A streaming-service merger does not automatically move your profile, watchlist, or downloads. Each provider decides what changes, and the answer can differ by country, plan, profile type, and app. Some services offer an optional profile link or copy; others keep related services separate. Offline downloads are especially uncertain because their rights are tied to an app and subscription. Follow the service’s official notice for your account, and keep access to the old app and profile until you have checked what actually carried over.
A merger does not guarantee that your account data will move
A corporate deal and a change to the streaming service you use are different events. A proposed acquisition may not have closed, and even a completed deal does not by itself establish how customer accounts, profiles, or apps will work. Providers may keep two services running, integrate some content or features, or introduce a voluntary transfer. Treat the provider’s operational notice for your country and plan—not headlines about a corporate transaction—as the guide to what subscribers need to do.
Even when a provider offers a transfer, “your profile” is not necessarily one indivisible package. A service may handle viewing history, recommendations, watchlists, settings, parental controls, and downloads under separate rules. A transfer may also be limited to particular account types or profiles. Before acting, look for an explanation of whether the process is automatic or requires you to link accounts, what data is included, and whether the operation copies or removes the original.

What may happen to each part of your account
Profiles and viewing history
A provider may offer a profile link or account-to-account transfer, but that is a product feature—not a standard consequence of a merger. Check whether adult and kids’ profiles are treated differently, whether the source subscription must remain active, and whether the destination account has room. Confirm which history is included: a page may promise viewing history without specifying every item that appears in the destination app.

Recommendations also may not work exactly as they did before. They are personalized using account data and the destination service’s own catalog and systems. A transfer can preserve recommendation data where a provider says it does, but it cannot make an unavailable title appear in the new service or guarantee identical recommendations.
Watchlists and saved titles
Watchlists can migrate separately from profile information. A saved title may be missing because it is not offered in the destination service, because the transfer does not include that list, or because the destination imposes a capacity limit. Similar list names—such as “My List,” “My Stuff,” or “Watchlist”—do not mean the underlying lists sync in both directions.
After linking or transferring, compare the destination list with the source rather than assuming a complete match. Pay particular attention to titles you planned to watch soon. If a provider describes the feature as one-way, changes you make in the destination app may not update the old app.

Offline downloads
Downloads are the least safe item to assume will transfer. They are app-specific files or app-managed offline access, subject to a service’s subscription, device, title, and expiration rules. The official bundle guidance discussed below says download rules vary across apps, but does not say whether existing downloads survive a merger or profile transfer. The available service guidance therefore does not establish either that downloads automatically migrate or that they are always deleted.
If you have an upcoming trip or need episodes offline, check the current notice for your exact service and title. If the provider has not explained download behavior, download essential content in the app you expect to use before the change, then verify offline playback in the destination app. This is a precaution, not a guarantee: content availability, subscription rights, and download expiration can still affect playback.
How documented streaming-service changes differ
These examples show why there is no universal migration rule. The Hulu and HBO Max examples below describe US guidance; Netflix’s profile-transfer announcement describes its own Netflix-to-Netflix feature. Eligibility and product guidance can change, so check the provider’s current help information before taking action.

Hulu and Disney+: linking is specific and one-way
Hulu’s US Help Center guidance dated May 19, 2026 says Hulu and Hulu Premium subscriptions would continue to be available while Hulu was further integrated within Disney+. The profile-linking instructions describe a one-way link for eligible profiles, not an automatic account-wide migration. The cited guidance excludes Live TV plans, the Disney+, Hulu, Max Bundle, Hulu Add-ons, and Kids or under-18 profiles. Since eligibility can change, confirm the current rules for your plan before expecting the link option to appear.

The distinction matters if you subscribe to a bundle. Hulu says existing My Stuff and history do not carry over for bundled or standalone Disney+ access unless a profile is linked. Having access to both apps is not the same as having linked profiles, and a title saved or watched in one app does not necessarily update the other.
HBO Max: a transfer can be a copy, not a move
The HBO Max US Help Center describes a user-initiated transfer of an adult profile to a new or existing HBO Max account. Because the source profile remains, the operation is a copy rather than a removal. That detail can matter if you plan to cancel the source account: first make sure the destination has the profile and information you expect, and understand what happens to billing and access on the source account separately.

Netflix and a proposed acquisition: do not confuse transaction notices with migration rules
Netflix’s October 17, 2022 company post described Profile Transfer as a way for someone using an account to take their profile data—recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and settings—when starting a separate Netflix membership. Netflix updated the post in July 2023 to include transfer to an existing account. This feature preserves data within Netflix; it is not evidence that Netflix can import another service’s profiles.
Separately, an SEC-filed Form 425 FAQ about Netflix’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery said, at the time of that filing, that the services would remain separate pending transaction closing, memberships were not changing then, and Netflix profiles, recommendations, and watch history were unchanged. Those statements described the situation at the filing date; they should not be treated as a promise about later integration plans.
Discovery+ and Max: related does not necessarily mean combined
Discovery+ Help Center guidance said the Discovery+ subscription was unaffected by Max’s launch and would continue as a standalone service. A service’s catalog, brand, or corporate ownership can change without a subscriber’s account being automatically transferred. Check the notice for the subscription itself rather than inferring account changes from the presence of related content elsewhere.

How to prepare before linking, transferring, or switching apps
- Find the notice for your account. Use the service’s official help center or account page and check that the information applies to your country, subscription plan, and the announced effective date. A corporate announcement alone may describe a proposed transaction rather than a live account change.
- Check whether you must act. Look for a clear statement that migration is automatic or for an explicit link or transfer procedure. Do not assume that installing a second app or having a bundle completes a profile link.
- Confirm eligibility. Check the rules for plan type, adult versus kids’ profiles, region, active subscriptions, and destination-account capacity. For example, the Hulu linking guidance cited above excludes certain plans and under-18 profiles, while HBO Max’s described transfer excludes kids’ profiles and requires both accounts to be in the same country or region.
- Make an inventory of what matters. Note the account email and plan, profile name and avatar, PIN or parental-control settings, important watch-history items, and titles in My List, My Stuff, or Watchlist. You do not need to preserve every item, but a short record gives you a reference when checking the destination.
- Read the transfer description field by field. See whether it names history, recommendations, settings, PIN, watchlist, or other data. Verify whether the process creates a copy or moves the original, whether it is reversible, and whether later activity syncs between apps.
- Check the destination after the action. Open the destination profile and inspect its settings, history, and saved titles. Search for important titles directly if they are missing; the destination catalog may not include everything in the source list, and a list-size cap can also affect what appears.
- Handle downloads separately. Review the notice for supported devices, plan requirements, title availability, expiration, and whether downloads must be recreated. If the notice does not address existing downloads, do not assume they move. For travel, download essential episodes before the change and test playback in the app you will use.
- Keep the old account available until you verify the change. Do not cancel a subscription, unlink accounts, or delete a profile just because a transfer button completed. First confirm that you can sign in, play the content you need, and see the profile data that the provider said would transfer. Confirm billing and any source-account changes independently.
What to compare in an official migration notice
When a provider announces a change, use these questions to distinguish an actual migration from a branding or catalog update:
- Trigger: Is migration automatic, or must you link or transfer profiles yourself?
- Operation: Is it a one-way sync, a copy, a move, or no transfer at all?
- Data: Which profile fields are included—history, recommendations, watchlist, settings, avatar, or PIN?
- Eligibility: Which plans, profile ages, regions, and account states qualify?
- Destination behavior: Are titles unavailable in the new catalog omitted, and is there a watchlist or profile-capacity limit?
- Offline access: What happens to existing downloads, expiration dates, and the ability to download the same titles again?
- Timing and recovery: When does the change take effect, how long will the source app remain accessible, and what can you do if data is missing?
For bundles, remember that multiple subscriptions do not necessarily mean one app or one set of download rules. Hulu’s US bundle guidance says Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max subscribers need to download each app separately and that features and usage rules vary, including temporary downloads. It does not explain whether offline files, offline rights, or expiration clocks move between apps. Ask the relevant service about the specific title and device if offline playback is essential.
