When a live-service game shuts down, you may lose access to its in-game items and currency, and there is no universal rule that guarantees a refund. The outcome depends on the game’s terms, what you bought and where, the shutdown circumstances, and consumer law where you live. A publisher’s no-refund term does not necessarily override mandatory local rights, but a shutdown alone does not automatically entitle every player to cash compensation.
Why purchases may disappear when a game closes
Many publishers describe virtual items as limited rights to use content within a game or account, rather than permanent property that remains usable independently of the service. For example, Supercell’s terms characterize virtual items as limited and revocable, and reserve the ability to modify or eliminate them. Its store refund and cancellation policy says unused virtual items are not compensated when an account closes, except where applicable law requires otherwise. That is an example of one publisher’s contractual language, not a rule that applies to every game.
When the servers or account services required to use an item end, the item may become inaccessible even if it was paid for and never consumed. The same issue can apply to unspent currency, cosmetics, season passes, or other entitlements tied to that service. Whether the publisher must preserve access or compensate you is a separate question governed by the agreement and applicable law.

Not automatically. Refund eligibility can depend on the original transaction, whether digital content was delivered or used, the seller’s policy, and consumer-protection law. A storefront’s ordinary cancellation rules and a claim that a service ended earlier than reasonably expected are related but distinct issues.

Storefront cancellation rules
For U.S. purchases, PlayStation Store’s cancellation policy generally says delivered in-game consumables cannot be refunded unless they are faulty. The policy also recognizes that local law may provide additional rights. This policy addresses cancellation of a transaction; it does not, by itself, resolve every claim arising when a game later shuts down.
Possible consumer-law remedies
Consumer law may qualify publisher terms. In an analysis dated 16 June 2026, the European Commission discussed discontinuation under the EU Digital Content Directive. It said that ending a digital service sooner than a consumer could reasonably expect may amount to non-conformity. Under certain conditions, a proportionate refund could cover terminated ancillary purchases or currency left unspent. This is a conditional assessment, not a blanket refund promise: the facts and applicable requirements matter. The Commission noted that the directive has applied since 1 January 2022, that no Court of Justice of the European Union rulings then provided a binding interpretation of its application, and that it planned to report on its review by the end of 2026. Check for later legal developments before relying on that analysis.

What happens to unused currency and paid items?
There is no universal conversion, carryover, or cash-out rule. A balance may become inaccessible once the game or account ends. As one platform-specific example, PlayStation’s U.S. terms state that service-dependent virtual items and currency balances will not be retained or accessible after account termination, and provide no refund except where required by law or the agreement. This is an example of terms for that service, not a statement of every publisher’s policy or every shutdown scenario.
Check the closure announcement for whether purchases have been disabled, when play ends, whether there is a final period to spend a balance, and whether the publisher offers refunds, credits, or a transfer to another service. Do not assume an offer exists unless the publisher announces it.

How to assess your situation
These details can change the answer:
- What you bought: distinguish consumable currency, an unused balance, a cosmetic or other item, a season pass, a subscription, and the game itself.
- Where you bought it: identify whether the seller was the publisher, a console storefront, a mobile app store, or another party. The relevant refund process may differ.
- What happened before closure: note whether the item was consumed, delivered but unused, or not delivered; whether the purchase was recent; and whether access continued after the announcement.
- What was represented at sale: consider any stated service duration, expected availability, and the timing and detail of the shutdown notice.
- Where you live: consumer rights and mandatory contract rules vary by jurisdiction.
What to do if you want to make a claim
- Preserve evidence. Save receipts, platform transaction IDs, the shutdown announcement, and the terms that applied when you bought the item.
- Read the closure notice. Record the last-play date, purchase cutoff, any opportunity to spend remaining currency, and any announced refund, credit, or transition plan.
- Contact the seller and publisher in writing. Ask specifically about unused currency, recently purchased or undelivered items, subscriptions, and any announced remedies. If you bought through a storefront, check its process as well as the publisher’s.
- Check the rules where you live. Consult a local consumer-protection authority or qualified adviser for a specific dispute. Do not assume a no-refund clause displaces mandatory rights, and do not assume an exceptional government refund program applies to ordinary shutdowns.
Why high-profile game refunds do not set a general shutdown rule
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s Fortnite refund program addressed unwanted or unauthorized charges and related account restrictions, not compensation for a game closing. The FTC says it sent 969,173 payments totaling more than $126 million to eligible U.S. claimants in June 2025; the claims deadline has passed. That settlement shows that a defined billing-practices case can produce refunds, but it does not establish a general remedy for lost access after a shutdown.
