When a publisher or studio is acquired, a game in development is not automatically cancelled or guaranteed to ship. The project may continue with its existing team, move into a reorganized internal group, transfer with selected assets to another owner, change publishers, be paused, or be closed. The result depends on the transaction’s scope, contracts, funding decisions, staffing and ownership of the game’s intellectual property.
To predict a particular game’s fate, separate what the buyer announced from what ultimately happened. Check whether the deal closed, which assets and rights changed hands, whether development teams remained intact and whether platform, publishing or distribution agreements already limited the new owner’s choices.
There is no automatic outcome after an acquisition
An acquisition changes corporate ownership, not necessarily the status of every game. A buyer can keep a project on its existing schedule, redirect it, combine its developers with another team or decide that the expected return no longer justifies continued spending. A seller can also transfer only selected studios, projects or rights while retaining other parts of the business.
That is why “the studio was bought” is not enough information to answer “will the game still come out?” The answer requires at least four separate facts:

- Project status: whether the game is active, paused, cancelled, announced for release or simply unmentioned.
- Transaction scope: whether the buyer acquired the whole company, a studio, selected assets or particular rights, and whether the deal has actually closed.
- People and reporting lines: whether the developers remain together, move to another internal unit or face a restructuring.
- Rights and obligations: who owns the intellectual property, controls publishing and funding, and is bound by platform, distribution or exclusivity contracts.
There is no reliable industry-wide percentage showing how many in-development games survive an acquisition. Documented transactions demonstrate possible outcomes, not a general probability.
The main ways an in-development game can be affected
1. The existing team continues the project
A buyer may decide that preserving development momentum is more valuable than changing direction. In a September 22, 2026 Xbox Wire update, Matt Booty said Bethesda would expand its remit to include Obsidian, which “will continue its current projects, including Grounded, as well as the new Fallout project made in collaboration with Bethesda Game Studios.” That is a company-announced continuation plan under a changed reporting structure; it is not independent proof that every named project will release on a particular date.
Continuation can still involve new budgets, leadership, milestones, technology or staffing. A project that remains active may be delayed or redesigned even when the public announcement uses reassuring language.
2. Teams are reorganized or combined
Acquisition integration can change who works on a game without ending it. The same September 2026 Xbox update said Playground and Turn 10 would come together as one studio focused on Forza and Fable. This is a consolidation into a new team, distinct from leaving a studio independent or transferring a project to a new publisher. A combined structure can share technology and staff, but it can also force priorities to be renegotiated across several games.

3. A studio or project moves with selected assets
A transaction may sell only a portion of a publisher’s development portfolio. Embracer’s March 14, 2024 announcement about its divestment of Saber Interactive said the selected Saber assets included 38 ongoing game development projects, with a reported book value of about SEK 2.3 billion. Embracer also said 14 games remained in its retained pipeline, including the next AAA game from 4A Games.
Those figures describe that specific transaction. They do not mean that 38 projects normally move whenever a studio is sold, or that 14 is a standard number of games a seller keeps. A transferred project may retain the same developers, move to a different team or require a new publishing and funding plan.
4. The project gets a new publisher
A game can remain in development while its publishing relationship changes. Xbox said in September 2026 that Undead Labs had “successfully transitioned on similar terms” and, with a new publisher, would release State of Decay 3 day one on Game Pass. This describes a transition to a new publisher rather than a simple internal reorganization. The statement is evidence of the announced arrangement and intended release plan; treat the eventual launch as a separate status question.

5. Development is paused or the game is cancelled
An owner can stop funding a project after reviewing its costs, schedule, market prospects or strategic fit. The cancellation may occur during integration or much later. However, chronology matters. Embracer’s December 2021 announcement about acquiring Perfect World Entertainment said Cryptic Studios and PWE Publishing would remain independent within Gearbox Entertainment. The announcement also recorded that Cryptic’s Magic: Legends had already been cancelled in 2021, before the acquisition agreement was announced. That game should not be presented as a cancellation caused by the later buyer.

Ownership of the studio, game and rights can be split
“Who bought the studio?” is only one ownership question. The entities controlling development, intellectual property, publishing, distribution and platform access may be different.

The Metro example shows why a studio sale does not automatically transfer every franchise right. The cloud-streaming arrangement shows the opposite kind of separation: a large acquisition can close while one category of rights is assigned to another company as a regulatory remedy.
Existing contracts can limit the new owner
An acquisition does not erase contracts signed before the deal. Platform exclusivity, release windows, distribution commitments, licensing terms and cloud rights can continue to bind the buyer or the acquired business.
The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s 2023 final report on Microsoft’s proposed Activision Blizzard acquisition reviewed earlier Microsoft studio acquisitions. It said Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo had one-year PlayStation exclusivity contracts agreed before Microsoft acquired ZeniMax, and that Microsoft appeared to honor those agreements. This is evidence that a buyer may respect pre-existing obligations; it is not a guarantee that every contract in every acquisition has the same terms or outcome.

Contracts can also determine which company must fund development, deliver a build, provide support or publish in a particular territory. Public announcements rarely disclose every clause, so the absence of a contract detail in an announcement should not be treated as proof that no obligation exists.
How to evaluate a specific acquisition announcement
Use the following sequence when a game’s studio or publisher changes hands.
- Confirm the transaction’s legal scope. Identify whether the announcement covers an entire company, a named studio, selected assets, a project portfolio or a license. Then check whether the transaction is proposed, signed, awaiting approval or closed. Microsoft said its Activision Blizzard acquisition officially completed on October 13, 2023; an announcement made before that date described a pending transaction, not completed ownership.
- Locate an explicit project-status statement. Look for words such as “will continue,” “in development,” “paused,” “cancelled,” “transitioned” or “released.” If a game is not mentioned, record that as silence, not confirmation of cancellation.
- Map the people and reporting lines. Determine whether the existing studio remains intact, is being merged with another team or is moving to a new publisher. A familiar studio name alone does not establish that the same developers, leadership or budget remain.
- Identify the IP and publishing owners. Check who owns the franchise, who licenses it and who controls funding and release decisions. The Metro and Saber transaction demonstrates that these rights can remain with a different company from the development assets.
- Check platform and distribution commitments. Search for announced exclusivity periods, release windows, day-one arrangements, cloud-streaming rights and other obligations made before the acquisition. The CMA’s account of Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo illustrates why these commitments matter.
- Separate an announced plan from a completed result. Label a statement as a proposal, signed agreement, closed deal, ongoing transition, company intention or completed release. A buyer’s promise that a project will continue is meaningful evidence of intent, but it is not proof of the eventual launch.
- Recheck the date. Project status can change quickly during integration. A later cancellation, delay or platform change may supersede an earlier continuation statement.
How to interpret common reader questions
“Will the game still come out?”
Possibly, but an acquisition announcement alone cannot establish a release. A confirmed launch date, a completed release or a current platform listing is stronger evidence than a statement that development will continue. If the newest source only describes a plan, report the plan and its date.

Cancellation is one possible business decision, not an automatic consequence. Buyers may cancel projects that no longer fit their strategy, but they may also retain or reorganize them. Do not attribute a cancellation to the buyer without checking when the cancellation was announced; Magic: Legends was cancelled before the Perfect World acquisition agreement was announced.

“Does the studio keep making the game?”
It may. The studio can stay independent, continue inside a larger group or be combined with another team. Conversely, a project can transfer while the original studio loses control, or rights can stay with a publisher while developers move elsewhere.
“Can the game move to another publisher?”
Yes. Xbox’s description of Undead Labs transitioning with a new publisher for State of Decay 3 is a documented example. Whether a move is possible depends on the contracts, IP licenses and rights included in the transaction.
What the documented examples actually establish
- Xbox’s September 22, 2026 statement announced continued work on Obsidian projects, a Playground–Turn 10 consolidation focused on Forza and Fable, and a new-publisher transition for Undead Labs.
- Embracer’s March 14, 2024 Saber divestment announcement identified 38 ongoing development projects in selected assets and 14 games in its retained pipeline.
- Embracer separately stated that Metro PC and console publishing and licensing rights would remain with PLAION despite a possible option involving 4A Games and Zen Studios.
- The CMA’s 2023 report described pre-existing one-year PlayStation exclusivity contracts for Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo and said Microsoft appeared to honor them.
- Microsoft’s 2023 restructuring assigned specified Activision Blizzard cloud-streaming rights to Ubisoft for 15 years, effective at closing; Microsoft confirmed the acquisition closed on October 13, 2023.
Together, these cases show continuation, consolidation, transfer to a new publisher, retained rights, contractual constraints and rights carve-outs. They are examples of what can happen, not a statistical forecast for the next acquisition.

Bottom line for players waiting on an unreleased game
Start with the latest project-specific statement, then verify the deal’s scope, closing date, team structure, IP ownership and existing platform or publishing commitments. A buyer’s announcement can reveal intent, but only a later status update or completed release proves what happened. Until that evidence exists, describe the game as continuing, transitioning, paused or unconfirmed according to the precise wording and date of the available announcement—not as automatically safe or automatically cancelled.
