When an online-only game’s required servers disappear, the result can range from losing multiplayer and other online features to being unable to authenticate, install, or launch the game at all. The outcome depends on what the title’s servers do, whether the publisher provides an offline or self-hosted transition, and the platform and account systems involved.
A shutdown does not automatically create a refund entitlement, and buying a digital game does not come with a universal promise that it will remain playable forever. Consumer rights depend on the country, seller, contract, and whether the service failed to conform to what was promised or reasonably expected.
What “online-only” really means
“Online-only” is a practical dependency, not merely a multiplayer label. A game may look like a single-player product while still contacting a publisher-controlled service for a required function.

Some titles keep most game data on the device but require a server to verify ownership, issue a session token, or check an account before the main menu opens. If that authentication endpoint is retired, an otherwise installed copy may stop launching.

Core gameplay may run remotely
In other games, the server runs the world simulation, stores progression, matches players, or validates every important action. Removing that service can eliminate the game itself rather than just its matchmaking or leaderboards.
Hybrid games can lose only part of their content
A title may retain a campaign or local practice mode while losing seasons, cloud saves, inventory, events, or competitive play. The word “online-only” therefore does not predict one universal shutdown screen; you have to identify each required service.

What a shutdown can do to a game
Total inaccessibility
If authentication and gameplay are both mandatory, the practical result can be a nonfunctional purchase. Deleting and reinstalling does not help when the installer or first launch still needs an unavailable service. A physical disc or a local backup also cannot recreate a publisher’s missing servers.
Partial loss of features
When only online components are retired, the executable may continue to offer local missions, training, split-screen play, or previously downloaded content. Cloud-dependent progression, matchmaking, online economies, and live events can still be gone permanently.
Account and download consequences
A publisher can stop new sales, remove a listing, revoke a digital licence, or disable the download entitlement separately from shutting down gameplay servers. Those actions are related but not identical. Existing owners may retain access after delisting, while a licence revocation can prevent a former owner from downloading or launching the title.

The Crew: a documented complete lockout
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s March 2025 digital-platform-services report says Ubisoft revoked digital licences for The Crew in April 2024. According to that report, users could no longer download, install, or play the game; Ubisoft cited server-infrastructure and licensing constraints. The game had been sold until December 2023, as recorded in a 2024 European Parliament written question.
This is a concrete example, not a rule for every shutdown. The European Parliament document records a question put to the Commission, not the Commission’s final legal answer. Other publishers may leave an offline mode, provide a patch, or disable only network features.

Delisting is not the same as a server shutdown
Delisting means a title is no longer offered for new purchase in a store. It does not, by itself, prove that existing owners lose the ability to download or play it. A shutdown means a service required by the game has ended; a licence revocation can add a separate access problem.
To determine what happened, look for three distinct notices:
- Store delisting: new customers cannot buy the game, but prior licences may continue to work.
- Service retirement: a named server, account system, or online mode has an end date.
- Licence or entitlement change: the publisher or platform removes the ability to download, install, or launch a previously acquired copy.
Do not infer the third outcome from the first. Check the publisher’s announcement and the platform’s account page for the specific title.

How publishers can preserve a discontinued game
The European Commission’s 2026 assessment identifies several possible transition paths. They are technical and legal options, not universal duties.
Convert it to an offline version
A patch can remove mandatory sign-in, replace server validation with local checks, and store progression on the device. This is usually the clearest route for a single-player game, but it may require redesigning economies, anti-cheat checks, downloadable content, and cloud saves.
Allow player-hosted servers
Publishing dedicated-server software can move hosting from the company to communities, schools, or private groups. Players then need compatible server binaries, documentation, network configuration, and a way to authenticate or transfer existing accounts.
Use peer-to-peer connections
A peer-to-peer model can let players connect directly rather than through a central simulation server. It may not replace services such as matchmaking, moderation, anti-cheat, statistics, or persistent worlds, and it can introduce security and reliability trade-offs.
Release source code and assets
Making code and game assets available could let a community maintain a title, but copyright, other intellectual-property rights, confidential know-how, third-party licences, and personal-data obligations can prevent a complete release. A publisher may own only part of the technology used by the game.

The Commission specifically lists “converting games to an offline standalone version, allowing players to run self-hosted servers or connect via peer-to-peer (P2P) connections, or releasing the source code and assets.” That wording describes possibilities, not a promise that any one approach is feasible for a particular title.
Are players entitled to a refund?
There is no worldwide, automatic shutdown refund. The answer depends on the law where you bought the game, the seller and platform, the purchase date, the contract, and what the product was represented to provide.
EU context as of 2026
The European Commission’s 2026 assessment says EU consumer legislation does not set a specific supply duration for digital content and services, including online video games, and does not generally require traders to keep them usable after commercial supply ends. In the Commission’s words: “EU consumer protection legislation does not set specific requirements for the duration of the supply of digital content and services, including online video games, nor does it require traders to ensure that consumers can continue using digital content and services once their commercial supply has ended.”
That does not eliminate every remedy. EU rules can apply when digital content or a digital service fails to conform to the contract or to what consumers could reasonably expect. Depending on the facts, a proportionate price reduction or refund may be available. The assessment is general EU context, not a decision about an individual purchase, and it does not establish a guaranteed refund whenever a server closes.

Store policies are narrower than consumer law
Ubisoft’s digital PC store policy illustrates why the seller matters. For eligible purchases made through that store, its standard policy describes a refund within 14 days of purchase and with no more than two hours played. The policy also says it does not override statutory refund rights. Those conditions are a store example, not a shutdown-specific guarantee and not a rule for purchases through other retailers, consoles, or regions.

Contract terms can affect preservation and remedies
Ubisoft’s US Store Terms of Sale, last updated in September 2024, restrict copying, adaptation, and reverse engineering except where licence terms or applicable law permit it. This shows why independently modifying a client or reconstructing a service can raise contractual and intellectual-property issues. It is not a statement of the law in every country or for every publisher.

- Identify the exact dependency. Read the notice and determine whether the end date applies to authentication, gameplay servers, downloads, cloud saves, or only a particular mode.
- Record your transaction details. Save the receipt, order number, purchase date, platform, account, edition, and any subscription involved. These facts determine which seller and policy can answer a refund request.
- Check for an official transition. Look for a patch that enables offline play, a server package, peer-to-peer instructions, or an account-transfer process. Do not assume a community workaround is authorised or secure.
- Download legitimate updates before the deadline. If the publisher says existing owners will retain a downloadable offline build, install it while the entitlement remains available and verify that it starts without contacting the retired service.
- Test every mode you care about. Launch the game while signed out, try a saved campaign, and check local multiplayer or other advertised offline features. A successful launch does not prove that cloud saves or future reinstalls will work.
- Ask the seller, not only the publisher. The retailer or platform that processed payment can explain its refund window and statutory-rights process. Include the shutdown notice and describe the concrete loss of functionality.
- Do not rely on hardware fixes. A faster computer, a new console, networking equipment, or a repair utility cannot restore a server-side account, simulation, or licence service that no longer exists.
How to judge the likely outcome for a specific title
Use these questions in order:
- Can the game reach its main menu and load a save without contacting a publisher service?
- Does the server merely authenticate ownership, or does it run the world and validate gameplay?
- Has the publisher promised an offline patch, self-hosting, or peer-to-peer support?
- Will the platform continue to provide downloads to existing owners?
- Which country’s consumer law, seller terms, platform rules, and purchase date govern the transaction?
The answers place a game on a spectrum from “online features removed” to “no practical way to launch or reinstall.” They also separate a technical outcome from a legal remedy: a game can become inaccessible without creating an automatic refund, while a particular buyer may still have a claim because of non-conformity or a statutory guarantee.
What policy is changing?
On June 16, 2026, the European Commission announced engagement with the video-game industry and consumer representatives following the European citizens’ initiative about the “disabling of videogames by publishers.” The Commission’s published material describes dialogue and existing consumer-law safeguards; it does not create a universal EU rule requiring every discontinued game to remain playable.

Because policy discussions and national interpretations can change, verify the current Commission guidance and your country’s consumer authority before relying on a legal conclusion.
Why preservation is difficult
Keeping an online game alive is more than leaving an executable on a hard drive. Authentication databases, server infrastructure, anti-cheat technology, payment and account systems, third-party middleware, copyright permissions, and confidential know-how may all be necessary. A publisher may also have licensing obligations that prevent it from distributing music, brands, software components, or server code after a contract ends.
Those constraints explain why an offline conversion or community-server release can be expensive or impossible for some titles, even when players still want access. They do not, however, prove that a publisher is always excused from a consumer-law obligation in a particular case.
