There is no single outcome. A free period on a paid app listing affects the store price, while a subscription free trial affects recurring billing. A promo code follows the product and terms it was issued for. First identify which kind of offer you used; then check the app’s current Google Play listing or subscription details.
“Free promotion” can mean four different things
Google Play treats paid-app sales, promo codes, subscription offers and permanent price changes as separate mechanisms. They can all look free to a user, but they end differently. The wording on the offer screen matters more than a social-media post, old screenshot or third-party app description.
Temporary sale on a paid app
A developer can temporarily discount a paid app. The promotion changes the price shown on the app’s store listing; it is not a subscription trial. Google’s pricing guidance confirms that paid-app sales are supported, but the page does not specify an exact sale-end transition or explain whether a download made during the sale remains an entitlement afterward. In practical terms, the sale affects what a new purchaser sees at checkout. It does not, by itself, enroll that person in recurring billing. When the promotion is over, read the live listing to see the developer’s current price. Do not assume every app automatically returns to the same former price, because the developer controls the price and promotion settings.

Promo code
A promo code can give a paid app, an in-app product or a subscription to a user at no charge. Redeeming one is not the same as starting a subscription trial. The access period and any later billing depend on the product and the code’s terms, so do not infer them from the app’s download price.
A code may therefore produce different results even when the word “free” appears in both offers. A code for a paid app concerns that app’s redemption, while a code for a subscription concerns the subscription product and its billing terms. Keep the redemption confirmation and note any expiry, eligibility or product description shown by Google Play.
Subscription free trial or introductory offer
A subscription may begin with a free-trial phase, a discounted introductory phase, or both. These are billing offers inside the app, not a temporary change to the app’s store price. Google says that after discounted offer phases finish, the subscription automatically renews at the base-plan price. Details are described in Google’s subscription documentation.
This is the scenario in which “free” can become a charge without another purchase action. The important figures are the offer duration, the base-plan price after the offer and the billing cadence. Eligibility can also be restricted by region or by whether the user has previously bought that app’s subscription.
Permanent change from paid to free
A developer may change an app’s base listing from paid to free. That is a permanent pricing decision for that app identity: Google says the same app cannot later be switched back to paid. To charge for a replacement, the developer must create a new app with a new package name.
This is not an expiring promotion. If the listing has genuinely changed its base price to free, the app remains free under that identity. A developer that later wants to charge for a substantially new offering must publish a separate app rather than simply restoring the old price.
What to expect when a paid-app sale ends
The listing price will reflect the developer’s current setting
When a limited-time sale finishes, the developer controls the app’s price and promotion settings. The practical answer is therefore to read the live Play Store listing after the offer period rather than assume that every app returns to one particular price or remains free. Google notes that a price or distribution update can take a few hours to appear.

That delay can explain why two people briefly see different states: one may see the old sale price while another sees the updated listing. A cached search result or an old link can also be stale. Wait for the listing to refresh, then check the price on the actual app page while signed in to the intended Google account.
Your previous download is an entitlement question, not a price question
The official pricing page reviewed for this topic does not settle whether someone who obtained a paid app during a temporary free sale keeps ownership, sees it in the library, or can always redownload it. If that is your concern, open the app’s page while signed in to the same Google account, check your Play Store library and consult current Google Play account-help guidance. Do not treat the end of the sale itself as proof that access will be removed—or as a guarantee that it will remain.
In other words, the end of a discount tells you what new users may pay; it does not answer every question about a past transaction. Account, device, distribution and entitlement records are the relevant places to investigate. If the app is no longer listed, unavailable in your country or replaced by another package, the result may require separate support guidance.
Different users may see different prices
Google Play can use currency conversion, local pricing patterns and tax treatment, and developers can set regional prices. Consequently, the amount shown in one country may not match another. A recent change may also take several hours to propagate, so a short delay does not necessarily mean the promotion was extended or ended early.

What happens after a promo code is redeemed?
Google’s pricing guidance groups promo codes separately from sales. A code may cover the app itself, a one-time in-app product or a subscription. The post-redemption result is tied to that item’s entitlement and the offer terms. For example, a code for a subscription should not be assumed to provide the same duration as a free trial advertised on the app’s paywall.
- Read the redemption confirmation and any expiry or eligibility language shown by Google Play.
- For an app, verify whether the item appears in your account’s library after redemption.
- For an in-app product or subscription, inspect the product or subscription record rather than relying on the app’s store price.
- Do not claim a universal “free forever” period unless the code’s terms explicitly provide one.
- Keep the code’s product description: an app code, an in-app-product code and a subscription code are not interchangeable.
If a code is rejected, expired or restricted by country or account eligibility, the listing’s ordinary price may still apply. The code’s terms—not the fact that the app was advertised as free elsewhere—control the redemption.

What happens when a subscription free trial ends?
Automatic renewal is the default behavior described by Google
After a subscription’s free or discounted offer phases conclude, Google says it automatically renews at the base-plan price. That means a user who does nothing can move from zero cost—or a reduced introductory price—to recurring paid billing. The base-plan amount and billing cadence should be displayed in the offer details.
“Free” describes the initial phase, not necessarily the whole subscription. A trial can also be followed by a discounted introductory phase before the regular base plan, so read every phase shown. The renewal price is a subscription charge, separate from whether the app itself can be downloaded without a purchase.
Check the offer before accepting it
Google Play’s subscription policy requires clear information before enrollment. It says: “Before a user is enrolled in your subscription: You must clearly and accurately describe the terms of your offer, including the duration, pricing, and description of accessible content or services.” Read the full Google Play subscriptions policy, which also requires clarity about conversion to a paid subscription, the amount charged and how to cancel.
- On the offer screen, identify whether the first phase is free, discounted or both.
- Record the trial or introductory length, the price that follows, and the billing interval.
- Check eligibility language. Google’s examples include offers limited to people who have never purchased that app’s subscription and to selected regions.
- Confirm what content or services the subscription unlocks; the app download itself does not establish those benefits.
- Before the offer ends, open Google Play’s subscription settings (in the Play app, use your profile picture and then Payments & subscriptions and Subscriptions; labels can vary by version) and follow the displayed cancellation instructions if you do not want the renewal.
The app’s download price cannot tell you whether you are enrolled in a trial. Enrollment is shown by the subscription offer and your subscription account. If you do not see a subscription record, do not assume that installing a free app created one.
Why a permanent paid-to-free switch is different
A temporary promotion and a permanent base-price change have opposite implications for developers. With a permanent switch, the app remains free under its existing identity. Google does not allow that same package to be changed back to paid later. If the developer wants to charge for a substantially new paid offering, it must publish a separate app with a different package name. Users should therefore distinguish “free for a limited time” wording from a listing that has simply changed its base price to free.

For users, a later paid replacement may be a different listing rather than a price change to the app they already know.
A practical check you can perform
- Identify the mechanism. Look for wording that says the app price is discounted, a promo code is being redeemed, or a subscription trial is starting.
- Check the relevant record. For a paid app, use the live store listing; for a subscription, use the subscription offer and account record; for a code, retain the redemption confirmation.
- Capture the important terms. Note the end date or duration, later price, billing cadence, regional eligibility and cancellation instructions where they are shown.
- Allow for propagation time. Google says price and distribution updates can take a few hours to appear.
- Verify access after the change. If your concern is redownloading a paid app obtained during a sale, check the same signed-in account’s library and current Google Play help. The pricing documentation does not provide a definitive entitlement rule for that case.
- Compare accounts and countries carefully. Different Google accounts, regions, taxes and eligibility rules can produce different offers without either listing being erroneous.
Common misunderstandings to avoid
- “The app was free, so it must stay free.” A paid-app sale can be temporary, and the current listing controls what new users pay.
- “A free download is the same as a free trial.” A store-price promotion does not enroll you in recurring billing; a subscription trial can.
- “Every trial ends with a cancellation screen.” Google requires cancellation instructions to be disclosed, but the subscription renews automatically at the base-plan price unless you follow the stated cancellation process.
- “Everyone should see the same price.” Regional pricing, taxes, currency conversion and propagation delays can produce different displays.
- “A developer can make the same app paid again later.” Google’s rule for a permanent paid-to-free change says the original app identity cannot be switched back to paid.
- “A promo code and a trial are interchangeable.” A code can apply to an app, one-time product or subscription; its terms determine the result.
- “The sale ending proves I lost access.” The reviewed pricing guidance does not resolve post-sale entitlement, so check the account and current help pages instead of guessing.

What developers—and users—should keep in mind
Developers set app prices and promotion settings, while Google Play applies regional pricing and displays the resulting offer. Pricing templates stopped being available for managing products on October 27, 2025; developers must manage prices on individual products. For users, that means an old screenshot, cached search result or third-party description may not reflect the current offer. The listing, offer screen and subscription record are the authoritative places to check at the time you act.

Google’s pricing guidance also notes that local prices can reflect currency conversion, local pricing patterns and tax treatment. A developer may set regional prices rather than rely only on conversion. That is why a price comparison needs the country, account and date attached to it.

Can a promo code make an app free forever?
