Short answer: an HMD market exit usually changes where you buy a phone and how you obtain service before it cancels existing rights. Your commercial warranty is governed by the covered country or region in HMD’s written terms; an imported device may not qualify for local warranty service. In the European Union, the seller remains responsible for the statutory legal guarantee, normally at least two years for faulty or non-conforming goods. Repairs may move to a central or cross-border facility, and retail withdrawal alone does not prove that security updates have stopped.
The practical risk is service friction—shipping, parts, diagnostics and longer turnaround—not automatic cancellation of every warranty or update promise. The steps below show how to establish who owes you service and how to preserve your options.
What a market exit changes—and what it does not
When a manufacturer stops selling phones in a country, three systems can continue on different tracks:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Commercial warranty: HMD’s voluntary warranty follows the written territorial terms attached to the device and purchase. The 2024 HMD Global Oy warranty states, “This Warranty is not valid outside of the Covered Country or Region.” A local exit does not rewrite that document, but a claim made in a different country can be excluded or redirected.
- Consumer-law guarantee: where you bought the phone from an EU seller, the legal guarantee is a separate obligation owed by the seller. It is not replaced by HMD’s commercial warranty.
- Software support: update availability depends on the model’s published support commitment and applicable rules, not simply on whether stores still carry the phone.
A company can therefore stop local sales while continuing warranty repairs and security updates for devices already sold. Conversely, a warranty can remain formally valid while local intake, parts inventory or shipping arrangements become slower or more expensive.

Which warranty applies to your phone?
HMD’s commercial warranty is territorial
Start with the warranty page or certificate for the exact model and the country where it was purchased. The covered-country wording matters more than the country in which you now live. A phone imported from another region may have different exclusions, a different service route or no local coverage at all. HMD’s terms also say that coverage can be lost if you do not install the latest publicly available updates within a reasonable time. Keep a copy of the applicable terms because regional pages and model conditions can change.
For manufacturer-software errors, the warranty says HMD will make the latest software available for reinstallation or provide another reasonable remedy. That promise concerns correcting a covered software fault; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted, error-free operation or of updates forever.
EU legal guarantee is claimed from the seller
If you bought the phone from a business in the European Union, the statutory legal guarantee is normally a minimum of two years for goods that are faulty or do not conform to the sales contract. Your Europe guidance makes the allocation explicit: “Updates might be provided by third parties, but the seller remains responsible if the updates fail.” The seller can involve HMD, a distributor or a repair centre, but cannot simply send you away because the manufacturer has left the market.

The legal guarantee and a commercial warranty can overlap. Use the route that gives you the clearest remedy: contact the seller first for an EU conformity problem, and use HMD’s regional support route for a manufacturer-warranty claim or technical escalation. Outside the EU, rights and time limits depend on local law and the sales contract.
What to do if you need a warranty repair
- Collect proof. Save the receipt or invoice, IMEI, model number, warranty certificate, purchase date and the country of sale. Photograph the device and record its condition before shipping.
- Identify the exact coverage. Check the model-specific HMD warranty page for the purchase country. Do not infer coverage from a phone’s language, SIM region or the country in which it is currently being used.
- Choose the correct first contact. For an EU legal-guarantee claim, write to the retailer or other seller. For a commercial warranty claim, use HMD regional support or its authorised repair workflow.
- Ask for written confirmation. Request the case number, receiving country, shipping label instructions, estimated turnaround, data-erasure policy and whether the repair will preserve the remaining warranty.
- Back up and reset carefully. Back up photos, messages, authenticator codes and eSIM information. Remove screen locks only when the service instructions require it, then perform a factory reset if your data can be erased safely.
- Keep the paper trail. Save emails, tracking numbers, diagnostic results and any refusal that cites the device’s region. These records are useful to the seller, a payment provider or a consumer-protection body.
Can an HMD or Nokia phone still be repaired after local stores close?
HMD continues to publish an online repair and replacement workflow for HMD and Nokia smartphones, tablets and some feature phones, including status tracking. A local retail shutdown does not by itself terminate that workflow. The operational question is whether your country and model still have an intake point, an authorised centre and parts.
Questions to ask support
- Is my exact model accepted for warranty or paid repair in my country of residence?
- Where is the designated authorised centre, and must I ship the device across a border?
- Are genuine display, battery and board-level parts currently available?
- Who pays outbound and return shipping, customs charges and diagnostic fees?
- What happens if the centre cannot source a part—repair, replacement, refund or return unrepaired?
- Will the phone be wiped, and how is personal data handled?
Get the answers in writing before sending the phone. A centralised route can preserve manufacturer oversight, but cross-border transport can add customs delays, insurance questions and longer turnaround. If no authorised route is offered, ask the seller what remedy it will provide under applicable consumer law.

Authorised repair versus an independent repairer
An independent shop can be the fastest option after a local exit, but it changes the risk profile. Compare the routes on the factors that affect both the immediate fix and your remaining rights.

|---|---|---|
| Warranty preservation | Designed to preserve a valid manufacturer warranty when the claim meets its terms. | May be excluded from commercial warranty coverage if unauthorised parts or work caused the fault; check the written terms first. |
| Parts | Uses the manufacturer’s authorised supply channel when parts are available. | Quality and source vary; ask whether parts are genuine, refurbished or compatible. |
| Software and firmware | Better access to approved diagnostics, firmware and repair procedures. | May have limited access to calibration tools or firmware; ask how biometric, camera and display calibration will be completed. |
| Shipping and turnaround | Could require cross-border shipping and a longer queue after local operations close. | Often local and faster for common battery or screen work. |
| Data handling | Follow the provider’s documented intake and erasure process; still back up and reset where possible. | Obtain a written privacy and retention policy before handing over an unlocked device. |
| Total cost | Warranty work may be free, but shipping or out-of-warranty diagnostics can apply. | Usually a quoted repair price; parts quality and future failures affect the real cost. |
| Consumer-law remedy | Does not replace your right to claim against an EU seller. | Repairing privately does not transfer the seller’s legal-guarantee obligation; keep the original seller claim separate. |
For a phone still within a seller’s legal-guarantee period, opening an independent repair first can complicate proof of the original defect. Ask the seller for its proposed remedy before authorising third-party work.
Will software and security updates stop?
Stopping sales is not the same as stopping updates. Check the model’s published support promise, the date it was placed on the relevant market and any applicable regulation. HMD’s warranty does not promise uninterrupted or error-free software, but it does address manufacturer-software errors by making the latest software available for reinstallation or offering another reasonable remedy. Install available security updates while the phone remains supported; the warranty language warns that failing to install the latest public updates within a reasonable time can affect coverage.

EU minimums for covered smartphones and tablets
For covered models placed on the EU market, Regulation (EU) 2023/1670 ecodesign requirements establish minimum availability periods. The European Commission’s summary specifies:
| Requirement | Minimum period and condition |
|---|---|
| Operating-system upgrades | Five years after the model’s end of placement on the EU market. |
| Critical spare parts | Seven years after the end of sales; professional repairers must be able to obtain covered critical parts within five to ten working days. |
| Start date of the EU rules | 20 June 2025. |
These are regulatory minimums for qualifying EU models, not a blanket seven-year promise for every HMD or Nokia device sold worldwide. A model’s market-placement date, product classification and covered parts determine whether a particular requirement applies. The rules also concern parts access and repairability; they do not guarantee that every update will be bug-free or that a local service desk will remain open.

Who is responsible for a failed update?
- EU seller: remains responsible for a lack of conformity, including an update failure covered by the legal guarantee, even if updates are delivered by HMD or another provider.
- HMD: may owe a remedy under its commercial warranty and is the party most likely to provide firmware, diagnostics or reinstallation instructions.
- Carrier: can affect network provisioning, SIM compatibility or the timing of carrier-tested firmware, but it is not automatically the party responsible for a defective handset under the sales guarantee.
Describe the symptom precisely: failed installation, repeated boot loops, missing security patches, battery drain after an update or loss of a promised function. Attach screenshots and update versions rather than reporting only that the phone is “unsupported.”

What the 2025 US example tells you—and what it does not
In July 2025, Android Central reported that HMD was scaling back its United States presence. HMD said existing devices would continue to receive the warranties and security updates that had been promised. That is evidence of the company’s stated policy at that time, not a universal guarantee for every country, model or future change. Treat country-specific support statements as more relevant than a headline about a global strategy.
How to reduce risk before support changes
- Record the IMEI, serial number, purchase date, seller and covered country in a secure note.
- Download or save the current warranty terms and the model’s update-support statement as PDFs or screenshots.
- Keep at least two backups, including one that does not depend on the phone being able to boot.
- Install pending security updates and test recovery options while official support is reachable.
- For an EU purchase, keep the seller’s legal name and complaint channel; the seller—not a closed local showroom—is your legal counterparty.
- Check battery health and charging-port condition early. A routine repair is easier to arrange before parts inventories become constrained.
Common situations and the correct route
You bought locally, and the local shop has closed
Use the seller’s surviving legal entity or customer-service channel for a legal-guarantee claim. Separately check HMD’s authorised repair portal for a regional intake address. Ask who will pay shipping and whether a replacement or refund is available if repair is impossible.
You imported the phone from another country
Locate the original invoice and the warranty’s covered-country definition. Local support may refuse a commercial warranty claim even when the phone is genuine. The seller in the original sales country is the first party to contact; shipping the device back may be required.
The phone still works, but updates have stopped appearing
Confirm the model variant, software channel, available storage and network connection. Check the published support period and the device’s last security-patch date. If the phone is within a promised or legally required period, report the missing update to the seller and HMD with screenshots and the exact build number.
The authorised centre says parts are unavailable
Request the statement in writing and ask for the proposed alternative: back-order, equivalent replacement, refund or return unrepaired. For a qualifying EU model, ask how the centre is meeting the ecodesign parts-availability requirement. Do not approve an independent repair until you understand how it could affect a pending seller or warranty claim.
Bottom line for owners
An HMD market exit is primarily a change in distribution and service logistics. Preserve your documents, identify the purchase country, claim against the EU seller when the legal guarantee applies, and obtain written confirmation of HMD’s authorised route, parts status and update schedule. Retail withdrawal alone does not erase a valid warranty or prove that security updates have ended, but an imported phone, an out-of-region claim and a closed intake centre can materially change how—and how quickly—you receive a remedy.
