When an Aadhaar holder dies, the Aadhaar number is not given to anyone else. UIDAI can deactivate the number after a death is reported and the death-registration details are validated, but deactivation is not the same as deleting every record. UIDAI’s explanatory guidance says holder data is not purged after Aadhaar is issued and that records support deduplication. Families can report a death through myAadhaar where the facility supports the State or Union Territory in which the death was registered.
What happens to the Aadhaar number?
The number itself is permanent to the identity to which it was issued. Section 4(1) of the Aadhaar Act states: “An Aadhaar number, issued to an individual shall not be re-assigned to any other individual.” A deceased person’s number therefore cannot later be recycled for a new enrolment.
UIDAI may change the number’s operational status to deactivated after it receives and validates death information. That status change is intended to prevent the deceased person’s Aadhaar from continuing as an active identity credential. It does not mean that every copy of every associated record has been erased from UIDAI systems.

Its public explanations also say that data collected after issuance is not purged and is used, among other purposes, for deduplication against future records. The public material does not set out a complete field-by-field retention schedule for data after death, so it would be inaccurate to promise either total deletion or a specific retention period.

Deactivation is different from deletion
What deactivation changes
Deactivation concerns the Aadhaar number’s active status. UIDAI can mark a number as belonging to a deceased person after matching the reported death information with the death-registering authority and the Aadhaar database. The number remains associated with the original holder and is not reassigned.
What the available guidance does not establish
The reviewed UIDAI material does not describe every post-death database operation, the retention period for each demographic or biometric field, or whether a particular downstream institution immediately removes its own records. Do not treat a deactivation notice as proof that all Aadhaar-related information has been destroyed.
The Aadhaar Act separately assigns UIDAI duties concerning maintaining, omitting and deactivating records. Sections 28 and 29 address security, confidentiality and restrictions on sharing information, including core biometric information. Those provisions establish privacy and handling obligations, but they do not create a publicly specified, complete post-death deletion timetable.

How a family member reports a death through myAadhaar
UIDAI announced a family death-reporting facility through myAadhaar on 26 November 2025. The announcement said the facility covered deaths registered in 25 States and Union Territories at that time, with integration for the remaining jurisdictions under way. Because that was a dated snapshot, check myAadhaar for the State or Union Territory where the death was registered rather than assuming that coverage is unchanged in 2026.
- Obtain the death certificate. Get the certificate from the authority responsible for registering the death. UIDAI’s announcement specifically recommends obtaining it before making the report.
- Check jurisdiction support. Confirm that the myAadhaar death-reporting option accepts the State or Union Territory in which the death was registered. The relevant jurisdiction is tied to the death registration, not simply to the family member’s current address.
- Authenticate as the reporting family member. Use the authentication flow on myAadhaar. The portal is intended to establish that the person submitting the report is an authenticated family member.
- Enter the deceased holder’s details. Supply the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, the Death Registration Number and the other demographic information requested by the portal.
- Submit for validation. UIDAI validates the submission by checking the death-registration details against information from the death-registering authority and the Aadhaar database.
- Wait for UIDAI’s outcome. A submission is not a guarantee that the number is automatically deactivated. UIDAI decides what further action is appropriate after validation, which may include deactivation.
Keep the death certificate and the submission details with the family’s estate records. They can help if UIDAI asks for clarification or if an institution later requires proof of death for a separate account or benefit procedure.
What Aadhaar deactivation does not automatically do
Aadhaar status and an institution’s own customer or beneficiary records are separate matters. The available UIDAI sources do not establish that deactivation automatically closes a bank account, stops a pension, cancels a subsidy, terminates insurance, ends a mobile connection or settles an inheritance claim.

After reporting the death, contact each relevant bank, pension authority, insurer, government scheme, employer, telecom provider or other institution and follow its stated process. Those organisations may require the death certificate, nominee or legal-heir documents, probate or succession documents, and their own account identifiers. Do not assume that an Aadhaar status change substitutes for those procedures.

Why the official position changed over time
Older government statements should be read with their dates. A 5 April 2023 Lok Sabha answer said there was then no mechanism for death registrars to transmit deceased holders’ Aadhaar numbers to UIDAI for deactivation. That described the process at that time; it does not describe the later myAadhaar facility.
UIDAI subsequently introduced reporting and validation arrangements, expanded the use of death-registration data and documented a remedy for people whose numbers were wrongly marked as deceased. The chronology matters when comparing an old article with the current portal.

What if a living person is marked deceased by mistake?
UIDAI Circular 02/2025 provides a route for a living holder to challenge an incorrect deactivation. The remedy is handled through UIDAI offices rather than by submitting a new enrolment.
- Apply to UIDAI. Contact the nearest UIDAI Regional or State Office by post, email or in person, explaining that the Aadhaar number belongs to a living holder and requesting reactivation.
- Provide supporting information. The office can ask for documents or other details needed to investigate the alleged mismatch between the death report and the holder’s identity.
- Attend supervised biometric verification if directed. UIDAI may call the holder to submit full biometrics at a designated Aadhaar centre under the supervision of a UIDAI official.
- Await the decision. The circular says UIDAI will communicate its decision within 30 days after the holder submits the requested biometrics. The 30-day period is tied to biometric submission; it is not a promise that every case will be resolved within 30 days of the first email or letter.
Do not attempt to solve a mistaken-deactivation case by enrolling for a second Aadhaar number. The law prohibits reassignment and the system is designed around one number for an individual. Use the documented office process so UIDAI can investigate the death-record match and restore the correct status if the report was wrong.

The Aadhaar framework continues to protect information even though the holder is deceased. The Aadhaar Act’s confidentiality and security provisions restrict disclosure and impose controls on core biometric information. A death report does not make the person’s Aadhaar data public, and a family member’s ability to report a death does not grant general access to the deceased person’s biometric information.

At the same time, the public explanations do not say that all data is erased once a number is deactivated. UIDAI describes retaining holder data for deduplication, a function that helps prevent a second Aadhaar being created for the same person. That is why “the number was deactivated” and “the data was deleted” should not be used interchangeably.
Common misunderstandings
- “The number becomes available for another person.” It does not. The Aadhaar Act expressly prohibits reassignment.
- “Submitting a death report instantly deactivates the number.” UIDAI validates the report before taking further action; submission alone is not proof of deactivation.
- “Deactivation erases the Aadhaar record.” UIDAI says holder data is not purged after issuance and uses records for deduplication.
- “Aadhaar deactivation closes every account linked to Aadhaar.” Banks, pension systems, schemes and other institutions maintain their own records and processes.
- “The 25-State/Union Territory figure is a permanent coverage list.” It was the status reported on 26 November 2025. Portal availability can change, so verify the jurisdiction at the time of reporting.
- “An old 2023 answer proves that reporting is still impossible.” That answer predates the later myAadhaar facility and subsequent UIDAI announcements.
What families should record
For a clean administrative trail, retain the death certificate, Death Registration Number, the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, the date and jurisdiction of death registration, and any confirmation or reference generated by myAadhaar. Keep copies securely and share them only with organisations that have a legitimate reason to process the estate or benefit claim.
If the portal does not support the relevant jurisdiction, do not invent a registration number or submit a mismatched State or Union Territory. Check the current myAadhaar instructions and ask the death-registering authority or the concerned institution which channel is available. The published UIDAI material confirms the online route for supported jurisdictions but does not establish a universal alternative procedure for every unsupported one.

The practical answer
After a holder dies, Aadhaar is treated as an identity record whose number must not be reused. A validated death report can lead UIDAI to deactivate that number, while UIDAI’s own guidance indicates that underlying holder data is not simply purged. Families should report through myAadhaar where available, then handle banks, pensions, benefits and other accounts through each organisation’s separate death-notification process. If a living person is wrongly marked deceased, UIDAI Circular 02/2025 provides an office-and-biometric route to seek correction.
