When a bull market ends, full-time traders lose the broad upward drift that can make long-biased strategies look dependable. Reversals, failed breakouts, gaps and volatility increase while rent, taxes, commissions, data subscriptions and platform costs continue. Leverage can turn ordinary losing days into margin pressure.
Some traders adapt, some reduce withdrawals or find other income, and many leave. The available evidence does not show that most full-time traders smoothly transition into a new regime. Persistent profitability after all fees is rare, and surviving longer does not by itself prove that skill has improved.
Why the end of a bull market is such a difficult transition
The directional tailwind disappears
A long-only trader can be profitable during a rising market even when entries are imperfect: pullbacks may recover, breakouts may continue and holding periods can be extended. That tailwind is not the same as a repeatable trading skill. When the market turns, the trader must earn returns from timing, selection and risk control rather than from direction alone.

The change is especially severe for strategies that buy breakouts, add to winners or keep positions open until momentum resumes. A failed breakout can reverse through the entry price quickly. A second attempt may fail as well, creating a sequence of small losses that becomes large when position size remains calibrated for the old regime.

Volatility changes execution, not just chart patterns
Bear markets and crash periods can produce larger intraday ranges, overnight gaps and rapid reversals. A stop order may execute farther from its planned level, and a position that looked modest at entry can become much larger relative to the trader’s account after a gap. Correlations can also change, so several supposedly different positions may lose together.
These conditions make a strategy’s actual distribution of wins, losses and slippage different from the distribution used to set size during a calm bull market. A trader must determine whether the deterioration is a temporary drawdown or evidence that the setup’s assumptions no longer hold.
Fixed expenses become a larger percentage of gross returns
Trading businesses carry costs whether the month is profitable or not. They can include commissions, bid-ask spreads, stock-borrow charges for short positions, market-data subscriptions, software and platform fees, taxes and ordinary living expenses. The Securities and Exchange Commission warned in 1999 that “Day traders invariably generate hefty commissions and often pay fees for computer and other electronic services.” It added that traders therefore “need to make significant profits simply to cover the costs of their trades.”

Leverage converts a drawdown into a solvency problem
Margin magnifies both gains and losses. A normal losing sequence can force a trader to cut positions at the worst time or meet a broker’s margin requirements. The SEC’s 1999 and 2000 examinations identified margin, lending disclosure, short selling, capital and supervision as recurring concerns around day-trading operations. The practical implication is simple: leverage and maximum drawdown determine whether a trader gets time to adapt.

What the available studies say about trader survival and profitability
No single current worldwide survival rate describes full-time traders after a bull market. The studies below cover different countries, instruments, periods, definitions and fee assumptions. They are useful for setting expectations, not for calculating the odds for one individual account.
| Study or evidence | Finding | What it means for a regime change |
|---|---|---|
| Barber, Lee, Liu and Odean, 2014, Taiwanese day traders | Fewer than 1% could predictably and reliably earn positive abnormal returns net of fees. The top 500 ranked traders earned 37.9 basis points per day after fees in the following year; the bottom-ranked group lost 28.9 basis points per day. | A bull-market record is not proof of a durable, fee-adjusted edge. Results are highly uneven among traders. |
| Financial Analysts Journal study record, 2003 | At least 64% of day traders lost money, and about twice as many lost as made money. Profitability was positively related to Nasdaq movements. | Market direction can influence apparent success, and losses are common even before a major change in regime. |
| Learning by Aspiring Professional Traders, 2016 | Many aspiring futures traders exited rapidly. Among survivors, there was no evidence that risk-adjusted performance improved over time. | Remaining in the market longer does not automatically create better skill or risk-adjusted returns. |
| Ma, Fraser-Mackenzie, Sung, Kansara and Johnson, 2022, spread traders | About 25% achieved positive average returns per trade. | Positive results are possible for a minority, but the majority in this sample did not achieve positive average returns per trade. |
| Opening-range-breakout backtest, 2016–2023 data, Zarattini and Aziz, 2023/2025 revision | The specified strategy outperformed passive QQQ during two bear markets under stated leverage assumptions. | This is historical, model-dependent evidence for one strategy design, not proof that full-time trading is a dependable occupation. |
The pattern across these sources is more cautious than the popular story that skilled traders simply switch from buying to shorting when prices fall. A small group may have a robust process, but aggregate evidence points to selective survival and substantial attrition.
What changes in a full-time trader’s finances
Withdrawals become a risk decision
A trader whose household budget depended on steady monthly withdrawals may face a choice between taking money from a shrinking account and reducing personal spending. Lower withdrawals preserve capital, but they may not cover rent, taxes or health and family obligations. A larger cash reserve or another source of income can provide time to test whether the strategy still works; neither option creates a trading edge.
Separating the trading account from the household account makes the decision visible. The trader can set a maximum withdrawal policy, record every operating cost and avoid treating unrealized gains from the previous bull market as available income.
Capital can fall faster than expenses
Losses reduce the capital base that generates future returns, while data, platform and living costs often remain unchanged. If a trader responds by increasing leverage to restore the old income level, the account becomes more vulnerable to forced liquidation. Cutting size may make the business temporarily unable to support the household, but it can preserve the option to continue.

Taxes and records still matter in losing periods
Taxes, transaction records and broker statements do not disappear when performance deteriorates. A trader should track gross profit, commissions, spreads, borrow charges and financing separately so that a favorable pre-cost result is not mistaken for spendable income.
How a trader’s setups typically fail after the turn
Breakouts produce false starts
In a persistent uptrend, a breakout can attract follow-through. In a choppier or falling market, the same signal may reverse quickly. Repeated entries increase commissions and slippage while reducing the average payoff per trade.
Overnight exposure creates gap risk
A position held through the close can open materially above or below its planned exit. The trader cannot assume that a stop level will be available during a gap. Reducing overnight exposure, using smaller positions or requiring a larger margin of safety are process choices, not guarantees.
Correlations can rise during stress
Several instruments that appeared diversified in a bull market may respond to the same risk-off impulse. Counting positions is therefore not the same as measuring portfolio risk.
Short selling introduces its own costs and constraints
Bear-market participation often involves short positions, but borrow availability and charges, execution quality and the possibility of rapid squeezes affect the result. A trader should not assume that reversing a long strategy produces an equivalent short strategy.

A process for deciding whether to continue
The following sequence is designed to protect decision quality while a trader determines whether an edge survived the regime change.
- Freeze risk expansion. Do not increase leverage or position size to recover losses. Set a maximum account drawdown and a daily loss limit in advance.
- Rebuild the performance record. Reconcile fills, commissions, spreads, borrow charges, data fees and platform costs. Measure results after all costs rather than relying on a chart or gross profit figure.
- Classify every setup. Mark whether it depends on a rising market, high momentum, mean reversion, short selling, overnight holding or a particular liquidity condition.
- Reduce exposure while testing. Use smaller size or simulated execution until the strategy’s behavior is understood in the new conditions. This limits the cost of being wrong about the regime.
- Check execution assumptions. Compare expected and actual entry prices, exits, slippage, partial fills and gap outcomes. A backtest that ignores these details can overstate the edge.
- Use an independent sample. Evaluate trades that were not used to design or tune the rules. A strategy that works only on the historical period that inspired it is not validated.
- Protect household cash. Decide how much of the trading account can be used for living expenses and when another income source is required. Do not let a withdrawal deadline force an oversized trade.
- Set a review and exit rule. Define the conditions under which the strategy is paused, redesigned or abandoned. Continuing indefinitely because of time already invested is not risk management.
Comparing a fragile process with a more resilient one
No approach is guaranteed to survive a bear market. These questions expose where a trader is most dependent on the old bull-market environment.
| Decision axis | Questions that reveal vulnerability | Questions that support resilience |
|---|---|---|
| Market direction | Does the plan require broad indexes to rise? | Has the edge been demonstrated in rising, falling and sideways periods? |
| Leverage and drawdown | Could a normal loss sequence trigger a margin call? | Is size tied to a predefined maximum drawdown rather than a target income? |
| Liquidity and execution | Do spreads, slippage or borrow fees erase the average trade? | Are all-in costs measured from actual fills? |
| Holding period | Can an overnight gap exceed the planned stop? | Are overnight and intraday risks measured separately? |
| Diversification | Are several positions exposed to the same risk factor? | Do instruments and setups have genuinely different drivers? |
| Cash runway | Must the account fund essential bills every month? | Can the trader reduce withdrawals while the edge is tested? |
| Validation | Are results based only on an in-sample bull market? | Do out-of-sample results remain positive after every fee? |
How to distinguish a drawdown from a broken edge
Signs consistent with a drawdown
- After-cost expectancy remains positive over a sufficiently large, independently observed sample.
- Losses remain within the strategy’s previously observed range after allowing for realistic slippage.
- The setup still works when tested across more than one market condition, even if its size and frequency change.
Signs that the edge may be broken
- Costs, borrow charges or execution losses consume the entire gross expectancy.
- Failures occur across multiple independent samples rather than in one short cluster.
- The strategy depends on a directional or liquidity condition that is no longer present.
- Position size must be increased simply to meet household withdrawals.
There is no universal number of trades that proves a strategy is alive or dead. The sample must be large enough for the strategy’s holding period and variability, and the review must account for changing spreads, liquidity and market structure.
Can someone still make a living day trading in a bear market?
Yes, an individual can remain profitable, but the answer is not a general assurance. Profitability depends on a positive after-cost edge, adequate capital, controlled leverage, reliable execution and enough cash outside the account to avoid forced withdrawals. The studies above indicate that these conditions are achieved by a minority, not by full-time traders as a group.

A trader who specializes in short-term reversals, volatility or relative-value relationships may behave differently from a long-only breakout trader. That distinction is strategy-specific. A historical backtest of an opening-range-breakout design using 2016–2023 data reported outperformance versus passive QQQ during two bear markets under its stated leverage assumptions, but the result cannot establish what a particular person will earn after live costs, taxes, execution differences and psychological pressure.

What happens to traders during a market crash?
During a crash, losses and operational demands arrive at the same time. Gaps can bypass planned exits, several positions can correlate, margin can tighten and trading costs can rise relative to the expected move. A trader may reduce positions, stop holding overnight, pause the strategy or exit the business. Those choices are not proof of incompetence: capital needs, health, family obligations and risk tolerance differ.
What matters is whether the trader made the decision before an unavoidable margin event. A written loss limit, verified cash reserve, realistic cost model and independent performance review provide options. Without them, the market can make the decision through forced liquidation.
The practical bottom line for a full-time trader
The end of a bull market exposes how much of a trader’s income came from market direction rather than repeatable skill. Most traders should expect more variable income, more failed setups and a higher cost of being leveraged. Some can adapt by reducing size, changing or pausing strategies and protecting cash outside the account. Many will leave, and the evidence does not show that simply staying longer improves risk-adjusted performance.
