When less food reaches the deep ocean, animals may have less energy for maintenance, growth and reproduction. Filter feeders and seabed scavengers often feel the shortage first; predators can then lose prey. The outcome is not identical for every species: severity depends on how much food falls, its nutritional quality, temperature-driven energy demand, habitat, alternative foods and how long the shortage lasts.
Why food reaches the deep sea in the first place
Most deep-ocean ecosystems are powered from above. Surface phytoplankton and microbes produce organic matter. Dead cells, mucus, fecal pellets and other fragments clump together as they sink, collecting additional debris on the way down. NOAA calls this falling material marine snow; it can be filtered from the water column or scavenged after it settles on the seafloor. The downward supply is variable rather than a fixed conveyor belt. Surface production, decomposition during the descent and ocean currents all alter how much organic carbon arrives at a particular depth and location. A decline can therefore mean fewer particles, less energy per particle, or a delay in when the food arrives.
What a food shortfall does to individual animals
Less energy for basic metabolism
Animals use incoming energy first for respiration and routine maintenance. If intake falls below those needs, stored fat and other reserves are consumed. Body condition can deteriorate before population numbers change. Filter feeders may process more water for the same nutritional return, while deposit feeders and scavengers may travel farther or spend more time searching.

Slower growth and delayed reproduction
After maintenance costs are met, remaining energy supports growth, gonad development, eggs, larvae and other reproductive activities. A prolonged shortfall can produce smaller juveniles, fewer reproductive adults or fewer viable offspring. These effects may appear years before a census shows a large decline, especially in species that mature slowly.
Higher mortality when reserves run out
Animals in poor condition are less able to withstand disease, injuries, oxygen stress or competition. Starvation can become direct mortality when alternative prey are unavailable. A local decline in abundance does not by itself prove starvation, however; currents, predation, fishing, habitat disturbance and recruitment also influence counts.
Food quantity and food quality are different problems
A smaller quantity of marine snow reduces the amount of energy entering the system. A change in composition can reduce its nutritional value even when the mass of sinking material appears similar. Lipids are especially important to many zooplankton and fish because they provide concentrated energy for growth, migration and reproduction.

A northern Bering Sea analysis using 17 years of observations (2002–2018) found unusually low numbers of large, lipid-rich copepods and above-average numbers of smaller, lipid-poor copepods in 2018. NOAA’s account describes the possible ecosystem shift and notes that longer-term effects were uncertain: NOAA Fisheries, February 9, 2023. For a predator, eating the same number of prey may therefore deliver fewer calories.
Warming can increase demand while supply falls
Temperature changes the balance between food intake and energy use. In the eastern Bering Sea, laboratory measurements found that snow crabs’ caloric requirements nearly doubled as water temperature rose from 0°C to 3°C. During the 2018–2019 marine heatwave, the crabs also had a historically small area in which to forage, and juvenile crabs of the same shell width weighed less in 2018 than in 2017.
NOAA Fisheries reported that abundance fell sharply during and after the heatwave and that more than 10 billion crabs disappeared from the regional stock between 2018 and 2021. Scientists considered several mortality factors; NOAA’s account identifies starvation as a likely contributor in this regional event, not a universal explanation for deep-sea declines. Lead author Cody Szuwalski summarized the combination of pressures: During the marine heatwave, snow crabs faced a triple threat.

The case illustrates why food supply cannot be evaluated alone. An animal can face an effective shortage when its metabolic requirement rises, its foraging habitat contracts and prey become less nutritious at the same time.

Evidence that food supply and demand can diverge
A seven-year study of the abyssal eastern North Pacific recorded a 52–59% decline from 1989 to 1996 in the ratio of sinking particulate-organic-carbon supply to sediment-community oxygen consumption. The ratio compares food arriving at the seabed with the community’s measured demand for oxygen. The result is a site- and period-specific historical observation, not a current global estimate. The authors discussed a possible connection to changes in surface plankton, but that interpretation does not establish direct causation. When supply falls faster than animals can reduce their metabolism or switch foods, the mismatch appears as declining body condition, reduced activity, lower reproduction and eventually lower community biomass. If demand rises at the same time, the mismatch becomes larger even without an additional drop in food.

How effects move through the food web
Marine snow supports organisms at the base of deep-water and seafloor food webs. A reduction at that base can propagate upward as fewer small consumers are available to fish, crustaceans and other predators. Dave Kimmel of NOAA Fisheries’ Alaska Fisheries Science Center described the principle this way: Zooplankton are near the base of the marine food web. If the base changes, we will see changes higher in the foodweb. There will be species that respond better than others.
His statement appears in the 2023 NOAA discussion of northern Bering Sea zooplankton: NOAA Fisheries.
Predators can be hit harder because they need sufficient prey biomass, not merely a few surviving individuals. They may switch species, move to another area or endure a period of poor condition. Those adjustments can shift pressure onto the prey that remain and alter the composition of the community.

What models project at global scale
A 2021 study used three Earth-system models to estimate how climate change could alter marine food-web biomass under a “no mitigation policy” scenario. For 2090–2099 compared with 1986–2005, it projected an 18.5% decline in total consumer biomass and a 21.3% decline in predator abundance. These are modeled projections under a specified scenario, not measurements of an observed global deep-sea decline. Local food pulses can help without replacing background supply
Not all deep-sea food arrives as a diffuse rain. A whale carcass creates a “whale fall”: scavengers consume soft tissue over months, enriched sediments can support communities for more than a year, and organisms living on the skeleton may persist for years to decades. NOAA describes these stages at NOAA Ocean Service (updated September 23, 2026).
Whale falls demonstrate that specialized communities can exploit concentrated, local subsidies. They do not show that carcasses compensate for a broad reduction in marine snow across an ocean basin. Their locations are patchy, their arrival is unpredictable and many species cannot use them.
What determines whether a decline is temporary or severe?
- Magnitude and duration: a brief pulse reduction may be absorbed by stored reserves; repeated or multiyear shortages are more difficult.
- Species’ diet: generalists with alternative prey may switch, while specialists may not.
- Habitat and mobility: mobile animals can search wider areas, but travel itself costs energy and suitable habitat may be limited.
- Temperature and oxygen: warming can raise metabolic costs, while oxygen stress can further restrict feeding and movement.
- Life history: long-lived animals may survive a poor year but reproduce less; short-lived species can show faster population changes.
- Food quality: fewer lipid-rich prey can lower energy intake even when prey counts remain high.
- Predation and competition: a food shortage can intensify encounters among species that rely on the same limited patches.
There is no universal recovery time established for deep-sea animals. Recovery depends on when surface production and sinking transport return, how quickly populations reproduce, whether habitat remains suitable and whether predators or competitors have changed. The northern Bering Sea study specifically left longer-term effects uncertain; its manuscript is available from the NOAA Institutional Repository.
How scientists tell a food shortage from other causes
Researchers combine several measurements rather than infer starvation from a single population count. Typical evidence includes sediment traps that measure sinking particles, oxygen consumption by sediment communities, animal body mass at a given size, stomach or isotope analyses, prey lipid content, temperature records and surveys of foraging habitat.
A convincing diagnosis also requires matching timing and location. If food delivery drops before body condition and reproduction decline, and alternative causes do not explain the pattern, a food limitation becomes more plausible. Even then, warming, disease, fishing, predation and currents may operate together. The snow-crab heatwave is an example in which starvation was judged likely within a multi-factor event, rather than assigned as the sole cause.
The practical meaning of a declining deep-sea food source
At the individual level, less or poorer food usually means less energy available for maintenance, growth and reproduction. At the community level, it can reduce abundance and change which species dominate. At the food-web level, the loss may become larger higher up because predators depend on the biomass of many prey. But the response is conditional, not automatic: some animals switch diets, exploit carcasses or withstand short shortages, while specialists in isolated habitats may have few options.
