Canceling AT&T service tied to a phone promotion normally ends the remaining monthly bill credits, and the unpaid device-installment balance becomes due. Changing plans is not automatically fatal, but a move away from the plan named in your promotion can make the line ineligible. In one AT&T support scenario, you can restore eligibility by returning to a qualifying unlimited plan within 30 days of AT&T’s notification text.
The controlling documents are your promotion terms, device-installment agreement and account notices—not a universal AT&T rule. Check those terms before changing anything, because the qualifying plan, deadline and credit amount vary by offer.
How AT&T promotional credits work
Most device promotions do not give the entire discount at purchase. Instead, AT&T applies equal monthly credits against installments over the promotion’s term. AT&T says these arrangements are often spread over 36 months, and customers generally must keep the required service and the same promotional device for that period. The exact term and conditions are stated in the offer and installment agreement.

Your account still contains the unpaid principal on the device, so a lost credit and a device balance are separate issues.

What happens if you cancel AT&T service
The credits stop
Current AT&T promotion terms state that canceling service stops promotional credits. They do not continue as a payment to you after the line is closed, and they do not transfer to a replacement carrier. The precise wording can differ by offer, so read the terms attached to your device and line.
The remaining device balance is due
When the service supporting the promotion is canceled, the unpaid balance under the device-installment agreement remains your responsibility. AT&T’s terms describe the remaining balance as due after cancellation. Your final amount depends on the installment schedule, payments already made, credits already posted and any account-specific adjustments; the published material does not establish one universal dollar figure.
Do not confuse a monthly credit with a reduction in the legal installment principal. A credit that would have appeared on future bills is normally lost when eligibility ends. It does not erase the installments that have already accrued or make the phone free at cancellation.

What to check before closing the line
- Identify the exact phone, wireless line and promotion identification in your account.
- Record the current unpaid device balance and the number of installments remaining.
- Read the promotion’s cancellation language and the device-installment agreement.
- Save a copy of the latest bill and the customer service summary.
- Ask AT&T how the final bill will show the device balance, taxes and any credits already earned.
AT&T’s Device Installment Plan Terms of Service govern the installment obligation. A cancellation request does not cancel that separate agreement.
What happens if you change to another AT&T plan
A plan change can make the line ineligible
Some promotions require a particular qualifying unlimited plan or another named service tier. Moving to a cheaper, older, limited-data or otherwise nonqualifying plan can remove eligibility even though the line remains active. Other offers may permit a broader set of plans. There is no single plan-change result that applies to every AT&T promotion.
Use the offer’s own qualifying-plan list rather than relying on a salesperson’s general description or on the fact that both plans are marketed as unlimited. Eligibility can depend on the exact plan version, line type, device, trade-in requirements and date of enrollment.

The 30-day correction window in AT&T’s guidance
AT&T’s “Stay Eligible for Your Promotion” guidance describes a specific qualifying-unlimited-plan case. If AT&T sends a notification text saying your change affected eligibility, returning to a qualifying unlimited plan within 30 days of that text can restore the credits for the described offer scenario. The deadline is tied to the notification text, not necessarily to the date you changed plans.

If you do not return within that stated period, AT&T says: “If you don’t, you won’t get the credit each month and the balance owed on your device will be due.” Treat that as an offer-specific remedy, not a guarantee for every promotion. Confirm the eligible plans and deadline shown in your own notice.
Other plan changes and line changes
Changing a plan without receiving a notice does not prove that credits are safe. A promotion can have conditions that appear only in its terms or customer service summary. Adding, removing or moving lines, changing account ownership, or altering a trade-in-related requirement may also affect eligibility when the offer says so. Ask AT&T to review the affected line before submitting the change and request the answer in writing or in a saved chat transcript.
Keep, change or cancel: the practical choice

Before you change or cancel: a step-by-step check
- Find the offer. Open the line’s customer service summary, promotion details and installment agreement. Note the device model, enrollment date, credit amount and required plan.
- Check current billing. On your AT&T bill, go to Last bill → View discounts and record the promotional credit that posted. AT&T says a new or corrected credit can take up to two bill periods to appear.
- Check notices. Search text messages and AT&T account communications for an eligibility warning. Record the date and the exact 30-day deadline if one is stated.
- Compare plans against the offer. Ask which specific plan codes or names qualify after the change. Get confirmation for the particular line and device, not just a general statement that the account remains active.
- Price the downside. Obtain the current unpaid installment balance and compare it with the total credits you would otherwise receive over the remaining months. The account’s figures, rather than a standard AT&T amount, determine the exposure.
- Save evidence. Download the bill, terms, notice and chat transcript. These records make it easier to correct a missed credit or challenge a final-bill error.
- Make the change only after confirmation. If the numbers or eligibility are unclear, wait and contact AT&T support before submitting the plan change or cancellation.
How to verify that credits are still posting
After a plan change, inspect the next bills instead of assuming the promotion survived. AT&T directs customers to the bill’s Last bill → View discounts area. Compare the promotional line item with the amount shown before the change and check whether the device installment itself is still listed.

If the credit remains missing after the stated period, contact AT&T with the line number, device, promotion name, change date, notification text and bill screenshots. Ask the representative to identify the precise term that ended eligibility and to state whether returning to a qualifying plan can restore credits. If the response conflicts with your written offer, request escalation and keep the case number.
Special timing rules in AT&T’s eligibility guidance
Notification-based reinstatement
The 30-day return route described above begins with AT&T’s notification text. A customer who notices a problem independently should not assume the same clock or remedy applies. Read the message for the qualifying plan, start date and expiration date, then verify those details with support.
New-line cancellation language
AT&T’s eligibility page separately discusses certain new-line promotions with a 90-day cancellation condition and a 30-day reinstatement route. Those periods are offer-specific and should not be applied to an established line or a different promotion without confirmation. You can lose credits without canceling service or changing plans. AT&T says upgrading the promotional device early or paying its installment balance in full may stop the monthly discount. The fact that the line remains active does not preserve a credit that requires the original device and installment arrangement.

Before an upgrade, ask whether the promotion permits an early upgrade, requires a trade-in, or ends when the old device is paid off. Compare the immediate payoff and new-device cost with the remaining promotional credits. Keep the answer with your account records because the promotion’s own terms control.
Common situations and the right response
“I switched plans and the credit vanished on the next bill.”
Check whether the new plan is listed as qualifying and whether AT&T sent an eligibility text. If the notice describes a 30-day return option, switch back within that window and ask support to document the restoration. If no notice exists, have AT&T review the promotion terms and explain the termination reason.
“I canceled, but the phone was not paid off.”
That is consistent with the installment structure: the service cancellation can end future credits while leaving the unpaid device balance due. Request the final-bill breakdown and compare it with your saved installment schedule. Dispute only a calculation or posting error; cancellation itself does not normally preserve the discount.
“The credit is missing, but I have not changed anything.”
Review Last bill → View discounts, allow the stated two-bill-period processing time when applicable, and contact support with prior bills showing the credit. Ask whether the line or device was flagged as ineligible and why. Do not cancel or pay off the device while investigating if preserving the promotion is your goal.
“I am moving to another carrier.”
Leaving AT&T does not transfer the promotional credits. Obtain the AT&T device payoff and final bill before porting or canceling so you know the amount that remains payable. A replacement phone, trade-in or new carrier offer cannot retroactively continue credits on the AT&T installment agreement.
Which document should settle a disagreement?
Start with the promotion’s written terms for the device and enrollment date, then read the device-installment agreement and customer service summary for the line. AT&T’s general Wireless Deals and Offers page notes that promotion terms can change, so a current web offer may not match an older enrollment. The account-specific documents and notices are the relevant evidence for your transaction.
AT&T publishes policy guidance, not statistics showing how often customers lose credits. No general percentage can predict the likelihood for your account. The reliable way to determine the result is to match your exact promotion, plan, line, device and timing to the written conditions, then confirm the outcome with AT&T before making an irreversible change.
