A furniture retailer’s closure does not automatically cancel every warranty connected to your purchase. The result depends on who made the promise: the retailer, the furniture manufacturer, or a separate protection-plan company. A store-only warranty or return promise may be difficult to enforce once the business stops operating. A manufacturer’s written warranty can generally still be claimed from the manufacturer if it is in force and the defect fits its terms. A separately purchased service contract follows its own provider and contract rules, not simply the fate of the store that sold it.
This is general U.S. consumer information. Your state, purchase documents, warranty language, provider status and any bankruptcy case can change the route and the remedy.
Start by identifying who actually promised coverage
The store name on a receipt is not enough to determine responsibility. Find the warranty certificate, owner’s manual, invoice, delivery paperwork and any separately purchased protection-plan contract. Look for labels such as “warrantor,” “manufacturer,” “seller,” “administrator,” “service-contract provider” or “obligor.” The named entity and its claim instructions control your first contact.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that warranty documents state the coverage period, what is covered and how to make a claim. Keep the warranty and receipt together: the receipt helps prove the purchase date and original ownership.

Manufacturer warranty
A manufacturer is responsible for a written warranty it issued, subject to that warranty’s terms. The retailer’s closure does not by itself erase the manufacturer’s separate promise. Contact the manufacturer through the address, telephone number or website printed in the warranty, and ask whether it still supports the model and what evidence it needs.
Do not assume that a manufacturer accepted a promise made only by the retailer. If the document names only the store as warrantor, the manufacturer may have no obligation under that particular promise, although other state-law rights or a separate manufacturer warranty could still apply.
Retailer-only warranty or return policy
A store may have promised a repair, replacement, refund or limited return period independently of the manufacturer. Once the retailer closes, there may be no operating claims department to perform that promise. Check whether another company acquired the business, whether the store announced a claims address, and whether a court case exists. A consumer-protection office or lawyer can help interpret available state-law remedies, but neither automatically guarantees payment.

Protection plan or service contract
An “extended warranty” is usually a service contract purchased separately from the product. It is not the same as coverage that came with the furniture. The contract should identify the responsible provider or administrator, covered failures, exclusions, labor or transportation limits, deductibles and the claims process.

Washington State consumer guidance says a third-party-backed service and repair contract is not ordinarily affected merely because the retail store closes. That does not protect a plan whose own provider has failed, nor does it override a requirement in your contract to use a particular repair network or return to the store. Check the plan company’s current status and follow its instructions.
What to do immediately after discovering the closure
- Assemble your records. Gather the itemized receipt, warranty certificate, model or serial number, delivery and installation records, photographs of the defect, payment statement and any protection-plan contract. Scan the documents so you can send copies while retaining the originals.
- Mark each responsible entity. On a copy of the paperwork, identify the manufacturer, retailer, service-contract provider and administrator. Record every telephone number, email address and claims address printed in the documents.
- Read the operative terms. Note the start and end dates, defect definition, exclusions, maintenance requirements, inspection rules, labor or transport limits, deductibles and any requirement to return the furniture to the store. A defect can be outside coverage even when a warranty is still within its dates.
- Contact the named company in writing. Describe the furniture, purchase date, defect, date you noticed it and remedy requested. Attach legible copies, not irreplaceable originals. Ask for a claim number and written instructions. Keep a call log with dates, names and promised follow-up.
- Escalate a product-warranty problem to the manufacturer. FTC consumer guidance states: “If you have a problem with a product contact the seller.” It also says: “If the seller doesn’t resolve the problem, write to the manufacturer.” If the store is closed, send the letter to the manufacturer address in the warranty and explain that the seller is no longer operating. Certified mail with a return receipt can document delivery when that proof is useful.
- Check for a formal insolvency case. A closure is not necessarily a bankruptcy. If the retailer filed, locate the actual court case, case number, claims agent and deadline. Follow that case’s instructions rather than relying on a general deadline from another state.
- Use public complaint channels when appropriate. If the responsible company does not respond, consider a complaint to the FTC and your state attorney general or consumer-protection office. Those agencies may identify patterns or contact a business, but filing a complaint does not itself establish a right to a repair, replacement or refund.
How federal and state warranty rules fit together
Written warranties and the Magnuson-Moss framework
The FTC’s business guidance describes the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act as governing written warranties on consumer products. The Act does not require a business to offer a written warranty. When one exists, the party that actually made the written warranty is central to responsibility, and the document’s coverage and claim procedure matter. State law can add rights or affect available remedies.
Implied warranties
Even without a written warranty, state law may create implied warranties. The implied warranty of merchantability generally concerns whether goods meet ordinary expectations; an implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose can arise when a seller knows the buyer’s special purpose and the buyer relies on the seller’s judgment. Disclaimers, duration and enforcement differ by state and by the wording of the sale documents.

That is not a universal duration and is not a promise that furniture must last four years. The FTC business guide’s discussion of a general four-year limitations period concerns claims about problems present when the product was sold; it does not guarantee a four-year useful life. Obtain state-specific advice before relying on either figure.

Service contracts are separate agreements
A service contract may cover mechanical failure, accidental damage or particular repair services that a product warranty excludes. It may also impose waiting periods, authorization requirements, service fees, maximum payouts or a repair-first remedy. The store’s closure does not rewrite those terms. The decisive questions are whether the named provider remains in business, whether the failure is covered and whether you used the contract’s required claim channel.
What bankruptcy changes
Retail closure and bankruptcy are different events. If a retailer has filed bankruptcy, customer claims are handled under that case’s procedures and creditor priorities. North Carolina Department of Justice guidance explains that a consumer may file a claim, but bankruptcy law determines which creditors are paid and how much; filing does not guarantee recovery.
Verify the court, case number, claims administrator and deadline in the actual proceeding. A proof of claim should describe the purchase, amount sought and supporting documents as the court requires. Do not send original receipts unless the case instructions specifically demand them. A bankruptcy professional or lawyer can explain priority, secured claims and whether another entity assumed obligations.
Choosing the right route for common situations
The furniture has a manufacturing defect and the manufacturer is named
Open a claim with the manufacturer. Provide the model identifier, proof of purchase, warranty page and photographs. Ask whether the remedy is inspection, parts, repair, replacement or reimbursement and whether the manufacturer pays freight or labor. If the manufacturer denies coverage, request the denial and the specific exclusion in writing.

The document names only the closed store
Search the retailer’s closure notice, successor information and any bankruptcy filing. Send a written demand to the last official address shown in your records and retain proof of delivery. Then contact your state consumer-protection office or counsel about contract, implied-warranty and bankruptcy options. Do not represent a retailer-only promise as a manufacturer warranty.
You bought an extended plan at checkout
Read the contract’s first page and definitions to find the obligor or administrator. Contact that company, not merely the furniture manufacturer, and ask whether the original store is required for authorization. Confirm claim limits, deductibles, transportation, replacement-value rules and expiration dates before paying for an outside repair that might not be reimbursed.
The paperwork conflicts
Send the same concise written description to each potentially responsible company. Ask each to identify whether it is the warrantor, seller, administrator or repair contractor and to state the reason for any denial. A written record prevents a phone representative’s informal statement from becoming your only evidence.
Evidence that makes a claim easier to evaluate
- Receipt showing seller, purchase date, price and item description
- Warranty certificate and pages stating exclusions and claim instructions
- Protection-plan contract, enrollment confirmation and payment record
- Model, serial or product code and delivery date
- Photos or video showing the defect, including surrounding conditions
- Maintenance records and evidence that required assembly or care instructions were followed
- Copies of letters, emails, claim numbers, call notes and delivery confirmations
Describe symptoms precisely rather than diagnosing the cause. For example, state that a drawer detaches under ordinary use on a specific date, rather than asserting a hidden manufacturing defect unless an inspection established it. Avoid discarding the item or authorizing permanent alterations before the provider gives instructions; doing so can complicate inspection and causation questions.

Limits of general online guidance
The outcome cannot be determined without the retailer, state, manufacturer, furniture model, purchase date and contract language. State disclaimers and filing periods vary. A retailer may close without bankruptcy, a manufacturer may discontinue a model while continuing warranty service, and a service-plan administrator may change its claims address. Recheck the responsible company’s status and the written instructions when you file.
The FTC consumer pages used for this guidance are dated March and July 2023, while state guidance is general rather than a ruling on an individual claim. No reliable statistic establishes what percentage of furniture warranties are honored after a retailer closes. Treat any prediction of a likely refund or repair as uncertain until the responsible provider accepts the claim in writing.
A concise decision rule
Follow the promise, not the storefront: manufacturer warranty claims go to the manufacturer; retailer-only promises require successor, state-law or bankruptcy avenues; and separately purchased plans go to their named provider. Preserve proof, follow the written process and escalate in writing when the first contact fails.
