer announcements instead of assuming that a download guarantees permanent access.
