Downloading a PlayStation Plus game does not make it yours permanently. When the membership entitlement ends, Sony can stop the account from launching a monthly, Game Catalog, or Classics Catalog title even if its files are still installed on the PS5. Sony’s published guidance explains access and entitlement; it does not say that expiration automatically deletes the installed game files.
The result depends on which benefit supplied the game, whether the subscription has actually expired, whether the title is still in the catalog, and whether you purchased the game separately. DLC and add-ons tied to a catalog game have their own access consequence as well.
Installation is not ownership
A PS5 stores game data locally, but PlayStation Plus access is controlled by your account’s membership entitlement. Sony’s US games FAQ states: “You can add the monthly games to your game library to download and play at any time as long as you have an active membership plan.” The requirement is the active plan, not merely the presence of the download on the console. First identify how the game entered your library
PlayStation Plus has several benefit types. They are not interchangeable, so the same “downloaded from PS Plus” description can hide different rules.

What changes when the membership reaches its end date
Monthly games
A monthly game remains playable only while the account has an active membership. Claiming it during an earlier month, downloading it, or leaving it installed does not remove that condition. If you later renew the membership, the monthly-game entitlement can become usable again, provided the same account and applicable plan are used.
Game Catalog downloads
Catalog access has two simultaneous requirements: the account must have Extra or Premium, and Sony must still offer that title in the Game Catalog. If either condition fails, the subscription entitlement no longer authorizes play. A title can therefore become unavailable even before your own subscription ends if Sony removes it from the service.

Classics Catalog downloads
Classics Catalog games follow the Premium benefit rather than the monthly-game benefit. Letting Premium lapse removes the subscription basis for play. If a Classics title also has an announced availability limit, that date matters independently of your billing cycle.
Purchased copies
If you bought the game separately with the same account, the purchase entitlement is the relevant one. The fact that a PS Plus version was also downloaded can make the library look ambiguous, so check the account that completed the purchase before assuming the subscription is the only license.
Catalog removal dates are a separate risk
Sony warns that Game Catalog titles can have an end date. A subscription that is still active does not guarantee continued access to every catalog game. Before starting a long game, look for any availability notice on its catalog listing and allow for the possibility that the title will leave before you finish it.

Do not assume that renewing after a removal automatically brings the game back. Sony’s pages establish that titles can leave the service; they do not promise that a removed title will return or that resubscribing restores every removed catalog game. Confirm that the specific title is offered again, or purchase it if you want a durable purchase entitlement.

Sony’s US FAQ states: “If your membership expires, or if the content leaves the service you’ll also lose access to the DLC and add-on content associated with that game.” This applies to add-ons associated with the catalog game, not automatically to every piece of downloadable content on your account. Sony identifies two ways to use that associated DLC again: resubscribe, or purchase the underlying game. Purchasing the game does not mean every unrelated add-on is transferred between accounts; the account that owns the game and DLC still matters. If the game has left the catalog, renewal alone may not help unless the title is available to your account again.

Cancellation is not the same as immediate expiration
Turning off automatic renewal generally expresses a billing preference; it does not, by itself, establish the exact moment access ends. The material available for this topic does not verify a single account-specific expiration time for every region, payment method or promotional term. Check the subscription status shown in your PlayStation account settings and use the displayed end date as the operative deadline.
Until that date, the account should be evaluated as an active member for the benefits included in its tier. After the date, test the entitlement again only after confirming which account is signed in. If a game is locked earlier than expected, compare the account’s displayed status with the game’s catalog listing rather than assuming that cancellation caused an immediate removal.

- Identify the source. Decide whether the title was claimed as a monthly game, downloaded from the Game Catalog, downloaded from the Classics Catalog, or bought separately. Your answer determines which entitlement to verify.
- Check the membership status. Open the PlayStation account’s subscription-management area on the PS5 or on PlayStation’s website. Confirm whether the membership is active, its end date, and the tier shown for the account that claimed the game.
- Match the tier to the benefit. Essential includes monthly games; Extra adds the Game Catalog; Premium adds the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming. A lower tier cannot substitute for a higher-tier catalog benefit.
- Check the title’s current listing. For a catalog game, look at its current Game Catalog or Classics Catalog page for an end-date or removal notice. An active subscription does not override a title that has left the service.
- Check for a purchase entitlement. Review the purchasing account’s library or transaction history. If the game was bought separately, launch it while signed into that owner account rather than relying on the PS Plus listing.
- For DLC, verify the base game first. Determine whether the underlying catalog title is still available through the membership or is now owned. Sony ties the DLC consequence to the associated game’s membership or service status.
- Allow for account and region differences. If the status and listing do not explain the lock, contact PlayStation Support with the account, title and purchase information. The support pages cited here are for the United States, and Sony notes that benefits and availability can differ by country.
What Sony’s published pages do not establish
- Automatic deletion: The guidance describes access and entitlement, not automatic removal of installed game files. Do not promise that files will be deleted, or that they will remain indefinitely.
- A universal lock screen: The reviewed pages do not specify the exact wording or icon that appears on every PS5 when a PS Plus entitlement ends.
- Cloud-save retention: These sources do not establish how long cloud saves remain available after membership expiration. Do not infer a retention period from the game-access rule.
- Secondary-account behavior: Sony’s plan information says selected benefits can be shared on one PS5 when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled, but it does not settle every post-expiration scenario for other accounts on that console.
- Worldwide uniformity: The cited pages are Sony’s US materials. Country-specific catalogs, plan names, prices and availability can differ and may change.

Sony’s plan support information describes these benefit levels. The table does not imply that a catalog title becomes a purchase; it remains a subscription entitlement unless you buy it separately.

Before you let a subscription lapse
- Write down which installed games are monthly benefits and which came from a catalog.
- Finish time-sensitive catalog games first, especially those showing a removal date.
- Check whether important DLC is associated with a catalog game, because Sony says that DLC can become unavailable when membership ends or the game leaves.
- Confirm the account that owns any separately purchased copy or add-on.
- Record the membership end date shown in your account instead of relying on the date you turned off renewal.
- Keep saved data backed up using the storage options available to your account, but do not assume these sources establish post-expiration cloud-save access.
Regional and account caveats
Availability, tier names, game catalogs and removal dates are not guaranteed to be identical outside the United States. Sony can also change a catalog after you download a game. When a result conflicts with the general rules above, prioritize the title page and subscription status for the specific country and account you use.
For a locked game, the decisive question is not “Is it still installed?” It is “Which account entitlement authorizes this copy today?” Answering that question—monthly benefit, catalog membership, current catalog listing, or separate purchase—usually identifies the correct next step without deleting and redownloading the game.
