Changing the Windows sign-in and changing a Microsoft Edge profile are separate actions. A different Windows user account normally opens a different local Edge data location, while an Edge profile remains an Edge-managed container that can be created, switched, or removed independently. Microsoft does not promise that unsynchronized favorites, passwords, history, extensions, or settings will move automatically between Windows accounts.
If the same account was signed in to Edge and the needed sync categories were enabled, sign in to Edge with that account on the new Windows profile and verify what returns. Before deleting the old Windows account or removing an Edge profile, check sync and preserve anything stored only on the device.
First identify which sign-in changed
“Changing the Windows sign-in” can describe several different operations. The result depends on which one you performed:

Microsoft describes Edge profiles and their controls in Sign in and create multiple profiles in Microsoft Edge. A Windows identity can make Edge sign-in more convenient, but that convenience does not turn a Windows account into an Edge profile. Why a new Windows account can look like a new Edge installation
Edge stores user data below the current Windows user’s local application-data path. Microsoft documents the variables and location in Create Microsoft Edge user data directory variables. Because each Windows user ordinarily has a separate local data area, a new Windows account should be approached as a separate local Edge environment.
That does not establish that Edge has deleted the old profile, nor does it guarantee that the old files will be copied into the new account. It means the new account may start with its own profile list and its own local cache, history, favorites, settings, extensions, and other device-stored information. Microsoft does not promise automatic migration of unsynchronized data between Windows accounts.
Keep the old Windows account accessible until you have checked the new account. If you delete the old account first, you may lose the easiest route to local-only information that was never synchronized.
What Edge Sync can bring to the new account
Sync is conditional, not a blanket backup. Microsoft lists supported categories that can include favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill information, and payment information. Availability depends on the Edge account and the individual sync controls you selected. The current sign-in and sync guidance is in Sign in to sync Microsoft Edge across devices.

Check the old profile before changing Windows accounts
- Sign in to the old Windows account while it is still available.
- Open Edge and use Settings and more (the three-dot menu) > Settings > Profiles to identify the profile that contains your data.
- Open the profile’s Sync controls and review each category. Do not assume that seeing an account name means every category is enabled.
- Preserve important local-only information before removing the profile or Windows account. Use Edge’s built-in export or save controls for information you cannot afford to lose, and keep the old account until you have verified the result.
Set up Edge in the new Windows account
- Sign in to the new Windows account and open Edge.
- Check the profile selector. If the expected profile is not listed, create or add a profile from the profile menu.
- Sign in to Edge with the same account used by the old profile.
- Open Settings and more > Settings > Profiles > Sync, then confirm the categories you need are enabled.
- Allow synchronization to complete, then check representative items such as a favorite, a saved password, history, an extension, and an open tab. A successful account sign-in alone does not prove that every category was synchronized.
If the old profile used a different Edge account, signing in with the new account will not retrieve that other account’s synchronized data. Microsoft also states that Microsoft accounts cannot simply be combined into one account; see Combining Microsoft accounts for the account-management limits.
Local data, synced data, and profile deletion are different things
Local data
Local data exists in the Edge profile on the device. It can include browsing history, favorites, form-fill information, passwords, extensions, settings, and other profile content. If it was never synchronized or exported, changing Windows users may leave it behind in the old Windows user’s data area.
Synced data
Synced data is associated with the Edge account and the categories enabled for that profile. It can be downloaded when you sign in to the same account elsewhere, subject to the account, settings, and any organizational restrictions.

Removing a profile
Removing a profile is an explicit Edge operation, not a side effect that should be assumed from changing Windows sign-in. Microsoft’s privacy documentation states:

“Removing the profile from Microsoft Edge settings permanently deletes browsing data for the specific profile stored on the device, such as browsing history, favorites, form fill data, and passwords.”
Read Microsoft’s full explanation in User data and privacy in Microsoft Edge. The practical rule is to treat profile removal as destructive for local data. A synchronized copy may still exist online, but anything that never reached sync should not be expected to return.
Clearing data while sync is active
Deleting history or other synchronized information can affect every device using that sync account. Microsoft warns about this in its sync guidance and in View and delete browser history in Microsoft Edge. Before clearing anything, determine whether the command is limited to the current device or is being applied to synchronized data.

Work and school accounts need an additional check
Organizations can configure Edge identity, require a work profile, or enforce compliance conditions. Adding a work account to Windows does not necessarily convert a personal Edge profile into the organization’s profile. Conversely, an organization may require you to sign in to a designated work profile before corporate resources become available.

If Edge reports that the account or device is not compliant, follow the organization’s enrollment or remediation process rather than repeatedly deleting and recreating profiles. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance is Troubleshooting compliance error messages for a work or school account. Keep personal and work data in the profiles intended for them, because policy can control what is allowed in a managed profile.

“My old Edge profile is not listed”
Confirm that you are in the expected Windows account. A profile list is local to the Edge data environment you opened, so a different Windows user may show a different list. If the old account is still accessible, open Edge there and verify the profile name and Edge account before attempting recovery through sync.
“My favorites or passwords are missing”
Sign in to the same Edge account used by the old profile and inspect the individual sync toggles. If a category was disabled, or the information existed only locally, it may not be available in the new Windows account. Return to the old account and preserve the information before deleting anything.

“The profile came back, but some items did not”
Sync categories can be enabled independently. Check favorites, passwords, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill, and payment information separately rather than treating the profile’s appearance as proof that all data has arrived.

“Deleting history removed it elsewhere”
Stop making further deletions and check the other devices signed in to the same Edge account. A deletion performed while sync is active can propagate. Use the history and sync guidance from Microsoft before changing additional settings.
“Edge shows a work or school compliance message”
Use the organization’s required account and profile, and complete the compliance steps described by your administrator. Creating a personal profile will not necessarily bypass a policy applied to a managed account or device.
A safe order of operations
- Write down which Windows account, Edge profile, and Edge account currently contain the information you need.
- On the old profile, review the sync categories and wait for synchronization to finish.
- Export or otherwise preserve information that is important and local-only.
- Open Edge under the new Windows account and verify the profile list.
- Sign in with the same Edge account and check the sync controls.
- Verify actual items, not just the account name: open a favorite, inspect a saved password, check history, and confirm any required extensions or settings.
- Only after verification should you remove an old Edge profile or delete the old Windows account.
This sequence separates three decisions that are often confused: changing Windows identity, changing the Edge profile, and deleting browser data. Keeping them separate is the best protection against losing information that was stored only on the old device profile.
