Automating a Claude task does not create one universal privacy outcome. The handling of a prompt depends on whether the automation calls the Anthropic API, runs in a Claude commercial or Enterprise account, or uses a consumer account. It also depends on the feature: ordinary text prompts, uploaded files, explicit prompt caching, and Computer Use screenshots can follow different rules.
Anthropic says commercial API inputs and outputs are normally deleted from its backend within 30 days and are not used to train models by default. Those statements have exceptions, and they do not describe what an automation runner, connector, website, browser extension, or final destination stores. To assess risk, trace the complete path from the original prompt to every system that receives it.
Start by identifying which Claude product your automation uses
The first privacy mistake is applying an API rule to a saved chat, or a consumer-account rule to an organization account. Anthropic publishes separate retention and training explanations for each surface.

What happens to prompts sent through the standard API?
Under Anthropic’s stated standard API practice, the prompt you submit and the generated output are deleted from backend systems within 30 days of receipt or generation. “Within 30 days” is a backend-retention statement, not a promise that no copy exists elsewhere in your workflow. Your code may log request bodies, an observability service may capture them, and a destination application may keep the result.
Exceptions to the 30-day API period
- A different agreement: Contractual terms, including an approved ZDR arrangement, can replace the standard period.
- Usage Policy enforcement: Anthropic may retain material needed to investigate or enforce its Usage Policy.
- Legal obligations: A law, court order, or other legal requirement can require retention.
Anthropic’s commercial retention article also says that inputs and outputs associated with flagged Usage Policy violations may be retained for up to two years, while related trust-and-safety classification scores may be retained for up to seven years. Feedback data is handled separately and may be retained for five years under the commercial policy described there. These are stated policy maximums for the listed categories, not a claim that every request receives those retention periods.
How saved commercial chats and Enterprise retention differ
When an automation operates inside a commercial Claude product that saves conversations, retention is designed for continuity rather than the API’s short backend window. The service keeps chats and coding sessions available in the product until they are deleted or an account policy expires them. Deleting a conversation removes it from chat history immediately; Anthropic says backend deletion follows within 30 days, subject to legal, safety, and policy exceptions.

Claude Enterprise administrators can configure retention separately for chats and projects. Anthropic states that the default is indefinite retention unless the organization sets a custom period, and that the shortest allowed custom period is 30 days. The clock starts at a different event for each object:
- Chats: the retention period begins with the last message.
- Projects: it begins with the last project update, including creation of a chat or a change to the project’s knowledge base.
Anthropic says expired data is permanently deleted at midnight UTC on the scheduled day. A project can therefore remain active longer than expected if an automation keeps adding documents or creating chats; those updates reset the project clock.

For configuration details, consult Custom Data Retention Controls for Claude Enterprise. Set a period that matches your legal and operational requirements, then test it with a non-sensitive record before relying on the schedule.
What Zero Data Retention does—and does not—cover
Some enterprise API customers can obtain an approved Zero Data Retention agreement. Anthropic describes ZDR as a contractual arrangement under which prompts and outputs are not stored except as needed to comply with law or combat misuse. UserSafety classifier results can still be retained for Usage Policy enforcement.
Anthropic says an approved arrangement applies to the Anthropic API and Anthropic products that use the customer’s commercial organization API key, including Claude Code. It does not automatically cover Claude for Work, Claude Max, Workbench in Console, beta products, or other products unless the agreement expressly says so. Read the exact contract rather than assuming that an API key makes every Claude surface zero-retention.
Features that can override or escape ZDR
- Explicit prompt caching: cached content can require storage beyond the ordinary ZDR handling.
- Certain batch API calls: batch processing can have different storage behavior.
- Files API: files uploaded through it are retained until the customer deletes them.
- Third-party sites: information sent to a website during web search or another external action is outside Anthropic’s ZDR promise.
Review the scope and exceptions in Anthropic’s ZDR coverage article. ZDR reduces one provider’s retention; it does not erase copies made by your own automation infrastructure or by connected services.
Computer Use can expose screenshots, not just text
Computer Use is a beta capability for commercial API customers. A developer must build and enable it, and the feature acts on a computer interface. When prompted, Claude receives screenshots from the display so it can interpret the interface and choose actions, along with the user’s inputs and the resulting outputs.

Anthropic says it does not collect additional computer-interface data beyond that described, and that screenshots are deleted from its backend within 30 days by default. Usage Policy enforcement or different contractual terms can extend that period. The practical consequence is that an automation which opens an email inbox, customer record, source-code repository, or financial dashboard may send visible screen content to the model even when the written prompt contains no sensitive text.

Use a dedicated account, remove unrelated browser tabs, mask secrets, and restrict the tool to an allowlisted application. Are prompts used to train Claude?
Commercial API and organization accounts
Anthropic says commercial inputs and outputs are not used to train its models by default. The stated exceptions include material submitted as feedback or bug reports and cases where a customer explicitly opts in. A company should therefore prevent accidental feedback submission and document who is authorized to opt in.
“Not used for training” does not mean “never reviewed.” Safety systems, abuse investigations, contractual retention, and legal requirements can still involve data handling. Training status also says nothing about logs kept by your task runner or by a destination service.
Consumer accounts
Consumer settings are different. Anthropic says consumer chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models when the user enables the relevant improvement setting, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or when the user otherwise explicitly opts in. Deleting a consumer conversation removes it from visible history immediately, with backend deletion within 30 days subject to policy, legal, and safety exceptions. Do not substitute consumer settings for the controls available to an organization’s API or Enterprise account.

Map the entire automation data path
Anthropic’s policies answer only for the Anthropic service and the product surface covered by the relevant terms. An automated task often has several other recipients:
- Trigger: an email, webhook, scheduler, form, or internal event may contain the original personal data.
- Automation runner: code, a hosted workflow, browser extension, or agent server may log prompts, tool calls, errors, and outputs.
- Claude endpoint: the API, a saved commercial chat, Enterprise, or a consumer account applies its own retention and training rules.
- Connected tools: search, databases, calendars, websites, file stores, and MCP-style connectors may receive prompt fragments or tool arguments.
- Destination: the final ticket, document, CRM record, email, or analytics system may retain the generated output indefinitely.
Inspect request logs, retry queues, backups, support-access controls, and deletion APIs for every recipient. A ZDR agreement cannot control an independent provider’s retention or training policy.

For a Claude for Work organization, Anthropic says the organization’s Primary Owner manages the account and associated data. The owner can request exports that may include conversations, uploaded files, and usage patterns. The organization decides which services and features are available, while the contract with Anthropic and internal policies govern access and handling. Employees should not assume that a personal deletion request overrides the organization’s retention or legal-hold rules.

A practical privacy audit for an automated Claude task
- Inventory the inputs. List prompt text, attachments, retrieved documents, tool arguments, screenshots, and outputs. Mark personal, confidential, regulated, and public fields.
- Name the Claude surface. Record the exact API, Enterprise, commercial, or consumer account and the organization that owns its credentials.
- Choose the shortest workable retention. Use Enterprise custom retention where available; otherwise remove saved chats, files, caches, and logs according to a documented schedule.
- Verify ZDR scope. Obtain the written agreement and check whether the endpoint, product, batch operation, prompt cache, and Files API are covered.
- Reduce screen exposure. For Computer Use, isolate the browser or desktop, hide secrets, and restrict navigation to the minimum required pages.
- Disable unnecessary logging. Redact prompt bodies from application logs, traces, error reports, and replay queues. Keep identifiers only when troubleshooting requires them.
- Review connected recipients. For every website or connector, confirm retention, training use, administrator access, geographic processing, and deletion behavior directly with that provider.
- Test deletion and access. Submit a synthetic record, delete it, request an export if appropriate, and confirm which systems still contain copies.
- Document ownership. Record the Primary Owner, service accounts, approved operators, incident contact, retention schedule, and exceptions.
Common privacy failures and how to correct them
Assuming “30 days” means every copy disappears
The 30-day statement concerns Anthropic’s standard API backend. Fix the gap by setting retention and deletion rules for your runner, observability tools, backups, and destination systems.
Treating ZDR as a global switch
ZDR is an approved contractual arrangement with product and feature boundaries. Confirm coverage for each endpoint and avoid assuming it includes Work, Workbench, beta products, cached prompts, batches, or uploaded files.
Sending an entire desktop to Computer Use
Screenshots can contain unrelated confidential information. Use a clean virtual desktop or dedicated browser profile, minimize visible data, and block navigation outside the task’s allowlist.

Consumer improvement settings and safety-review conditions do not alter the commercial API default. Label account types in policy documents and user instructions.
Ignoring feedback and bug reports
Commercial inputs and outputs submitted as feedback or bug material are an exception to the no-training default and can have separate retention. Remove sensitive examples before submission and limit who can send feedback.

Bottom line for prompt privacy
Automate Claude safely by making three distinctions explicit: which Claude product receives the data, which retention and training terms apply to that product, and which other systems see the prompt or output. Standard API data is normally deleted within 30 days and commercial data is not used for training by default, but exceptions, saved chats, screenshots, files, safety processes, organizational controls, and third-party services can change the result. A data-flow inventory and a tested deletion policy are more reliable than a single label such as “private” or “zero retention.”
