In most cases, T-Mobile promotional phone credits stop when the required T-Mobile service is canceled. The unpaid portion of the phone’s Equipment Installment Plan (EIP) does not disappear, so you may have to keep making device payments or pay the remaining balance on your final bill. The result depends on whether you cancel one line or the entire account, whether you merely pay off the phone, and the exact promotion attached to the device.
T-Mobile’s promotional-offer FAQ states: “Generally no, T-Mobile service is a requirement for the promotional pricing. When you cancel service, the monthly bill credits will stop and you will need to pay the full balance on your device.” Read that as the general rule, not a substitute for your offer’s terms. Check the promotion and ask T-Mobile for a line-specific payoff and credit answer before you port or cancel.
Why a bill credit does not erase your phone balance
A promotional phone deal normally has two separate financial parts:
- The EIP: your installment agreement for the device. Each monthly charge reduces the phone’s unpaid principal.
- The promotional credit: a recurring discount that offsets some or all of that monthly EIP charge while you satisfy the offer’s conditions.
A credit scheduled for a future month is not the same as principal you have already paid. If service cancellation ends the credits, the remaining EIP principal is still owed. In practical terms, losing a $30 future credit does not create a $30 refund or reduce the amount already financed; it raises the effective cost of the remaining installments.

T-Mobile’s promotional-offer FAQ says credits generally stop after service cancellation and that the full device balance may become due. Your specific offer can impose additional conditions, such as keeping an eligible line active and in good standing.
What changes when you leave in different ways?
“Leaving early” can mean several different account actions. They do not produce the same bill.

If you cancel only one line
Canceling a single line is not automatically the same as canceling the whole account. If other lines stay active, T-Mobile’s support guidance says the device payments associated with the canceled line continue monthly. That means you may not receive an immediate demand for the entire EIP principal, but you can still lose the recurring credits tied to that line.

What to verify before a single-line cancellation
- Which phone and EIP are attached to the line you intend to cancel.
- The remaining principal and number of scheduled installments.
- Whether the promotion requires that particular line to remain active, paid on time, or in good standing.
- Whether another active line on the account can satisfy any eligibility requirement. Never assume it can; the offer terms control.
- How T-Mobile will display the installments after the line is canceled: on the existing account, on a final line bill, or under another billing arrangement.
Request the answer in writing through T-Mobile support or save a transcript. A representative should be able to identify the promotion and explain the post-cancellation installment schedule before you authorize the change.
If you cancel the entire T-Mobile account
When the whole account is canceled, T-Mobile states that any remaining device balances become due on the final bill. The recurring promotional credits that would have appeared in later months generally stop because the required service no longer exists.
What the final bill can contain
- The unpaid EIP principal for each financed device.
- Service charges through the applicable billing period.
- Any other charges or credits already earned before cancellation.
- Taxes, fees, or adjustments shown under your account’s normal billing rules.
Do not calculate the payoff by multiplying the advertised monthly credit by the number of months left. The amount due is based on the device’s actual unpaid EIP balance, while the lost credits are future discounts that may no longer post. T-Mobile’s offer pages contain changing examples of installment periods, credit values, and device balances; those examples are not universal payoff formulas.
Paying off the phone early while keeping service
Early EIP payoff is a separate event from canceling service. You pay the remaining device principal, but the wireless line and account remain active. T-Mobile’s promotional FAQ says an early payoff may allow promised recurring credits to continue as account-level credits through the remaining credit period, subject to the promotion’s conditions.

Why this distinction matters
- Payoff plus active service: the EIP ends, and eligible future credits may continue under the offer.
- Payoff plus cancellation: the service requirement may disappear, so future credits can stop even though the phone is paid off.
Before paying, ask whether the offer requires a particular number of installments, an active line, or another condition. Keep the confirmation showing the payoff date and how future credits will be labeled on your bill. Do not treat a representative’s general statement about early payoff as a guarantee for a different promotion.
Porting your number to another carrier
A port-out is often the practical way to leave, but it can trigger the same consequences as canceling the affected line. T-Mobile’s cancellation guidance says service is billed through the end of the billing cycle when a number is ported out. If you port the only line on the account, the account may then be canceled and remaining device balances can become due on the final bill.
Safe order of operations
- Identify the exact promotion ID, the financed device, and the line being ported.
- Ask T-Mobile whether porting that line ends its credits and whether the EIP continues monthly or is accelerated.
- Ask how billing through the end of the cycle will appear and whether the account will close automatically.
- Obtain the remaining EIP principal and the number of credits that would otherwise remain.
- Only then submit the port request, and save the confirmation and final bill.
Existing T-Mobile credits do not automatically transfer to another carrier. The cited T-Mobile guidance does not promise any transfer, so budget on the assumption that the promotion remains with the T-Mobile line unless your written offer terms say otherwise.
Read the promotion, not just the advertising headline
Two phones advertised with the same “free” or “discounted” wording can have different conditions. T-Mobile says EIP and credit consequences vary by promotion. The offer details may specify:

- Required plan or rate plan.
- Eligible line, account, or trade-in.
- Minimum service period or number of installments.
- Good-standing and on-time-payment requirements.
- Credit start date, duration, and whether credits are applied to the line or account.
- Events that end eligibility, including cancellation, a plan change, or failure to meet another condition.
Use T-Mobile’s 2026 past-offers details page only as an example of how terms can differ. Its examples are promotion-specific commercial terms, not a general rule about every customer’s phone.
How to find your real exposure before leaving
Complete these checks while the line and account are still active:
- Find the promotion record. Look in your T-Mobile account, order confirmation, trade-in paperwork, or promotional email for the offer name or ID. Open the full terms rather than relying on the headline.
- Record the EIP balance. Note the current unpaid principal, monthly installment, and remaining installment count. A screenshot with the date helps if the account view changes after cancellation.
- Count future credits. Record the remaining credit amount and months, plus whether credits are described as line-level or account-level.
- Check eligibility conditions. Confirm the required rate plan, active-line requirement, good-standing status, and any trade-in or account restrictions.
- Define the action. Decide whether you are canceling one line, closing the account, paying off only the EIP, or porting a number. Tell T-Mobile exactly which one you intend.
- Request a written estimate. Ask for the expected installment treatment, credit end date, billing-cycle date, and final amount. Save the chat transcript, email, or case number.
Questions to ask T-Mobile before you authorize anything
T-Mobile itself recommends reviewing the offer terms and contacting it before canceling. Use specific questions so the answer addresses your promotion rather than a generic policy:
- “What is the promotion ID attached to this device and line?”
- “If I cancel this one line but keep the account open, do the credits stop, and do the EIP installments continue monthly?”
- “If I close the entire account, what device principal will appear on the final bill?”
- “If I pay off the EIP today and keep service, will the remaining credits continue as account-level credits, and for how long?”
- “If I port this number, when does billing stop, and what happens to this promotion?”
- “Are there any plan, good-standing, trade-in, or installment-count conditions I would violate?”
Ask the representative to distinguish credits already posted from credits scheduled for future months. Those are different amounts and can be treated differently after an account change.

Reviewing the final bill and fixing an unexpected result
When the change is complete, compare the final bill with the records you saved. Check the service-through date, device principal, credits posted before cancellation, and any adjustment or reversal. If a charge differs from the estimate, contact T-Mobile promptly and provide the promotion ID, line number, cancellation or port date, and the representative’s case number.
Do not assume that an apparently missing credit is a billing error until you confirm whether the credit was scheduled after the service requirement ended. Conversely, do not assume a large device charge is correct without checking whether you canceled only one line, because T-Mobile’s guidance treats that situation differently from whole-account cancellation.
Common mistakes that make the bill more expensive
- Confusing a “free phone” with a paid-off phone. The device is often free only after all qualifying credits post.
- Canceling before reading the offer. A plan change, line cancellation, or account closure can have different effects.
- Assuming a single-line cancellation accelerates every balance. T-Mobile says payments tied to that line continue monthly when other account lines remain.
- Assuming early payoff always forfeits credits. T-Mobile’s FAQ describes possible continuation after payoff when service remains, subject to the offer.
- Porting first and asking questions later. A port can start the cancellation and billing process before you have documented the promotion outcome.
- Using an advertised credit as your payoff estimate. Only the current EIP balance and your written terms identify what you owe.
A practical decision rule
If your priority is keeping the remaining promotional value, do not cancel or port until T-Mobile confirms that the exact line and promotion remain eligible. If your priority is leaving immediately, treat future credits as uncertain, reserve enough money for the unpaid EIP principal, and expect service billing through the applicable cycle. If you only want to own the phone, investigate an early EIP payoff while retaining service; that path is materially different from canceling and may preserve eligible credits.
