If a UK retailer enters administration, your gift card may stop working and a paid order may not be delivered. The administrator or a buyer may choose to honour vouchers and complete orders, especially when that helps preserve the business, but there is generally no automatic obligation to do so. Check official notices, save every payment and order record, ask your card provider about possible remedies, and register a claim with the administrator for anything still owed. If no other remedy applies, you may rank as an unsecured creditor and recover little or nothing.
What administration means for a customer
Administration is a formal UK insolvency procedure in which an appointed administrator takes control of a company’s affairs, business and property. The objectives can include rescuing the company as a going concern or achieving a better result for creditors than an immediate winding-up. The appointment itself does not answer the practical questions customers care about: whether shops or a website will keep trading, whether a particular order will ship, or whether a voucher will be accepted.
The administrator must act for creditors as a whole, rather than simply adopting the promises made by the retailer before the appointment. A purchaser that acquires some or all of the business makes its own commercial decisions. As the UK government’s response to the Law Commission’s consumer-prepayments report put it:
“Administrators or purchasers of the new business are under no obligation to fulfil orders or honour gift vouchers, but it is reasonably common for them to do so, especially if they are attempting to retain value in the business name for example because there is the possibility of continuing or restarting the business as a going concern.”

That statement describes the general position; it is not a promise that any particular retailer will accept a voucher or deliver an order.
Gift cards and vouchers
Will a gift card still work?
Only the administrator or a buyer’s published policy can tell you. They may keep vouchers usable to maintain customer goodwill and the value of the trading business, but they are not generally required to honour them. Some administrations continue accepting cards for a period; others suspend them immediately, accept them only in physical stores, impose a reduced redemption value, or reject them altogether. Do not assume that a card’s printed expiry date, previous terms or the retailer’s normal returns policy still governs after the appointment.
What to check in an announcement
- Whether gift cards and e-vouchers are accepted at all.
- Which stores, website or successor business will process them.
- Whether a percentage of the balance must be paid in cash or by another method.
- Whether new purchases can be made with the voucher or only exchanges are allowed.
- Any deadline, balance limit or revised expiry date.
- The procedure for submitting an unused balance as an insolvency claim.
Use the administrator’s notice, the retailer’s official website and announcements from the appointed insolvency firm. A social-media post or an old customer-service answer may predate the appointment and should not be treated as the current policy.

If the voucher is refused
Keep the purchase receipt, the voucher number or electronic code, the original amount, and proof of how it was paid. Ask the card provider whether that payment method supports a claim. Eligibility depends on the actual transaction and card terms; not every gift-card purchase qualifies for the same protection. If no payment remedy is available, submit the balance as a claim to the administrator. A voucher holder in that position is commonly an unsecured creditor, and the eventual distribution can be negligible.
Preorders and orders that have not shipped
Can the retailer still deliver?
An administrator may keep the business trading, and the administrator or a buyer may decide to fulfil some or all customer orders. That is a discretionary commercial decision, not a guarantee. Orders can be cancelled when stock is unavailable, when the new business does not assume the old company’s contracts, or when fulfilling them would not serve the creditors’ interests.
Before buying a replacement item, check whether an official notice gives a revised fulfilment timetable. If the retailer has not confirmed that your order has been adopted, treat the original delivery estimate as unreliable and consider whether waiting creates a practical risk, such as a deadline for a birthday, travel or a time-limited promotion.

What evidence to preserve
- Order confirmation and order number.
- Exact item description, model, quantity and any serial or specification information.
- Price paid, taxes, delivery charge and the date of payment.
- Payment statement showing the merchant or intermediary actually charged.
- Promised delivery date and any dispatch or tracking messages.
- Your correspondence with customer service, the administrator or a delivery company.
These records support both a card-provider request and an insolvency claim. They may also help establish that a particular item, rather than merely an equivalent product, was allocated to you.

The route you used to pay is often more important than the fact that the retailer has entered administration. Explain the complete payment path to the provider instead of assuming that a familiar protection applies.

Section 75: when a credit-card claim may be possible
Citizens Advice says Section 75 may cover an eligible credit-card purchase when the relevant single item costs more than £100 and no more than £30,000. The legal requirements include a relevant debtor-creditor-supplier relationship. A checkout total containing several items is not automatically the same as one item priced within the range, and a payment routed through a marketplace or another intermediary can affect the required relationship.

When contacting the card issuer, give the item price, merchant name, date, order number, delivery promise, payment route and the fact that the retailer entered administration. Ask the issuer to assess the actual transaction rather than asking a general question about insolvency. Keep the reference number and written response. If the provider says Section 75 is unavailable, ask whether chargeback or another dispute process can be requested instead.
Chargeback: useful but not guaranteed
Chargeback is a card-scheme procedure that can sometimes be used for an eligible debit- or credit-card transaction when goods were not supplied. It is not the same as a statutory Section 75 right. The bank or card provider may reject the request, require evidence, or impose a deadline set by the applicable card scheme.

- Contact the bank or card provider as soon as you know the order will not be fulfilled or the voucher has been refused.
- Describe the payment path accurately, including any wallet, marketplace or finance intermediary.
- Provide the confirmation, statement entry, administrator’s notice and correspondence showing non-delivery or refusal.
- Ask what deadline and documents apply, then record the case number and the date of your request.
- Continue with an insolvency claim if money or goods remain owed; a card request does not remove the need to notify the administrator.
Could you already own the goods?
Payment alone does not conclusively prove that a particular unshipped item belongs to you. You might have a claim to a specific prepaid item still held by the retailer if ownership had already passed and the item can be identified as yours, but the Law Commission describes this area as legally complex.

Identification is important. An invoice for a unique serial-numbered product, a warehouse allocation record or correspondence confirming that your exact item was set aside may be more useful than a generic order confirmation. Ask the administrator whether the item is segregated, whether ownership is said to have passed, and what evidence is required to assert a proprietary claim. Do not remove stock yourself or treat a warehouse item as yours without the administrator’s agreement.
Step-by-step action plan
- Confirm the formal status. Look for the appointment notice and the name and contact details of the administrator through official company or insolvency announcements.
- Secure your records. Download invoices, receipts, voucher details, account pages, payment statements, delivery estimates and all correspondence before a website or customer portal changes.
- Read the specific policy. Find out whether the retailer is trading, which orders are being fulfilled, and whether vouchers are accepted, restricted or rejected.
- Contact the payment provider promptly. Ask about Section 75, chargeback or the relevant dispute process, and explain whether the payment went directly to the retailer or through another party.
- Register with the administrator. Submit the amount paid, the goods or voucher involved, your evidence and your contact details. Follow the stated proof-of-debt procedure.
- Raise an ownership question where appropriate. If a paid item is identifiable, ask how to make a claim for the item itself rather than only its monetary value.
- Track every deadline. Keep copies of forms, provider reference numbers and notices, and update your address or email if the administrator requests it.
Make both a payment-provider request and an insolvency claim where appropriate. They are separate routes, and neither guarantees that you will receive the goods or recover all of the money.
What recovery can you expect?
An insolvency claim does not put a customer ahead of secured creditors, preferential claims or the costs of administering the estate. The amount and timing of any distribution depend on the assets recovered, the creditor ranking and the administrator’s realisation of the business. Consumer claims can therefore receive only a small dividend or no payment. No general recovery percentage or probability of voucher acceptance has been established for retailers as a class.
Which UK guidance applies?
The Citizens Advice insolvency page cited for these steps is written for England. It directs readers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to separate guidance, where terminology and procedures can differ. Use advice for the nation in which your consumer matter is governed, and check the administrator’s own instructions for the company concerned.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming that administration means the website or stores have permanently closed, or assuming that trading automatically continues.
- Waiting for delivery without checking whether the administrator has adopted the order.
- Claiming Section 75 solely because a credit card was used, without checking the single-item price and supplier relationship.
- Treating chargeback as an automatic refund.
- Relying on a screenshot or old email while losing the original payment statement and order details.
- Submitting only an insolvency claim and missing a card-provider deadline.
- Assuming that payment proves ownership of an unshipped item that has not been identified or segregated.
