Your duplicate cards do not automatically disappear when Pokémon TCG Pocket adds a new set. The official gameplay, trading and collecting guidance does not describe an automatic deletion, conversion into new-set currency, or collection reset. Your existing copies remain in My Cards unless you deliberately use an eligible feature such as flair, trading or sharing.
A new expansion is treated as a separate pool. Its expansion code identifies the cards and its pack points stay attached to that expansion. The one automatic reset documented at launch concerns favorited booster packs, which is a preference change rather than a change to card ownership.
What changes when a new expansion launches
Pokémon TCG Pocket separates each release into an expansion with its own identity. The Gameplay FAQ uses codes such as A1, A1a and A2. That identity matters for both collecting and spending resources: a card from an older expansion is not silently folded into the new expansion’s economy.

Expansion codes let the game distinguish cards and pack-related resources from different releases. When you open packs, check your collection or use a card in a transfer feature, the relevant expansion can matter even when similar cards appear in more than one release.

Pack points remain tied to the expansion that earned them
Pack points are not a single, game-wide balance. Points earned by opening packs from one expansion can be exchanged only for cards that appear in that same expansion. They do not become a universal balance when a new set arrives, and points from an older set cannot be redirected to buy cards in the newer set under the published guidance.
Booster-pack favorites are reset
The Gameplay FAQ says that adding a new booster pack automatically resets your favorited booster packs. This affects which packs you marked as favorites; it does not indicate that owned cards, duplicates or pack points are erased.
Some cards need an expansion choice for transfers
If a card is registered in more than one expansion, the game provides an expansion selector for trade or share actions. Select the expansion that corresponds to the copy you intend to use. This prevents a multi-expansion card from being treated as an ambiguous entry when you transfer it.
What does not happen to your duplicate cards
No documented automatic deletion
The official material does not say that duplicate cards are deleted when a new set is released. A launch therefore should not be treated as a cleanup event that removes extras from your collection. Copies remain available in My Cards until you spend, trade or share them through a supported action.
No documented automatic conversion
There is also no general rule saying that extra copies turn into pack points, new-set points, tickets or another compensation currency at launch. If a future event or patch introduces a conversion, it would be a new, event-specific rule rather than the behavior described in the standing FAQs.

No collection-wide reset
A new expansion adds another collection category; it does not reset your existing registration progress. Your older cards continue to belong to their original expansion, and your new cards begin filling the separate release.
Useful ways to handle duplicates
Keeping every extra copy is not your only option. The collecting, trading and sharing guidance describes three ways duplicates can provide value. Each option has a different effect on your remaining supply.

Retention has the most flexibility. Extra copies can support decks, remain available for a later trade, or preserve a buffer in case a transfer rule requires you to hold a copy. The official documentation does not promise that every card will always be tradeable, so keeping an extra copy is the conservative choice when you are uncertain about a card’s future eligibility.
Consider retaining at least the copies you may need for your own play before spending the rest. This is a collection-management decision, not an automatic requirement imposed by a set launch.
Spend copies on flair
The Pokémon Company’s collecting guide says that players with many copies of one card can use them to obtain flair. Flair is a cosmetic use for surplus copies: it changes how an eligible card is presented rather than adding another playable card to your collection.

Because the copies are used in the flair transaction, compare the cosmetic benefit with the value of retaining those cards. A rare card or one you expect to use in a trade may be more valuable to keep than to decorate immediately. The guide establishes that multiple copies can be used for flair, but the amount required and the available cosmetic results can depend on the card and the in-game offer.

Trading can move a duplicate to another player instead of consuming it for a cosmetic effect. Eligibility rules apply. The official Trading FAQ describes matching-rarity requirements, and cards that have flair must be traded under the corresponding flair conditions. In practice, check the trade screen for the card’s current eligibility before assuming that any duplicate can be offered.
If the same card is registered in more than one expansion, use the expansion selector supplied in the trade interface. Choosing the correct expansion is part of preparing the transfer; it is not a conversion of the card into a different set.
Share a copy
Sharing is another documented action that can reduce the number of copies shown in My Cards. Treat it like a transfer: confirm which copy and expansion the interface is using, and make sure you are comfortable with the reduced count before accepting the action.
How to decide whether to keep, flair, trade or share
Use the following framework whenever a new set is announced. It separates four kinds of value that are easy to confuse.

A practical priority order
- Keep the copies you need for your own decks or collection goals.
- Set aside copies you may want for a trade, especially when rarity or flair conditions could limit replacements.
- Use remaining eligible copies for flair if the cosmetic result is worth giving up the card.
- Share copies when you specifically want to transfer them and have checked the resulting count.
This order is a risk-management suggestion. The game does not require a particular sequence, and your preferred balance between collecting, trading and cosmetics may lead to a different choice.
What happens to old pack points when the new set arrives?
Old pack points stay associated with the expansion whose packs generated them. Suppose you earned points from packs in expansion A1. Those points remain an A1 resource and can be exchanged only for cards appearing in A1. Opening packs from a newer expansion creates or contributes to that expansion’s own point pool; it does not merge the balances.
This lock-in is important when planning a purchase. If you are close to an older expansion card, spending points before moving your attention to a new release may make sense. Conversely, saving points does not create flexibility across sets: the points will still be restricted to the expansion that produced them.
The published guidance does not describe a launch bonus, expiry, refund or automatic exchange rate for unused points. Read the news notice attached to a particular event for any temporary rule rather than assuming that the standing pack-point behavior has changed.

Special cases that cause confusion
A card appears in multiple expansions
Duplicate-looking entries are not necessarily interchangeable for every action. When one card is registered in multiple expansions, the transfer interface can ask you to identify the expansion. Check that selector before trading or sharing so the intended registration is used.

You give away your last copy after earning flair
The Trading FAQ states that flair does not disappear when you give away your last copy. However, you cannot view that flair while you have no copy of the card. If you later obtain another copy, the existing flair can be viewed again. Giving away the final physical copy therefore affects visibility, not the continued existence of the flair.
Flair changes the transfer requirements
A card with flair is not automatically treated like an ordinary copy in a trade. Matching flair conditions apply according to the Trading FAQ. Check the proposed trade’s requirements instead of assuming that a regular duplicate can replace a flaired one.
A new event adds a special rule
The standing FAQs do not promise a universal duplicate conversion or compensation system for every future set. A limited-time event, regional release or later patch could introduce a different action. The in-game news attached to that expansion is the final authority for a rule that is not covered by the general documentation.
Launch-day checklist
- Open the expansion’s news or announcement and look for a specific duplicate, trading or pack-point rule.
- Confirm the new expansion code so you know which pack points and cards belong to the release.
- Review your favorites after the new booster pack is added; the documented reset may have cleared your previous selections.
- Check your My Cards totals before using flair, trading or sharing. A launch itself should not reduce them.
- For a card listed in multiple expansions, choose the intended expansion in the transfer interface.
- Verify rarity and flair requirements on the trade screen before committing a copy.
- Keep enough copies for your own play and collection goals before spending the remainder on cosmetics or transfers.
Bottom line for duplicate management
A new Pokémon TCG Pocket set adds a separate expansion; it does not, according to the published official guidance, sweep away your old duplicates or turn them into a universal currency. Your choices are deliberate: retain copies, use eligible extras for flair, trade under the rarity and flair rules, or share them. Pack points remain locked to their original expansion, while the automatic favorite reset affects booster-pack preferences only. Recheck the in-game news for each launch because a future event could add a rule that the general FAQs do not currently promise.
