Character.AI has not said what will happen to users’ chats or characters if the platform is wound down. On October 12, 2026, the company announced a court-supervised Chapter 11 sale process and said the service was still operating at that time. It hopes a sale will allow the platform to continue; if no actionable bid emerges, it says the platform will be wound down. For a copy of your account data, request Character.AI’s export now: the company says processing can take 3–4 weeks, and the download link expires after 7 days.
What Character.AI has announced about a possible shutdown
Character.AI’s October 12, 2026 announcement said the company had begun a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy process to facilitate a court-supervised sale. The announcement described a possible change of ownership or other sale outcome that could keep the service operating, as well as a wind-down if no actionable bid is available. It did not announce that the platform had shut down or give a shutdown date.
The company said it expected the sale process to finish by the end of November or perhaps early December 2026. That is an expected window for the sale process, not a promised date for closing the service. The announcement’s statements describe the situation at the time they were made; they do not establish the current result of the sale process or a later change in service availability.

Those statements were limited to the announcement date, so subscribers should check current account and billing notices rather than treat them as a guarantee about future charges or access.

What the two possible outcomes do—and do not—tell users
The company described two possibilities: a sale with an actionable proposal that could enable continued operations, or a wind-down if no such bid is available. It did not say that a particular buyer had been selected, that a sale would preserve every feature, or that any buyer would take over users’ accounts. The sale process itself is not confirmation that service will continue unchanged.
Likewise, the conditional wind-down statement is not a shutdown schedule. The announcement does not give users a final date to log in, a last day to request exports, or a guaranteed period to retrieve data. The practical distinction is that the sale and service status are company announcements, while the post-closure handling of individual content remains unspecified. Recheck current notices before making decisions based on the October 12 status.
Will chats, characters, and account data survive a wind-down?
There is no published shutdown-specific answer in the October 12 announcement. It does not say whether users would have an access period after a closure announcement, whether chats or character definitions would be deleted, how long any data would be retained, or whether characters could be transferred to another service. It also sets no final date by which users must export their data.
That uncertainty matters because several different things can be meant by “keeping” a Character.AI account. A data export is a copy of account data; continued access means being able to sign in and use the platform; and transfer means importing content into another service. The export instructions establish that users can request a copy, but they do not promise continued access after a wind-down or a way to import characters elsewhere.
Character.AI points users to existing export and deletion controls and says its Privacy Policy remains in effect. Those are general account and privacy provisions, not a specific plan for what happens to content after a company wind-down. Do not assume that a privacy policy, deletion control, or ordinary export option guarantees a particular post-shutdown retention schedule.

Public and private characters are a separate issue
Character visibility settings govern who can see created characters while the service is operating. An older help article describes settings and posting options that can make content public or visible only to its creator. It does not say whether either kind of character would remain available after the platform closes. A public character should not be treated as a guaranteed backup, and a private character should not be treated as automatically preserved for its creator.
The 2024 migration does not predict a shutdown
When Character.AI retired its old or beta site in September 2024, it said recent chats were available on the new site or app, older chats could need manual migration, and chats would be preserved and migrated. That was a transition between interfaces while the service continued. It is not a commitment about what will happen if the company winds down the platform, so it cannot be used to infer that chats will move to a successor service.

Character.AI’s Help Center instructions give separate routes for web and the mobile app. Start the request from the account whose data you want. The company says processing may take 3–4 weeks; when the export is ready, it emails a download link to the address associated with that account. The link is valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent.
On the web
- Sign in to Character.AI using the account you want to preserve.
- Open Profile, then select Profile Settings.
- Go to Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data.
- Submit the export request and monitor the email address associated with the account for the download link.
- When the email arrives, download the export before the link expires. Keep a copy in a location you control.
In the mobile app
- Sign in to the Character.AI app using the account you want to preserve.
- Open Profile, then Settings.
- Go to Legal & Privacy → Export Data.
- Submit the request, watch the email address associated with the account, and download the file promptly when Character.AI sends the link.
If a menu label or route differs in your version of the app, look for the account’s data export option in the profile or privacy settings. Character.AI’s October 8, 2026 Help Center article is the current source for these instructions, processing time, and link expiry.
Plan around the processing and download windows
The two time periods matter for different reasons. The stated 3–4 weeks is the possible wait for the export to be prepared; it is not a deadline to download it. The 7-day period starts when the company emails the link, not when you submit the request. If you request an export, keep access to the email account associated with Character.AI and check it for the delivery message. Once the link arrives, download the file promptly rather than waiting until the final day.

Because export processing can take weeks and the company has not promised completion before a possible wind-down, requesting a copy sooner reduces the risk of waiting until a deadline that has not been announced. It does not remove the uncertainty: the company has not said that all pending requests would be fulfilled before closure or specified what happens to a request if the service changes.

What the export does—and does not—promise
The instructions confirm a way to request an account data copy, but they do not specify its file format or list every item included. They do not confirm that every conversation, message, or character definition will appear in the download. Nor do they promise that the file will be readable in a particular app or compatible with another AI service.
For that reason, treat the export as a preservation step, not as a complete restoration or migration plan. After downloading it, inspect the contents to see what is actually there. If particular chats or character details are especially important, consider saving the information you can still access separately in a format you can read, while recognizing that this does not create an official full backup or establish that every platform feature can be reproduced.
Do not wait for a confirmed shutdown date before requesting the export. The stated processing window is measured in weeks, while a download link remains valid for only 7 days after it is emailed. The company has not promised that all requests would be completed before any possible wind-down.
Should you delete your account?
Character.AI says account deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed. Its deletion help page provides web and app routes, but does not explain whether a pending export request remains valid after deletion or how long data may remain in backups.

If you want to retain records, request and download an export before deleting the account. Deletion is not a backup method: it is a permanent account action, and the published instructions do not promise that it will preserve a copy for you. If your aim is only to stop using the service while keeping a chance to access account information, do not treat deletion as a necessary step to prepare for a possible shutdown.
Privacy rights and contacting Character.AI
Character.AI’s privacy FAQ says users may have rights to access, correct, delete, object to or restrict processing of personal data, or port it, depending on their region. It lists privacy@character.ai as a privacy contact. The rights available and the process for exercising them can differ by jurisdiction.
These general privacy rights do not answer whether chats or characters will stay online after a wind-down. If you need to make a privacy request, contact Character.AI through the applicable privacy route; if your immediate goal is to keep a copy of account data, use the export control and download the resulting file.
What to do now
- Request an export promptly if you want a copy of account data. The stated processing time is 3–4 weeks.
- Watch the associated email account for the export link and download it within the 7-day validity period.
- Keep the downloaded file somewhere you control and check what it contains instead of assuming it includes every chat or character.
- Do not rely on public visibility or the 2024 site migration as a promise that content will persist after a company wind-down.
- Check current company announcements and account notices for any change in sale status, platform access, paid features, or export guidance.

Can I transfer my Character.AI characters or chats to another service?
Character.AI’s export instructions do not promise compatibility with another service or provide an import path. They also do not specify the export format or confirm that every chat and character definition is included. Treat an export as a data copy to inspect, not as a guaranteed way to recreate a character or migrate a conversation.
Does the 2024 migration mean my chats will be saved if Character.AI closes?
No such conclusion is supported. The September 2024 announcement concerned moving from the old or beta site to Character.AI’s continuing site or app, and described chat migration within that service. It is not a promise about a company wind-down.
Should I delete my account to protect my data?
No. Character.AI says deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed, and its deletion information does not say that deletion preserves a copy or that a pending export survives. If you want records, request and download an export before considering account deletion.
