When your PlayStation Plus subscription ends, you lose access to Game Catalog games you downloaded through the subscription. Installing a game does not make it a permanent purchase. Canceling renewal does not usually end access immediately: Sony says benefits continue through the end of the subscription period you have already paid for. A game can also become unavailable sooner if Sony removes it from the catalog while your membership is still active.
What happens to a downloaded Game Catalog game?
A Game Catalog download is a subscription entitlement, not a license you own indefinitely. While you have an active membership tier that includes the catalog, and the game remains in that catalog, you can access it. When either condition stops being true—your qualifying membership ends or the title leaves the service—you cannot keep playing it just because its files remain installed on your console.
Sony describes the Game Catalog as a benefit available to members of the corresponding membership plan. It also notes that some games have an end date and will be removed from PlayStation Plus. Check the current PlayStation Plus game catalog for a specific title; availability can vary by region and can change over time.

Cancellation is not the same as subscription expiry
Turning off automatic renewal does not itself remove your benefits. Sony says they continue until the end of the already-purchased subscription period. Your practical cutoff is therefore the paid-through date shown in your account, not necessarily the day you cancel.
- Open your PlayStation account’s subscription settings and check the end date for your current PlayStation Plus plan.
- If you cancel renewal, note that date. You can continue using eligible benefits through the remaining paid period.
- When that period ends, access to subscription games and other Plus benefits ends unless you have renewed or subscribed again.
Sony’s U.K. cancellation guidance says that after a subscription ends, members lose access to benefits including monthly games, online storage and online multiplayer. The precise date for your account is not established by a general support page; use the date shown in your own subscription settings. See Sony’s cancellation guidance.
That distinction matters if you cancel well before the next billing date: cancellation stops future renewal, while expiry is when the current paid period runs out. Do not assume that selecting cancel immediately locks the games, but do not assume you will retain them after the paid-through date either. Sony’s guidance describes benefits continuing to the end of the period already purchased.
How monthly games, catalog games and purchases differ
“PlayStation Plus games” can mean different things. The important distinction is how each game was added to your account. A download included with a membership is not treated the same as a game you paid for.

Sony’s U.S. games page says monthly games can be added to a library and played while the member has an active plan. It separately explains that catalog access is for members of the corresponding plan. Sony’s cancellation guidance distinguishes subscription downloads from discounted purchases, which remain yours. Sony’s U.S. PlayStation Plus games page puts the monthly-game condition this way: “You can add the monthly games to your game library to download and play at any time as long as you have an active membership plan.” That is why a game sitting in your library is not proof that it remains playable without a membership. By contrast, a game you bought—even at a Plus discount—is a purchase, and Sony says discounted purchases remain yours after the subscription ends.

Keep the categories separate when checking a locked title. A monthly game was claimed as a membership benefit; a Game Catalog game is available through a qualifying catalog tier and may rotate out; a purchased game has a separate purchase entitlement. Their presence in the same library does not make their access rules identical.

Why a game can stop working before your paid period ends
Your membership end date is not the only date that matters. Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles rotate, and Sony says some have a published removal date. If a game leaves while your membership is active, catalog access can end on that removal date. A current subscription does not guarantee continued access to every title that was once included.
For a game you are partway through, check its listing in the catalog for an announced end date rather than relying on the date your subscription renews. Sony says removal dates are publicized ahead of time, but its general guidance does not promise a particular title will remain available through any individual player’s subscription period. The catalog page for your region is the best place to check current availability.
This creates two independent dates to watch: your membership’s paid-through date and a title’s catalog end date. If the title is removed first, an active membership does not override that removal. If the game remains listed but your paid period ends, the membership entitlement is the issue instead. Check the local catalog for the particular game rather than assuming that a listing or end date from another region applies to you.
What happens to DLC and add-ons?
Buying downloadable content for a catalog game does not buy the base game. Sony says DLC or add-ons bought for a downloaded catalog title cannot be used if your membership expires or if the game leaves the service. Access can return if you resubscribe or buy the base game. This means an add-on purchase alone does not preserve the right to launch the subscription version of the game.

The same base-game dependency applies whether access ends because your subscription expires or because Sony removes the title from the catalog. The add-on is not a substitute for the game it extends. If you later restore access by resubscribing or buying the base game, Sony says the DLC can be used again.
Which PlayStation Plus tier includes the catalog?
Catalog access depends on the membership plan, not simply on having any PlayStation Plus subscription. Sony says Extra includes Game Catalog access, while Premium includes the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Essential is not listed as providing Game Catalog access in Sony’s plan distinction. Plan names, benefits and the local catalog should be checked for your region because the official pages cited here are U.S. and U.K. pages.
If you renew at a different tier, verify that it includes the specific catalog you want. A membership that restores monthly-game access is not necessarily the tier needed for a Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title. Because Sony’s plan names and benefits can differ by region, check the local plan details and catalog before renewing or changing tiers for a particular game.
What to check if a game appears locked
A lock or unavailable game does not by itself tell you whether the problem is your subscription, the title’s catalog status or a separate purchase. Check the entitlement before deleting and reinstalling the game; an installed copy cannot substitute for an active license.
- Check your paid-through date. If you canceled renewal but the date has not passed, Sony’s guidance says benefits continue through the paid period.
- Confirm the game’s source. Determine whether you claimed it as a monthly game, downloaded it from a catalog, or purchased it. A discounted purchase is retained; a subscription download is conditional.
- Check the current regional catalog. The title may have left the service, even if your membership remains active.
- Check the tier. Confirm that your current plan includes the relevant Game Catalog or Classics Catalog access.
- For DLC, check the base game entitlement. Add-ons for a catalog title do not preserve access to its base game when the game or membership entitlement is gone.
If those checks do not explain the status, consult PlayStation support for your account and region. The public guidance explains general access rules but cannot determine an individual account’s exact entitlement state.

It can help to write down the answer to three questions before troubleshooting further: Is the current paid period over? Is the title still listed in your local catalog? Was it downloaded as a subscription benefit or bought separately? Those checks address the access rules Sony describes and can help distinguish a subscription issue from a removed title or a purchase that should remain yours.

Decide what to do before access ends
If you are nearing expiry, use this short decision process:
- Identify games you want to keep playing. Separate subscription downloads from games you bought.
- Check the two relevant dates. Review your subscription end date and any catalog removal date announced for each title.
- Choose the right entitlement. Renew or resubscribe at a tier that includes the catalog, or purchase the game if you want an independent purchase entitlement and it is available for sale.
- Review add-ons separately. If you own DLC for a catalog game, make sure you will retain access to the base game through a qualifying subscription or purchase.
There is no general promise that a downloaded catalog title will remain playable after a membership ends, and there is no one date that applies to every game. Your account’s paid-through date, the game’s status in the regional catalog, and the way you obtained the game determine what happens.

Can I play downloaded PS Plus Extra games after canceling?
