When a creator or management team buys a game studio back, decision-making can move away from the former parent company and back to the people running the studio. That can restore control over creative direction, hiring, spending and operations, but it does not automatically transfer every game right, preserve every job or guarantee that a project will ship.
The transaction documents decide the outcome. A useful analysis therefore asks five separate questions: which decisions moved, which intellectual-property rights moved, what happened to staff, how development will be financed and published, and what games the newly independent company intends to make.
What a studio buyback changes first
A buyback is an ownership transaction, not a single creative event. A founder, studio head or management group may purchase the business from a publisher or parent company and operate it as a separate company. The practical result depends on the negotiated scope of the deal and on the cash available after closing.

Toys for Bob studio head Paul Yan described the aim in those terms. PC Gamer reported on June 10, 2026 that the proposal sought to recover “creative control, organisational control, financial control” and spin the studio out as a separate company. In practical terms, those categories can cover the games the studio chooses to make, its staffing and reporting structure, its budget priorities and the commitments it makes to outside partners.

Legal separation does not mean every decision becomes unconstrained. An independent studio can still owe money to lenders, work under a publishing agreement, license another company’s characters or depend on milestone payments. Independence describes who owns and governs the company; it does not promise unlimited cash or total freedom from contracts.
Staff continuity is a negotiated result
Employees do not automatically transfer simply because a studio changes owners. The buyer must decide which employment contracts, benefits, offices and teams continue, while employees may choose whether to join the new company.
Yan said Toys for Bob wanted to preserve its team and the tenure it had built. That is a stated objective in this transaction, not a rule for buybacks generally. In Amplitude’s case, co-founder and CEO Romain de Waubert de Genlis said avoiding redundancies was one of the conditions presented to Sega. These examples show why a buyback announcement should be read alongside its staffing commitments rather than treated as proof that every job is protected.
Does buying a studio back include the rights to its games?
No. Studio ownership and intellectual-property ownership are separate questions. A transaction can sell a company while leaving a publisher with the rights to characters, game code, trademarks, sequels or distribution agreements. The buyer might receive all of those assets, some of them, or only the ability to develop new work under a license.

Amplitude provides a clear example of an explicit IP condition. De Waubert de Genlis told GamesMarkt in an interview published September 22, 2025: “We wanted to keep the IPs and the games so that we could continue working with our players and the community. There also had to be no redundancies.” His account says retaining the games and IP was part of the negotiation with Sega.
The Toys for Bob reporting does not specify the legal ownership terms for Spyro. PC Gamer identifies Spyro: Reignited Trilogy as a previous Toys for Bob game and reports that the independent studio is making a new original Spyro game, but that coverage does not establish who owns the Spyro rights or what license applies. It would therefore be inaccurate to infer that buying the studio automatically bought the franchise.
What to look for in the documents
- Existing game IP: ownership of the game, characters, worlds, names and trademarks.
- Development materials: source code, art, tools, build systems and technical documentation.
- Future rights: sequel, remake, expansion, platform and merchandising rights.
- Licenses and restrictions: rights that remain with a former parent or another licensor, including approval requirements.
- Distribution agreements: who can sell, update or delist existing releases.
Unless the buyer or a contract filing confirms these points, an announcement about independence is not enough to answer them.

How a buyback can change the games a studio makes
Restored control can alter a studio’s project mix. A parent company may have assigned support work to a large live-service or franchise project, while the independent team may prefer a particular genre, audience or production scale.

Toys for Bob: returning to preferred creative work
PC Gamer reported that Toys for Bob had supported larger Activision initiatives including Call of Duty: Warzone and Overwatch 2. Yan said that work was not what the studio loved or was best known for. The buyback plan was linked to changes surrounding Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard and layoffs in 2024, and it emphasized recovering control while preserving the team’s accumulated experience.
After becoming independent, the studio announced a new original Spyro game, according to PC Gamer. That announcement demonstrates a change in declared creative direction; it does not, by itself, reveal the project’s release date, budget, staffing level or IP contract.
Amplitude: concentrating on 4X strategy
Amplitude became independent from Sega in November 2024 through a management buyout, according to de Waubert de Genlis. He said the studio felt no longer aligned with Sega and feared losing talent. The negotiation took about a year. After the separation, he described a renewed focus on 4X strategy: “Once we were finally independent, we could focus on 4X. It’s all about strategy. We wanted to focus on that because it’s in our DNA.”
The change illustrates that independence can be used to narrow a company’s identity rather than expand it. A studio may choose fewer projects, return to a known genre and reject work that does not fit its strengths. That is a strategic choice, not evidence that every independent studio will make the same kind of game it made before acquisition.

How the independent studio pays for development and release
Ownership does not remove commercial risk. The new company must pay salaries, keep technology and facilities running, finish a project and reach players. It may use founder capital, investment, loans, grants, revenue from existing games or a publishing advance; the sources for these two cases do not disclose their financing amounts or ownership percentages.
Publishers can remain part of the plan
Amplitude selected Hooded Horse to publish Endless Legend 2. De Waubert de Genlis said the arrangement allowed the team to focus on making games rather than selling them. This is a reminder that an independent studio can still rely on a publisher for marketing, distribution, platform relationships, milestone funding or commercial expertise. Independence from a former parent is not the same as self-publishing.
A publishing agreement also creates obligations. Milestones, budgets, launch windows, approval rights and revenue sharing can limit practical freedom even when the studio owns itself. Readers should distinguish the legal owner of the studio from the party financing and releasing a particular game.

De Waubert de Genlis also said Amplitude needed to remain careful and concentrate on what it was known for. That caution matters because a buyback can reduce access to a large parent’s shared services, marketing budget and emergency cash. A smaller slate and a familiar genre may lower execution risk, but neither guarantees a commercial hit.

What the outcome means for different people
For players
- Check whether the announcement names the owner of the game and its characters, not only the owner of the studio.
- Expect a possible change in genre, release cadence or platform strategy when the team regains creative control.
- Do not treat a newly announced project as a ship date or a guarantee that an existing game will receive updates.
- Look for the named publisher and distribution partner, because those companies may control marketing, storefront release and launch timing.
For employees
- Ask which legal entity will employ you and whether your service date, benefits and accrued rights carry over.
- Confirm whether your team, role and location are included in the new company’s operating plan.
- Review how funding milestones and publisher approvals could affect staffing later in development.
- Separate a leadership promise to preserve the team from a binding employment guarantee.
For business partners
- Verify who can sign contracts and who owns the assets being licensed.
- Check whether the former parent retains approval, audit, distribution or reversion rights.
- Identify the party responsible for milestone payments, marketing commitments and support after launch.
- Confirm that the buyer has enough runway to meet the obligations it is accepting.
Common misconceptions about creator buybacks
“Independent” means completely free of outside influence
It usually means the studio is no longer controlled by its former parent. A publisher, lender, licensor or platform holder can still shape a project through a contract.
The creator automatically owns every game the studio made
IP must be listed or transferred separately. Amplitude’s reported negotiation specifically sought to retain its games and IP; the Toys for Bob report does not provide equivalent Spyro ownership details.
A buyback guarantees jobs
Staffing depends on the deal and the new company’s budget. Amplitude’s no-redundancy condition and Toys for Bob’s stated preservation goal are examples of negotiated intentions, not a general legal protection.

Returning to a studio’s roots guarantees success
Genre focus can improve strategic fit, but the available accounts provide no general statistic showing that buybacks succeed more often, save a particular number of jobs or produce commercial hits. De Waubert de Genlis reported that Humankind had reached 3.5 million players and that Humankind and Endless Space together had around 250,000 monthly players at the time of his 2025 interview; those are company leader statements, not independently verified measures of buyback success.
The practical test for whether a buyback worked
The meaningful test is not the announcement of independence. It is whether the new company has the rights, people, money and decision authority required to make and support the games it wants to create. Compare the stated control recovered with the signed IP terms, staff arrangements, funding and publishing plan. In the two reported examples, Toys for Bob emphasized creative and organizational freedom while returning toward a familiar character, and Amplitude paired retained games and staff conditions with a focused 4X strategy and an external publishing partner. Those details—not the word “independent” alone—explain what actually changed.
