A Bitcoin difficulty increase usually reduces the bitcoin a miner can expect to earn from each unit of hashrate, so revenue and profit fall if the miner’s hardware, electricity cost, uptime, bitcoin price and transaction-fee income stay unchanged. A difficulty decrease normally improves expected bitcoin output per unit of hashrate, but it does not guarantee a profit: power, hosting, pool fees, hardware efficiency, financing and the market price of bitcoin can outweigh the improvement.

The right way to judge the effect is to compare expected revenue per unit of hashrate (hashprice) with the complete cost of operating the specific machine, then model several price, fee and difficulty scenarios.

Why network difficulty changes a miner’s expected earnings

Bitcoin mining is a competitive proof-of-work process. Miners repeatedly calculate hashes until one satisfies the network’s difficulty target and produces a valid block. Difficulty is the network-wide measure of how hard that target is to meet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At a fixed machine hashrate, a higher target difficulty means the machine is expected to find fewer valid blocks, or fewer shares of block rewards through a pool, over the same period. The expected bitcoin output per terahash or petahash therefore falls. A lower difficulty reverses that relationship and raises expected output per unit of hashrate.

Core Scientific describes the all-else-equal relationship in its Form 10-Q: "Increased difficulty reduces the mining proceeds of the equipment proportionally and eventually requires bitcoin miners to upgrade their mining equipment to remain profitable and compete effectively with other miners." That is company disclosure rather than a guarantee for every operation; the actual result also depends on price, fees and operating costs. Core Scientific SEC filing

What changes and what does not

  • Expected coin production: changes with your hashrate’s share of total network work and the current difficulty.
  • Electricity consumption: does not automatically fall when difficulty rises. An ASIC drawing the same power continues to consume roughly the same energy unless you change its operating settings or turn it off.
  • Revenue in dollars: depends on the bitcoin price, expected bitcoin production and transaction-fee income.
  • Profit: also includes electricity, cooling, hosting, pool fees, maintenance, downtime, financing and the hardware’s capital cost.

How Bitcoin difficulty is adjusted

The protocol adjusts difficulty after each group of approximately 2,016 blocks. At the intended average of about ten minutes per block, that is roughly two weeks in calendar time, although the elapsed time varies because the adjustment is based on block count rather than a fixed number of days. The purpose is to keep the long-run average block interval near ten minutes. Cambridge Digital Mining Industry Report

When difficulty rises

If blocks were found faster than the target during the previous adjustment period, the next difficulty is raised. This usually reflects more effective network hashrate, whether from new machines, returning machines or cheaper operating conditions. Every existing machine then represents a smaller expected share of network production unless its operator adds hashrate or improves efficiency.

When difficulty falls

If blocks were found more slowly than the target, difficulty is lowered. A fall can follow widespread shutdowns, curtailment, equipment failures or uneconomic power prices. Remaining miners receive a larger expected share of production for each unit of hashrate, but the improvement is only on the revenue side; weak bitcoin prices or high power bills can still leave a machine unprofitable.

Use hashprice, then calculate your own margin

Hashprice is a revenue-per-unit-of-hash measure, commonly expressed for a hashrate unit and a time period such as dollars per petahash per day. It is useful for comparing network economics, but it is not a personal profit figure. Multiply the relevant hashprice by the machine’s hashrate to estimate gross revenue, then subtract the costs that apply to that machine.

A practical model separates three different questions:

  1. Gross revenue: How much bitcoin and fee income might the machine earn before operating expenses?
  2. Cash operating margin: Does revenue cover electricity, hosting, pool fees, cooling, repairs and other recurring cash expenses?
  3. Full economic return: After including the purchase price, financing, depreciation, replacement timing and the value of capital, does the project earn an acceptable return?

Those thresholds can produce different decisions. A machine may cover its electricity bill while failing to recover its purchase cost. Conversely, an already-paid-for machine may continue operating at a positive cash margin even when buying new hardware would not make economic sense.

Core variables to put in the model

Variable Effect on expected result Questions to specify
Network difficulty and total hashrate Higher difficulty generally lowers BTC output per unit of hashrate; lower difficulty generally raises it. What difficulty or hashrate assumption, and what adjustment date?
Machine hashrate More hashrate raises expected production, provided the machine is online. Is the advertised rate sustained or dependent on a tuning mode?
Energy efficiency Lower joules per terahash reduce electricity needed for a given hashrate. What power draw occurs at the chosen frequency, voltage and temperature?
Electricity price Usually the largest recurring cost; a higher rate compresses margin. Is the rate fixed, time-of-use, demand-based, or subject to curtailment?
Bitcoin price Changes the fiat value of the same BTC output. Which price scenarios and currency conversion are being used?
Transaction fees Add to the block reward received by miners and can materially change revenue when fee demand changes. Is the assumption based on a stated period or a long-run scenario?
Pool fee and payout method Reduce or change the timing and variance of payouts. What percentage, minimum payout and variance model apply?
Uptime and curtailment Fewer operating hours reduce realized production even if the machine’s nominal hashrate is unchanged. What outage, maintenance and curtailment allowance is realistic?
Capital and financing Determine whether operating cash flow recovers the hardware investment and interest. Are purchase cost, useful life, resale value and interest included?

Why a difficulty increase does not always mean lower dollar revenue

Difficulty changes expected BTC output, not the fiat price of that output. If bitcoin appreciates enough, the dollar value of fewer coins can still rise. A surge in transaction fees can have a similar effect. Conversely, a difficulty decrease can arrive during a bitcoin-price decline, leaving dollar revenue flat or lower despite improved coin production.

Core Scientific identifies bitcoin price, company hashrate, network difficulty and transaction fees as revenue drivers. In its all-else-equal comparison, higher bitcoin price, higher company hashrate and higher fees are favorable, while higher difficulty is unfavorable. The comparison isolates one driver at a time; real markets move several drivers simultaneously. Read the filing’s discussion of mining revenue and difficulty

Observed change Expected effect before other variables What can offset or reverse it
Difficulty increases Less expected BTC per unit of hashrate; lower revenue against unchanged power use. Higher bitcoin price, higher fees, cheaper electricity, better machine efficiency or more uptime.
Difficulty decreases More expected BTC per unit of hashrate; improved revenue potential. Lower bitcoin price, weak fees, outages, expensive hosting or a machine that is already inefficient.
Difficulty and price rise together BTC output falls per unit, while each coin is worth more. The net dollar result depends on the relative size of both moves.
Difficulty and price fall together Both production per unit and coin value weaken. Very low-cost operators may remain online; higher-cost operators may shut down.

Electricity is usually the decisive operating cost

The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance’s 2025 survey covered 49 digital-mining firms headquartered in 16 jurisdictions and operating in 23 countries. Respondents represented 48% of Bitcoin network hashrate (268 EH/s) at data collection. Electricity accounted for more than 80% of surveyed firms’ cash-based operating expenses. The survey reported median electricity-only costs of $45 per megawatt-hour and median all-in costs of $55.5 per megawatt-hour. These are medians for that sample, not a universal rate for a home miner or every commercial facility. Cambridge report and methodology

Electricity terms can matter as much as the headline rate. Seasonal pricing, demand charges, minimum commitments, taxes, transmission fees and the right to curtail during grid stress can change the effective cost. A hosting contract may add a management charge, cooling charge or revenue share. Model the invoice you will actually pay rather than a promotional energy number.

What the recent published figures do—and do not—show

CoinShares reported that monthly average hashprice reached US$27.7 per PH/s/day in June 2026. Its Q2 2026 report put listed miners’ weighted-average ex-tax cash cost to produce one bitcoin at approximately US$75,500. That is a listed-company average for the report period, not an individual machine’s breakeven price or a live quote. CoinShares Q2 2026 Bitcoin mining report

The same report cited a difficulty reading of 127.48T after a 0.99% upward adjustment on August 8, 2026. CoinShares said that reading was about 18% below its reported record of 155.97T on October 29, 2025. Both are dated observations from that report, not current network readings. CoinShares attributed depressed Q2 hashprice to a lower bitcoin price, transaction fees below 1% of block rewards and difficulty remaining high relative to revenue.

CoinShares also estimated network hashrate at about 1,160 EH/s in early October 2025 and 850 EH/s by early February 2026, followed by a recovery. Those historical estimates illustrate how machines leaving or rejoining the network can influence difficulty; they are not a forecast of the next adjustment.

  1. Record the machine specification: enter sustained hashrate, power draw and efficiency in joules per terahash at the intended operating mode. Account for the power supply, not only the chip rating.
  2. Choose a dated network scenario: enter a stated difficulty or hashrate assumption and the period it represents. Build at least a base case, a higher-difficulty case and a lower-difficulty case.
  3. Estimate gross production: apply the assumed hashprice to the machine’s hashrate and operating hours. Keep BTC-denominated output separate from its fiat conversion.
  4. Apply pool terms: subtract the pool fee and model the payout method, minimum payout and variance. Do not treat a pool’s projected figure as guaranteed income.
  5. Calculate energy cost: multiply actual kilowatts by expected operating hours and the all-in electricity rate. Add demand charges or time-of-use differences where applicable.
  6. Add facility costs: include hosting, cooling, networking, rent, maintenance, insurance, replacement fans and downtime. If a host can curtail the machine, reduce expected operating hours.
  7. Separate cash and capital results: show the daily or monthly cash margin, then include purchase price, financing interest and depreciation to calculate payback or return.
  8. Stress-test the result: lower bitcoin price, lower fees, higher difficulty, a power-price increase and several outage days. A setup that survives only one optimistic combination is not robust.

Questions to ask a hardware seller or host

  • Is the quoted hashrate measured at a specific temperature, firmware version or overclock?
  • What continuous power draw should be used for the electrical circuit and cooling system?
  • Are repair parts, labor, shipping and failed-hashboard downtime included?
  • Does the hosting agreement pass through power-price changes or curtailment?
  • What pool fee, payout scheme and account minimum apply?
  • What useful life and resale assumption supports the capital-recovery calculation?

Common mistakes when interpreting difficulty and profitability

Treating a network number as a personal breakeven

Network difficulty and hashprice describe shared conditions. They do not include your electricity contract, machine efficiency, pool fee or uptime. Two miners can face the same difficulty and have opposite profit outcomes.

Assuming a difficulty drop guarantees profit

A lower difficulty increases expected output per unit of hashrate, but a machine can still lose cash if its power and hosting bill exceed revenue. Check the cash operating margin before considering capital recovery.

Using a company cost figure as a home-mining benchmark

Commercial miners may have different energy rates, fleet efficiency, financing, tax treatment and hedging. The US$75,500 CoinShares figure is a weighted average for listed miners in Q2 2026, not a universal threshold.

Ignoring the adjustment’s timing

Difficulty updates after roughly 2,016 blocks, not on a guaranteed calendar date. A calculator that labels a two-week result as certain can misstate both the adjustment date and the number of operating days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Counting gross coins as spendable profit

Gross production must be reduced by pool charges, electricity, hosting, cooling, repairs, downtime and taxes or financing relevant to the operator. Keep each line visible so an apparent gain is not confused with a full-cost return.

A decision framework for a changing network

  1. Start with the next adjustment risk: identify whether recent hashrate and block timing suggest upward or downward difficulty pressure, while recognizing that the result is uncertain until the adjustment occurs.
  2. Rank your cost position: compare your effective electricity and hosting cost with the revenue your machine produces at the selected hashprice.
  3. Check efficiency before adding machines: replacing an inefficient unit can improve margin more reliably than simply buying more hashrate, especially after a difficulty increase.
  4. Set an operating rule: define the price, hashprice or cash-margin level at which you continue, curtail or shut down. Write the rule before market volatility makes the decision emotional.
  5. Recalculate after each material change: update difficulty, bitcoin price, fees, power invoices, uptime and pool terms rather than relying on an old calculator result.

Difficulty is therefore a pressure on revenue per unit of computing power, not a complete profitability forecast. The durable advantage belongs to the operation that combines efficient hardware, dependable uptime and low, predictable energy and facility costs while testing its assumptions against adverse price, fee and difficulty scenarios.
