When a game is delisted from Steam, new customers normally can no longer buy it from the store, but people who already own it usually keep it in their Steam libraries and can download, install, and launch it. The important exception is online functionality: matchmaking, cloud-backed progression, or other hosted features can disappear when the developer shuts down the required servers. Delisting also does not automatically create a refund right; Steam’s standard refund rules continue to apply unless Valve or the developer announces a special arrangement.
What “delisted” means on Steam
Valve’s formal term is usually retired. In its Steamworks retirement documentation, Valve explains that a retired product is removed from Steam’s store listings. The game’s store page can remain reachable, but it is no longer presented as a normal product that new customers can purchase.
That store change affects discovery and sales, not automatically the licenses already attached to customer accounts. A delisting is therefore different from deleting every copy of a game or revoking every owner’s entitlement.
What changes immediately
- The title disappears from ordinary store browsing, search results, or purchasing flows, depending on how the retirement was handled.
- The game’s Steam store page may still be visible, including its description and community links.
- New purchases through Steam are normally disabled.
- The developer may also stop selling keys elsewhere as part of the retirement process.
What does not normally change for owners
Valve states: “Retired games will remain in players’ Steam libraries. Those players will continue to be able to download, install, and launch the game.” That is the normal outcome for an account that already owns the title. It is not a promise that every account, payment, operating system, or online service will work forever; those are separate issues.

Can an existing owner still download and install it?
Usually, yes. Open Steam, go to Library, select the delisted game, and choose Install. If the title is already installed, Steam should continue to show the normal launch option. The retirement of the store listing does not by itself remove the game from your library or block the ordinary download process.
- Sign in to the Steam account that purchased or activated the game.
- Open Library and search for the title. Use the Games filter if it is hidden by another collection or category.
- Select the game and click Install. Choose a library folder with enough free disk space.
- After installation, click Play. Steam may need to download the game’s current depot files before starting it.
Valve’s retirement policy confirms download, installation, and launch access for retired games. It does not promise that the developer will publish future patches, that every old build will remain compatible with future versions of Windows or other operating systems, or that abandoned third-party dependencies will continue to function.
If the game is missing from your library
First verify that you are using the account that owns the license and that the title is not hidden. Check View > Hidden Games, then review Help > Steam Support > Purchases for the transaction. A delisting alone should not erase a valid ownership record. If the purchase is absent, contact Steam Support with the original transaction details rather than buying a replacement key.
Can you still play a delisted game?
You can generally play the installed game, but “play” has two different meanings: running the software on your device and connecting to services operated by the developer. The first normally survives a delisting; the second depends on the title’s servers and backend systems.

Offline and local modes
A fully offline campaign, local multiplayer mode, or other self-contained feature can continue working after the store listing disappears. The exact result depends on the game’s design, copy-protection checks, and whether it requires an online sign-in at launch. Do not assume that every game becomes permanently playable offline just because it remains in your library.
Online matchmaking and hosted progression
Online play can stop when the developer retires matchmaking servers, account services, leaderboards, inventories, or other backend functions. The game may still launch and display your library entitlement while network-dependent features fail.
A clear example is the developer announcement for Nubs! Arena dated July 7, 2026. The developer said that once its servers went offline, online matchmaking and online-specific achievements would no longer be available, while owners could still download the game from their Steam libraries and play locally with friends. That is a game-specific outcome, not a universal Steam promise; read the title’s own shutdown notice for the exact date and remaining modes.
Cloud saves, accounts, and other services
Features such as cloud saves, account authentication, seasonal content, inventories, or persistent characters may rely on systems outside Steam. Steam can continue delivering the game files even when those systems are gone. Before uninstalling a delisted title, export local saves or back up the game’s save directory if the developer documents where it is stored.

Does a delisting remove updates or the installed copy?
Not automatically. A retirement notice is about store availability and ownership access. Valve’s published policy confirms that owners can download, install, and launch the retired product, but it does not guarantee a continuing update schedule or indefinite compatibility with future hardware and operating systems.
Steam may still deliver files that the developer leaves on its depots. However, an abandoned game can remain on its last build, lose access to a required service, or stop working after an operating-system change. Treat long-term preservation as a separate question from whether the license remains in your library.
Can you get a refund after delisting?
A delisting does not automatically qualify every owner for a refund. Valve says that “All purchases are covered by the normal Steam refund policy,” while also noting that it may extend refunds in particular circumstances.

The page was last updated April 23, 2024. Requests outside those limits can still be submitted for review, but approval is discretionary rather than guaranteed.

How to submit a request
- Open Steam’s Help menu and choose Steam Support, or visit the Steam Support website.
- Select Purchases and choose the delisted game’s transaction.
- Choose the refund option, select the reason, and submit the request.
- If the game’s developer or Valve announced a special refund window, include that information and follow the instructions in the announcement.
Do not assume that a server shutdown creates an automatic exception. Look for a dated announcement from the developer or Steam that states the eligibility dates, playtime conditions, and refund method.
What about a Steam key bought somewhere else?
A third-party key is not a guaranteed replacement for a delisted Steam listing. Valve’s developer guidance says that developers should retire Steam keys from other stores when a product is retired. Availability, activation, and legitimacy can therefore vary by seller and by the key’s status.
Valve also says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys. If you bought a key from another retailer, contact that retailer for support and keep your receipt. Avoid treating an unofficial marketplace listing as evidence that the game is still supported or that the seller can provide a valid, refundable license.

How to check one specific delisted game
General policy tells you what normally happens, but it cannot establish the current state of every title. Use this checklist before uninstalling or buying a key.

- Open the game’s Steam page. A visible page may show that the title is no longer available for purchase, but page visibility alone does not prove that servers are operating.
- Read the developer’s latest announcement. Look for a server-shutdown date, an explanation of remaining local or offline modes, and any special refund instructions.
- Check your Library. Confirm that the title appears under the owning account and that Steam offers Install or Play.
- Test non-network features while services are available. Start the campaign or local mode and verify that saves load. Do not wait until after a scheduled shutdown to discover that a required sign-in has been removed.
- Record what depends on the backend. Note whether matchmaking, achievements, cloud saves, inventories, or progression require the developer’s servers.
- Review refund eligibility before playing more. Additional playtime can affect the normal two-hour threshold, so submit a request promptly if your circumstances fit Steam’s policy or a published exception.
Examples of why the details matter
Seeking Evil: The Wendigo
In a developer statement about its July 21, 2025 delisting, the creators said existing owners retained access. This illustrates the ordinary distinction between removing a game from sale and removing it from owners’ libraries. It does not establish how every other delisted title will behave.
Nubs! Arena
The July 7, 2026 announcement for Nubs! Arena separates the license from the service: owners could continue downloading the game and playing locally, while online matchmaking and online-only achievements would end when the servers shut down. This is the model to look for in a game-specific notice: identify which modes are local, which are hosted, and the exact service end date.
Practical steps for preserving access
- Keep the game on the Steam account that originally purchased or activated it; do not rely on a newly created account or an unverified key.
- Install the title before a known server shutdown if you need to test local or offline play.
- Back up local saves and configuration files when the developer documents their locations.
- Save important developer announcements, especially dates for service termination and special refunds.
- Expect online-only content, cloud features, and persistent progression to be the least durable parts of the game.
- Do not confuse a visible Steam page with active sales, active servers, or ongoing updates.
The bottom line for owners and prospective buyers
For an existing owner, a Steam delisting usually changes where the game can be bought, not whether it appears in the Library: Valve says owners can continue to download, install, and launch retired games. The risk is the surrounding service layer. Multiplayer, cloud-backed progression, and other hosted functions can disappear independently when the developer’s servers shut down. Refunds remain subject to Steam’s normal rules unless a specific exception is published, and an outside key is neither an official Steam-store alternative nor refundable by Valve.
