Short answer: you may lose access to the game, its server-stored progress and unused virtual items, but the outcome is set by the publisher’s shutdown notice, the transaction platform and the law where you bought the game. Delisting, purchase suspension and server closure are separate events. A publisher might provide a time-limited refund for qualifying paid currency, offer a case-specific transfer, refuse refunds except where consumer law requires them, or publish a deadline for requesting account data.
Find the official notice first. Record every date, preserve receipts and account identifiers, and submit any refund or data request before its stated deadline. Do not delete the app, unlink the account or erase personal data until you have checked whether those actions could prevent verification.
Delisting, purchase cutoff and server closure are different events
A game can disappear from an app store while an installed copy still opens. Delisting normally stops new downloads or reinstalls; it does not necessarily end service immediately. The publisher may leave existing installations playable during a transition period, stop new purchases first, and then shut down the servers on a later date.

Server closure is the date that matters for online play and server-side records. Once the backend is offline, login, matchmaking, cloud saves, inventories and other connected features can stop working even if the app remains on your phone. The dates and order vary by game, so copy them from the publisher’s notice rather than assuming that a store listing’s removal is the end-of-service date.

Dates to extract from a notice
- When the game is removed from each app store.
- When top-ups, subscriptions or other purchases stop.
- The final server-closure time, including time zone if given.
- The last day for a refund application.
- The last day for a support contact or account-data request.
- When the publisher will delete account information or close support.
What you actually own when you buy virtual items
An in-game purchase usually grants a licence to use digital content under the game’s terms, not ownership of a transferable object or a cash balance. The terms can limit, suspend or revoke that access when an account closes or the service ends. This is why a payment receipt alone does not guarantee that unused gems, coins, passes or characters will remain available after shutdown.
Supercell’s terms, for example, state that the company is not generally required to refund unused virtual items when an account is closed, while preserving statutory consumer rights. That clause illustrates a contractual position, not a universal rule. The law applying to your purchase may provide rights that the terms cannot remove.
Paid currency versus promotional currency
Shutdown plans often distinguish currency bought with money from promotional or earned currency. They may also count only the unused balance at a specified cutoff, exclude currency already spent, or apply a published conversion value. Keep screenshots or records of the balances the notice says are relevant; do not assume every item in your inventory is eligible.
Refunds: the possible routes and their limits
There is no industry-wide promise that unused currency will be refunded. A publisher can create a dedicated shutdown process with an application form, a closing-time balance, account-holder verification, a minimum eligibility rule or a fixed valuation. Another publisher may say that leftover balances are not refundable under its shutdown plan, except where local law requires a remedy.
Publisher shutdown programs
LINE:GUNDAM WARS published separate dates for stopping downloads, ending service, opening refund applications, closing applications and ending support. Its notice explained how to locate the relevant paid-currency balance and supplied a currency-specific valuation. Players had to apply during the stated window; the announcement was a game-specific procedure rather than a general mobile-game standard.

Soul of Eden’s termination notice likewise required the actual account holder to use its refund process. It warned that deleting personal data before a claim was completed could leave the company without information needed to process or verify the refund. Read refund and deletion instructions together before taking either action.
App-store refund requests
Google Play provides a user refund-request process, while developers manage orders and refunds in Play Console and are responsible for applying their policy and the law. Apple’s developer guidance directs users to Apple’s refund-request flow. These platform channels do not decide whether a particular shutdown balance qualifies. If the game’s notice supplies a separate publisher form or support address, use that route as well; an app-store request is not automatically a substitute.
Approval can depend on the transaction date, product type, region, account ownership, prior refunds and the evidence supplied. A request is not a guarantee of payment. Keep the confirmation number and any follow-up message until the matter is resolved.
When no refund is offered
Some notices expressly exclude remaining currency. Electronic Arts’ shutdown plan for The Sims Mobile said purchases would stop, the game would be delisted and existing purchases would work only until the announced January 2026 end date. It also said server-stored progress would become unavailable and that leftover currency would not qualify for a refund under that plan. A different game may take a different position, so do not transfer this result to another title.
What happens to progress and personal data
Progress and personal data are related but distinct. Progress is game state: levels, characters, inventory, achievements and saved activity. Personal data is information tied to an account, such as an identifier, email address, purchase records or support history. Both can sit on the publisher’s systems, but they may have different retention rules and request procedures.

Server-stored progress
If progress is stored on the publisher’s servers, deleting the app does not create a backup and keeping the app installed cannot keep the server alive. The Sims Mobile notice stated: “Because game progress is stored on our servers, saved data will no longer be available.” After the shutdown date, an offline copy may not contain enough information to restore an account.
Account-information deletion
FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS said account information would be deleted after end-of-service procedures. Its notice required account verification for inquiries about unused paid Red Crystals and told players not to delete the app or switch and reinstall before the refund process finished. This demonstrates why a refund claim and a deletion request should be planned together.
Apple’s account-deletion guidance says: “Deleting an account removes the account from the developer’s records, along with any data associated with the account that the developer isn’t legally required to maintain.” The statement describes account deletion obligations for apps that support account creation; it does not promise that a particular game will export progress or retain it after a shutdown. A developer may have to keep some records for legal, fraud-prevention or accounting reasons.
Requesting a copy of data
Some publishers set a short window for data requests. Niantic’s Peridot sunset notice gave players a deadline to contact support for account data and separately said past purchases would not be refunded globally except where required by law. A data request is therefore not the same as a refund request, and submitting one does not extend the other’s deadline.

What to do before the shutdown
- Locate the official notice. Use the publisher’s support site, in-game message or verified announcement. Capture the page or save a PDF, and note the publication date and time zone.
- Build a deadline list. Record delisting, purchase cutoff, server closure, refund, data-request and support-ending dates in your calendar. Treat an application deadline as earlier than the final shutdown if the notice says so.
- Identify the account. Copy the player ID, account name, linked email, platform account and any server or region identifier. Take screenshots of the profile and paid-currency balance if the notice instructs you to verify a closing balance.
- Collect purchase evidence. Save app-store receipts, order IDs, dates, product names, payment-region information and relevant bank or card records. Redact unrelated financial details before sending documents to support.
- Check eligibility wording. Determine whether the plan covers paid currency only, excludes promotional currency, requires a minimum balance, uses a fixed conversion value or limits claims to the original account holder.
- Submit through the specified channel. Complete the publisher’s form or support process exactly as instructed. If the transaction platform has a separate refund route, submit it when appropriate and keep both confirmation records.
- Protect verification. Do not delete the app, switch devices, unlink the account or request account erasure until you know the refund or data process no longer needs those records.
- Request data separately. If you want account information, submit the data request before its deadline and ask what format will be supplied. Do not assume it includes playable progress or a restorable game save.
- Save the outcome. Keep confirmations, ticket numbers, replies and any refund statement. If support stops responding, those records help establish what you submitted and when.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming delisting means immediate shutdown
An installed app may continue until a later server date, but the window can be short. Use the dates in the notice and avoid spending money after the purchase cutoff.

Waiting until the final day
Identity checks, store processing and time-zone differences can make a last-minute submission fail. Apply as soon as the publisher opens the process.
Deleting data to “protect” privacy before claiming a refund
A refund may require account ownership and transaction matching. One published notice specifically warned that deletion could prevent processing. Read the deletion section after reviewing the refund requirements.
Treating every balance as cash
Promotional currency, earned items, consumed purchases and paid currency can receive different treatment. Use the notice’s definitions and valuation, not the number shown in a general inventory screen.
Believing a store refund automatically covers a shutdown claim
Platform policies and publisher programs are separate. A store may handle a transaction refund while the publisher handles a special unused-currency process. Follow the channel named for each claim and do not submit contradictory information.

Expecting progress to be exportable
A data copy may contain account records without a usable save file. Unless the publisher explicitly offers an export or migration, plan on the online progress becoming inaccessible at server closure.

How local law affects the result
Refund rights, digital-content guarantees, cooling-off rules and data-access remedies depend on the purchaser’s jurisdiction, transaction date and facts. Contract terms can describe the publisher’s policy, but they do not necessarily override mandatory consumer protections. If the notice conflicts with what you believe local law requires, preserve your receipts and correspondence and consult the relevant consumer-protection authority or qualified adviser.
Geography matters in other ways too. A publisher may process claims by purchase region, use a local currency valuation or apply different rules to Apple, Google Play and direct web payments. State your country or region accurately when submitting a claim; do not select a different storefront merely to obtain a preferred outcome.

- Have purchases stopped? If not, confirm whether spending is sensible and whether purchased items will function until closure.
- What balance is eligible? Separate paid from promotional currency and note the measurement time.
- Who must apply? Check account-holder, verification and minimum-balance requirements.
- Which route applies? Distinguish the publisher form, app-store process and any legal complaint route.
- What happens to data? Look for export instructions, request deadlines and deletion timing; do not equate a data copy with playable progress.
- What law governs? Use the purchase region and payment platform, not the location of a game’s fan community.
Bottom line for players
A shutdown does not produce one universal result. You might keep temporary access to an installed app, receive a calculated refund for qualifying paid currency, get a one-off transfer offer, or receive nothing for unused items under the publisher’s plan. Server-stored progress can disappear, while account information may be deleted, retained for legal reasons or available only through a short data-request window. The safest response is administrative: find the official notice, record every date, preserve evidence, submit the correct requests early and keep the account intact until verification is finished.
