Nothing changes for Roku owners while Fox’s announced acquisition is pending: Roku and Fox remain separate, existing devices and apps should continue working, and Roku is still releasing software updates. Closing is expected in the first half of 2027, subject to approvals and other customary conditions. Roku has not announced a post-close privacy policy, data-sharing change, or requirement to replace your device.

Where the acquisition stands

Fox and Roku have announced a transaction, but it has not closed as of October 18, 2026. The companies say they expect closing in the first half of calendar year 2027, subject to customary closing conditions and required approvals. Until that happens, Roku continues to operate as a separate company and its existing customer terms remain in force.

Item Current status What it means for you
Transaction Announced, not closed Roku and Fox remain separate for now.
Expected closing First half of 2027 This is a target window, not a guaranteed date.
Regulatory and closing conditions Still pending The timetable or final structure could change.
Roku brand after closing Roku says it will continue The SEC-filed communication says the business will operate under the Roku brand.

Fox’s filing describes integration and regulatory uncertainty, so statements about the post-close organization are plans rather than a detailed implementation schedule. No final closing date or regulator outcome has been published.

Will your existing Roku device keep working?

During the pending transaction

Yes. Roku tells customers that “The experience you know and love isn’t changing.” Its announcement says customers will continue to have the top apps, free entertainment, the existing fast interface and access to a broad range of television. That means a Roku player, Roku TV or other supported Roku product should continue to launch, stream and receive the same service during the transaction period.

After closing

Roku has not published a device-by-device post-close plan. The company has said it will remain under the Roku brand and continue as an open, partner-friendly platform supporting the streaming ecosystem. Those commitments support continuity, but they do not guarantee a particular model’s update lifespan or rule out future product changes.

Do you need to buy a new Roku?

No new device is required because of the announcement. Keep using your current hardware unless it has a separate problem, such as failing storage, an unsupported video format, damaged ports or a remote that no longer works. A replacement remote is an accessory decision, not an acquisition requirement.

Roku updates are still being released

Roku’s support history shows active software maintenance during the pending deal. Roku OS 15.3 is listed as released on August 6, 2026. Earlier entries include fixes for publicly identified vulnerabilities (CVEs). Roku says its automatic software updates are designed to deliver the latest security and privacy features to customers’ products.

Update fact Evidence and qualification
Latest release listed Roku OS 15.3, released August 6, 2026.
Delivery method Automatic updates are Roku’s normal method; a manual check is also available.
Security work The published history includes earlier CVE fixes.
Long-term legacy support Not guaranteed for every older model after the transaction closes.

How to check for an update

  1. From the Roku home screen, open Settings.
  2. Choose the Software update control (on some models it appears under System).
  3. Select Check now and allow the device to restart if an update is found.
  4. If the check reports that the software is current, leave automatic updates enabled so later security releases can install.

Menu wording can vary by Roku player, television model and software version. A failed check is usually a connectivity or storage issue rather than evidence that the acquisition has changed support. Confirm that the device is online, restart it, and run the check again. If an older model cannot install a current release, consult Roku’s model-specific support information; the transaction announcement does not promise that every legacy device will receive updates indefinitely.

What Roku’s current privacy policy covers

The privacy policy last updated July 1, 2026 is the published policy while the acquisition is pending. It covers Roku Services broadly: Roku websites, Roku players, Roku TV models, Smart Home devices, mobile applications, The Roku Channel, Roku Sports Channel and Roku advertising services.

Information category Examples described by Roku Stated purposes
Account and transaction data Registration details and payment information. Providing accounts, purchases and requested services.
Device data Device identifiers and related technical information. Operating, securing and improving products.
Viewing and usage data Viewing activity, interactions and use of Roku features. Service operation, analytics and improvement.
Advertising interactions Information about interactions with advertisements. Advertising measurement and personalized or targeted advertising.

Roku says it uses information to improve its services and to show personalized or targeted advertising. The policy also explains that third-party channel providers and their advertising partners may collect information separately. Installing or using a channel therefore creates a second privacy relationship: Roku’s policy governs Roku Services, while the channel provider’s policy governs its own collection and advertising practices.

Does Fox now receive your Roku viewing data?

There is no announced post-close privacy change. The acquisition communications discuss continuity, investment and integration, but they do not publish a revised privacy policy or promise that Fox will receive Roku viewing histories. The July 1, 2026 Roku policy remains the applicable published policy as of October 18, 2026.

That does not establish what data practices will look like after closing. A future owner could issue new terms, revise advertising language or describe additional sharing, but none of those changes has been announced. Treat any claim that Fox is already receiving Roku account or viewing data because of the pending deal as unsubstantiated unless Roku, Fox or an applicable notice says so.

What to watch for

  • A newly dated Roku privacy policy or privacy-notice update.
  • An email or on-device notice describing changed data uses, advertising or choices.
  • Updated channel-provider policies, which can change independently of Roku’s policy.
  • Changes to account, advertising or viewing-data controls in Roku settings.

Read the effective date and scope of any notice. A change applying only to a new service or a particular region is not automatically a change to every Roku product.

Will Fox put its services on the Roku home screen?

No placement has been announced. Readers have asked whether Fox News, Tubi or FOX One will be forced onto the home screen, but the transaction materials do not specify channel promotion, default tiles or search-ranking changes. Roku’s statement that it will remain open and partner-friendly is a platform commitment, not a published home-screen layout.

Roku’s SEC-filed communication says the company will continue under the Roku brand and remain “an open, partner-friendly platform, supporting the entire streaming ecosystem.” That wording suggests the platform is intended to keep serving multiple content partners, but it does not prohibit future promotions or identify which services might receive them. Wait for an official product announcement before treating any home-screen change as definite.

Should you buy a Roku now or wait?

The acquisition alone is not a reason to postpone a purchase. A current buyer can evaluate a Roku device on its present software, app support, accessibility features, television compatibility and return policy. The transaction may matter if you are making a long-term purchase and want certainty about future support, but no source provides a guaranteed post-close support schedule.

Your situation Practical choice Why
You need streaming now Buy a current compatible model. Roku says the current experience and apps are unchanged while the deal proceeds.
Your existing Roku works well Keep it and install updates. No replacement is required because of the announcement.
You depend on a very old model Check its current software support before buying accessories or relying on it for years. Long-term legacy support after closing is not guaranteed.
You are highly sensitive to advertising or data use Read Roku’s July 1, 2026 policy and each channel provider’s policy. Roku and third-party channels can have separate data practices.
You can wait without inconvenience Wait for definitive closing and policy notices. Post-close integration details remain uncertain.

Check the exact model and regional compatibility before ordering. Inventory, prices and post-close availability were not specified in the transaction materials, so those details must be verified at the time of purchase.

Owner checklist for the transition

  1. Keep automatic updates on. This allows security and privacy releases to install without relying on manual checks.
  2. Record your model number and Roku OS version. You will need both when checking support information or troubleshooting an update.
  3. Run a manual software check after a failed or interrupted update. Use the Settings software-update control, then restart the device if prompted.
  4. Review the current privacy policy. Pay attention to viewing, usage and advertising sections, not just account information.
  5. Review channel policies separately. Third-party providers and their advertising partners may collect data under their own terms.
  6. Treat acquisition rumors as provisional. Look for a dated Roku, Fox or regulatory notice before changing hardware or privacy decisions.

What remains unknown after closing

Several important questions cannot yet be answered from the published announcements: the exact closing date, regulatory outcome, post-close organizational structure, wording of any future advertising policy, treatment of individual legacy models and whether Fox-owned services receive particular home-screen placement. Those are implementation decisions, not facts established by the announcement.

The clearest present-day conclusion is narrower and more useful: your Roku should continue working during the pending transaction, updates are still arriving, and the July 1, 2026 privacy policy remains the published policy. Reassess only when a new policy, product notice or support statement supplies concrete terms.
