Compression and resizing change different things. Compression changes how image data is stored, so lossy formats such as JPEG can discard detail to reduce the file size. Resizing changes the number of pixels or the way existing pixels are distributed across a display or print. Reducing pixel dimensions removes samples; enlarging them creates estimated samples and can soften edges or add artifacts. Simply changing a print-size or resolution value without resampling does not create or remove pixels.
Compression and resizing are not the same operation
People often say they are “resizing” a picture when they change its width and height in an app, but that phrase can describe two different actions. You might change the physical size assigned to an existing set of pixels, or you might ask software to generate a new pixel count. Only the second action is resampling.
- Compression encodes an image so it takes less storage or bandwidth. The pixel dimensions can remain exactly the same.
- Resampling changes pixel dimensions, such as turning 4,000 × 3,000 pixels into 2,000 × 1,500 pixels.
- Print-size or resolution metadata changes alter how densely existing pixels are placed on paper. They do not alter the underlying pixel data unless resampling is also enabled.
A photo can therefore be compressed without being resized, resized without changing its file format, or both. Evaluating the result requires checking file size, pixel dimensions, format, and the way the image will actually be viewed.

Lossy compression reduces a file by discarding information that the encoder judges less important or less noticeable. JPEG is a common lossy format for photographs. At moderate settings, the difference may be difficult to see at normal viewing size. As compression becomes more aggressive, fine texture and edges are simplified, and the image can develop visible block patterns, ringing around high-contrast lines, color smearing, or mosquito-like noise.

The point at which those defects become objectionable is not fixed. A portrait with smooth skin, a sky, or a lightly textured wall may tolerate substantial compression. Hair, foliage, fabric, text, architectural lines, and other high-frequency detail reveal damage sooner. Viewing distance, screen size, sharpening, and the original exposure also affect what you notice. A file-size target alone cannot tell you whether a particular image will still look acceptable.
Repeated JPEG saves can compound damage
Opening a JPEG and exporting it again with lossy settings can discard additional information. The exact effect depends on the software and whether the image is recompressed, so it is safer to keep a high-quality original and create delivery copies from that master. Do not assume that every save in every format causes the same loss: lossless formats and operations that preserve the encoded data behave differently.
Lossless compression preserves the pixels
Lossless compression reduces storage without throwing away image information. PNG uses lossless compression and supports transparency, making it useful when exact edges, text, diagrams, screenshots, or an alpha channel matter. PNG is not automatically smaller than JPEG for a photograph; its file size depends on the image and can be much larger for camera-style scenes. The relevant choice is whether preserving every pixel and transparency is worth the resulting size.
What happens when you reduce pixel dimensions
Downsampling replaces a larger pixel grid with a smaller one. Software has to combine or select information from neighboring pixels, and some detail cannot survive because there are fewer samples available. Fine lines may disappear, textures can become smoother, and sharpening may be needed after reduction. The reduction itself is not necessarily a problem: a web image often needs far fewer pixels than a camera original, and a properly downsampled file can look crisp at its intended display size.
Adobe’s Photoshop documentation states, “When you resample, it can reduce the quality of the image.” That is a warning about changing the pixel grid, not a claim that every size reduction will look visibly poor. A sensible target size, an appropriate resampling method, and one controlled conversion usually produce a better result than repeatedly changing dimensions.

Upsampling invents estimated pixels
Upsampling enlarges a pixel grid by estimating values between existing samples. It can make an image fit a larger layout, but it cannot recover detail that was never captured. Edges may look soft, halos can appear after sharpening, and patterned subjects can show interpolation artifacts. Modern algorithms can make enlargements more pleasing, but they still work from the information in the source; a small, blurry original does not become a genuinely detailed photograph merely because its width is increased.
Preserve the aspect ratio unless distortion is intentional
Changing width and height by different proportions stretches or squashes people, circles, and buildings. Use a constrained-proportion or “lock aspect ratio” control when resizing. Crop first if the destination shape is different, then resample to the final pixel dimensions. This avoids forcing the original composition into an incompatible rectangle.

A digital image has a pixel count and, optionally, a pixel-density value such as pixels per inch (ppi). If you keep the pixel count fixed and change the assigned print size, the same pixels are spread over a different physical area. A 3,000-pixel-wide image can print 10 inches wide at 300 ppi or 20 inches wide at 150 ppi. The metadata changes the calculated physical size and density; it does not add detail.
If you enable a resampling option while changing print dimensions, the application changes the pixel count as well. Increasing the requested print size with resampling creates estimated pixels; decreasing it removes pixels. Read the dialog carefully: a checkbox named “Resample,” “Resample Image,” or similar determines whether pixel data changes.
What “resolution” means in different conversations
- Pixel dimensions: the actual width and height, such as 2,000 × 1,333 pixels. This is the primary concern for screens and online services.
- Pixel density: ppi describes how densely those pixels are placed in a physical output. It matters when calculating print size.
- Printer output resolution: printers may describe their own dot placement in dots per inch (dpi), which is not the same measurement as an image’s ppi.
Adobe describes 300 ppi as a typical print-resolution setting, while also emphasizing the intended output. It is guidance, not a universal rule. A poster viewed from several feet away may need a different effective density than a small print inspected at arm’s length. What matters is whether the available pixels are sufficient for the size, viewing distance, and printing process.

Screen and print preparation require different decisions
For websites, apps, and social platforms
Start with the destination’s required pixel dimensions, not a ppi number. If a service displays an image at 1,200 pixels wide, exporting a 6,000-pixel original wastes transfer space unless the service itself will resize it. Keep enough dimensions for the largest intended display, preserve the aspect ratio, and inspect the exported file at its displayed size. A high-density phone may show more detail than a standard monitor, so avoid reducing an image below the platform’s documented or practical display needs.

Either format can be resized; the format choice does not remove the need to choose suitable dimensions.
For printing
Begin with the physical width and height you need, then check whether the source contains enough pixels for that size. You can calculate approximate effective ppi by dividing each pixel dimension by the corresponding print dimension in inches. If the result is lower than your workflow expects, enlarging the file only estimates additional pixels; it does not restore missing capture detail. Conversely, an oversized file can be downsampled to a practical pixel count before sending it to a printer.
Changing ppi metadata alone is useful when you want a different calculated print size without altering pixels. It is not an image-enhancement step. When a print dialog offers both physical dimensions and a resampling checkbox, decide first whether the pixel count should remain fixed, then verify the resulting dimensions before exporting.
Why a quality slider is not universal
Numbers labeled “quality” belong to a particular encoder and application. A value of 80 in one program may not produce the same quantization, file size, or visual result as 80 in another. Even within one encoder, two photographs can respond differently because their detail, noise, and color complexity differ. There is no single slider value that guarantees a consistent appearance or file size across all images.

Pillow’s version 12.3.0 documentation, for example, documents a JPEG quality range of 0–95 and advises avoiding values above 95 because files become very large for little additional image-quality gain. That range describes Pillow’s controls; it should not be generalized to every editor, camera, web service, or export dialog.
Use visual inspection and a measured file target together
- Export a copy at a moderate setting supported by your encoder.
- Open the result at the size people will use, then inspect 100% view for text, hair, foliage, edges, and gradients.
- Compare file size and visible defects with a slightly lower and higher setting.
- Keep the smallest version that preserves the details important for that destination.
This process is more reliable than copying a quality number from an unrelated application. If an automated service recompresses uploads, compare the service’s final download rather than only your local export.
A safe workflow for compressing or resizing
- Keep an untouched original. Store the camera file or highest-quality master separately from delivery copies. Never overwrite it with a smaller JPEG.
- Identify the destination. Record the required pixel dimensions for a screen, or the physical dimensions and expected density for print.
- Crop before resampling when composition must change. Set the final aspect ratio first so you do not resize twice or stretch the subject.
- Resize once when practical. Adobe recommends starting with dimensions suited to the output and minimizing repeated resampling. Perform the final pixel conversion in one controlled step.
- Choose the format. Use JPEG when efficient photographic compression is appropriate; use PNG when lossless data or transparency is more important.
- Set encoder options deliberately. Treat quality values as application-specific. Avoid assuming that a number from one tool maps to another.
- Inspect the exported file. Check pixel dimensions, orientation, color appearance, transparency, and file size. View it at the actual display or print scale as well as at 100%.
- Keep the export separate from the master. If a platform rejects the file or introduces artifacts, return to the original and create a new version rather than repeatedly editing the delivery copy.

Common problems and how to correct them
“My compressed photo looks blocky.”
The JPEG setting may be too aggressive for the image’s detail. Re-export from the original with less compression, or use a lossless format when exact edges or transparency are required. Re-saving an already damaged JPEG cannot restore discarded information.
“My resized image is blurry.”
Determine whether you reduced or enlarged it. Downsampling may have removed fine detail; upsampling cannot recreate detail absent from the source. Revisit the original, choose the final dimensions before exporting, and apply only moderate sharpening appropriate to the output. Do not expect sharpening to recover texture that was never captured.
“The print is the wrong size even though the pixel count is correct.”
Check the ppi metadata and the print dialog’s physical dimensions. Changing density metadata changes the calculated print size without changing pixels. If the application resampled while you changed the size, verify the new pixel dimensions and recalculate the effective ppi.

“The image looks stretched after resizing.”
The width and height were likely changed independently. Restore the original or a fresh export, lock the aspect ratio, and crop to the destination shape before resizing.
“The file is still huge after lowering quality.”
Pixel dimensions often dominate file size, and photographs with noise or intricate detail compress less efficiently. Confirm that you resized to the destination’s actual dimensions, then compare encoder settings. Switching to PNG will not usually solve a large photographic file because PNG preserves all pixels and may require more storage.
How to judge the result for a particular image
Quality cannot be predicted from a slider value or a new width alone. The result depends on the image’s content, the encoder and settings, the number of conversions, and viewing conditions. Make a small set of exports from the original, compare the regions that matter most, and evaluate them at the final display or print size. For print, also inspect a proof or sample when color, texture, and physical scale are critical.
The practical rule is straightforward: preserve the original, select dimensions for the destination, avoid unnecessary resampling, and treat compression as a trade-off between bytes and retained information. A smaller file is successful only when it still contains the detail the viewer needs.
