When a game leaves Xbox Game Pass, your subscription no longer grants access to play it. Downloading it does not turn the download into a permanent license. To keep playing that specific title, purchase it separately, then launch it with the account that owns the game and has the relevant save data. Xbox advertises discounts of up to 20% for members, but the offer is limited to select games, so the price shown on the current store listing is the one that matters.
Your save is a separate issue from your license. Supported games can synchronize progress through an account, but Microsoft does not promise that every game, platform, edition, or separate release will share saves. Check the title’s save behavior before buying a different edition or moving between Xbox and PC.
What changes when a Game Pass title leaves?
The subscription entitlement changes. While the title is included in your plan and available in your region and on your platform, Game Pass grants access under the service’s terms. Once the title leaves the library, that catalog access ends even if you previously installed the game.

This is a licensing change, not a statement that every installed file is immediately erased. Do not treat an existing download, a desktop shortcut, or a console tile as proof that you own the game. The service can stop recognizing the Game Pass entitlement after the removal date.
Leaving dates are not universal
Xbox says availability varies over time and by region, plan, and platform. A title shown as leaving soon in one country or plan may have a different date, or may not be available on another platform. Use the live Xbox Game Pass games catalog and its Leaving soon collection rather than relying on an old list copied into an article.
Can you still play a game after it leaves?
Not through the Game Pass catalog entitlement. The practical way to continue with that particular game is to buy it from the applicable Xbox or Microsoft store listing. Xbox’s catalog page tells members, “To keep playing, buy now and save up to 20% with your member discount.” The wording is a maximum and applies only where the title is eligible; it is not a guarantee that every departing game receives a 20% reduction.

How to keep playing: a safe step-by-step process
- Open the live catalog. Go to Browse Xbox Game Pass Games and check the title’s Leaving soon status. Note the displayed departure date for your region, plan, and platform.
- Open the game’s store page. Confirm the exact edition and platform. Deluxe, cross-generation, PC, console, and cloud versions can have different entitlements or save compatibility.
- Check the member price. If the listing shows a Game Pass discount, compare the displayed price with the regular price. Xbox describes the benefit as “up to 20%” and the PC plan page qualifies it as applying to select games, so do not assume a discount is present.
- Confirm the account. Buy with the Microsoft/Xbox account that you use for the game and that contains your existing progress. A purchase on another account can leave your saves and license associated with different identities.
- Let the current session sync. Before the removal date, close the game normally while connected to the service so any supported cloud-save data has an opportunity to upload. If the game has a manual save or sync command, use it.
- Purchase and install the compatible version. After purchase, install or update the version shown in your library. Do not assume that a different platform, edition, or separately released remaster reads the same save.
- Launch and verify progress. Start the purchased copy with the same account. If the expected save is missing, stop creating new saves until you check account, platform, edition, and synchronization status.
Do you lose your save when a game leaves Game Pass?
Leaving the catalog ends the subscription’s play entitlement; it does not by itself answer what happens to your progress. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation describes account association and save roaming for supported Xbox game scenarios, but it does not establish that every title supports cloud saves or that saves move between every platform, edition, or separate release. Use this distinction:
- License: whether your account is allowed to launch the game through Game Pass or a purchase.
- Save data: the progress associated with your account, device, platform, or the game’s own save system.
A supported cloud save can make a purchase transition straightforward, but “supported” is the important qualification. Compatibility may fail when you switch from Xbox console to PC, choose a different edition, move to a release with a separate product ID, or use a game that stores progress locally or under different rules.
Before the title leaves
- Connect the console or PC to the service and play until your latest progress is saved.
- Exit through the game’s normal menu instead of abruptly shutting down while a save is in progress.
- Check that the account shown in the game and Xbox app is the one you will use for the purchase.
- Record the platform and edition you are playing so you can match them when buying.
- If the game offers its own backup, export, or account-linking option, follow that title’s official instructions.
If the save is missing after purchase
- Close the game on every device and sign in again to the original account.
- Confirm that the purchased edition is for the same platform and product family as the Game Pass version.
- Allow the service to finish synchronizing before starting a new game.
- Check the game publisher’s support documentation for title-specific save locations and cross-save limits.
- Do not delete local data or overwrite a cloud save while troubleshooting unless the title’s support instructions tell you to.
A concrete example: The Elder Scrolls Online
Bethesda Support addresses a specific case for The Elder Scrolls Online: if a Game Pass subscription lapses or the game is no longer in the library, a player can purchase the game and pick up where they left off. Use the example as a model for what to look for: a title-specific statement about account data and the exact product you plan to buy. Do not infer from one game that all saves transfer between console, PC, cloud, standard, deluxe, or separately released versions.

The catalog page promotes savings of up to 20% when members buy games they want to keep. “Up to” means the percentage is a ceiling, not a standard rate. The PC Game Pass page separately says discounts apply to select games. Eligibility can therefore differ by title, plan, platform, region, and the current store offer.

Check the specific game’s official store and support terms before assuming an add-on will remain usable with a purchased base game or will transfer between platforms.

Assuming an installed game is yours forever
Installation and ownership are different. Game Pass access lasts only while the subscription is active and the title remains in the library. Buy the game if you need continuing access.
Waiting until the last minute
Removal dates and offers are time-sensitive. A purchase made after the title leaves may show a different price or edition, and a save that has not synchronized may be harder to recover. Check the Leaving soon entry early.

The member offer is title-dependent. Look at the current listing for the exact amount, currency, region, and platform.
Copying a catalog list from an old article
Xbox says availability changes by time, region, plan, and platform. Use the live catalog instead of a static list.
What to check before deciding whether to buy
- How often you play: A frequently played title may justify a purchase; an occasional game may not.
- Departure timing: Compare the displayed Leaving soon date with your planned play sessions.
