A galaxy can exist, grow and form stars without a central supermassive black hole. Its stars, gas, dust, dark matter and gravitational structure do not depend on a black hole being present. The main difference is the loss of one possible feedback engine: an accreting black hole cannot launch its jets and outflows, so in environments where those jets normally heat or expel gas, more gas may cool and form stars. That is a conditional outcome, not a universal rule.

A black hole is not what holds a galaxy together

A galaxy is a gravitationally bound system made primarily of stars, gas, dust and dark matter. Gravity among those components determines its overall structure and keeps stars in orbit. A central supermassive black hole can influence the nucleus and the surrounding gas, but it is not the object that supplies all of a galaxy’s gravity or makes the galaxy a galaxy.

Removing a central black hole from a hypothetical galaxy would therefore not make the stellar disk disappear, unbind its dark-matter halo or cause every star to fall toward the center. The galaxy could continue to rotate, merge with neighbors, accrete gas and form stars through the same broad processes that operate elsewhere. Its nucleus could still contain dense stars, stellar remnants, gas clouds or a compact concentration of matter; “no central supermassive black hole” does not mean “an empty center.”

The major missing ingredient would be energy released by gas falling into a black hole. If no black hole is present, there is no black-hole-powered active galactic nucleus, and no jets or outflows driven by that engine. Whether that changes the galaxy’s long-term star-formation history depends on how important black-hole feedback would have been in that particular mass range and environment.

What observations say about which galaxies have black holes

A 2025 NASA summary of a Chandra X-ray analysis examined more than 1,600 galaxies using observations collected over more than two decades. The study estimated that only about 30% of dwarf galaxies likely contain supermassive black holes, whereas more than 90% of massive galaxies, including galaxies comparable in mass to the Milky Way, show evidence for them.

The same analysis found that galaxies below roughly three billion solar masses usually lacked bright central X-ray sources. X-rays can reveal an actively accreting black hole, but a quiet or weakly fed black hole may be too faint for Chandra to detect. The researchers therefore allowed for the possibility that some low-mass galaxies contain undetected black holes and then compared the observed shortage with the faintness expected from smaller black holes. Their conclusion was that faint accretion alone did not explain the deficit.

Galaxy population or measurement Study-level result How to interpret it
Dwarf galaxies About 30% likely contain supermassive black holes An estimate from the Chandra-based analysis, not a census of every dwarf galaxy
Massive galaxies, including Milky-Way-mass systems More than 90% show evidence for central supermassive black holes Evidence is much more common in the high-mass population
Galaxies below about three billion solar masses Usually lacked bright central X-ray sources A bright-source threshold; a faint or inactive black hole could remain invisible
Survey scale More than 1,600 galaxies observed across over two decades of Chandra data A large observational sample, but still subject to detection limits and selection effects

These percentages describe what the study inferred, using the evidence available in X-rays. “No detected X-ray source” is not automatically proof that a black hole does not exist. The strongest conclusion is statistical: black holes appear to be substantially less common in dwarf galaxies than in massive galaxies, while a quiet population may still be hidden below the detection threshold.

What disappears when the central black hole is truly absent

No accretion-powered nucleus

An active galactic nucleus forms when material accretes onto a central black hole and releases enormous amounts of energy. A galaxy with no central black hole cannot produce that particular kind of nucleus. It may still contain bright stellar sources, supernova remnants, hot gas or other forms of radiation, but those are not substitutes for a black-hole accretion engine.

No black-hole jets or outflows

Accreting black holes can launch narrow relativistic jets and broader outflows. Those structures transport energy and momentum far beyond the immediate nucleus. In a black-hole-free galaxy, that channel is absent by definition. Stellar winds, supernovae and radiation from young stars can still drive gas out of star-forming regions, so the galaxy does not lose every mechanism capable of moving or heating gas.

No black-hole feedback loop

In systems where cooling gas normally feeds a central black hole, the associated jets can push against surrounding gas and reheat it. Without the black hole, that particular loop cannot operate. The consequence is not automatically “unlimited star formation,” because the amount of gas available, the galaxy’s gravity, stellar feedback and its external environment continue to set limits.

How black-hole feedback can regulate star formation

The clearest documented example in the supplied evidence concerns very massive galaxies at the centers of galaxy clusters. NASA’s 2015 Chandra report describes a repeating cycle:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Hot gas begins to cool. Gas in the cluster-center environment can lose heat and condense into cooler clouds.
  2. Some cooled gas forms stars. Part of the material reaches the conditions needed for star formation.
  3. Some gas reaches the black hole. Another fraction falls toward the central black hole and feeds accretion.
  4. Accretion powers jets. The black hole launches jets that push into the surrounding gas.
  5. The jets reheat or displace gas. Heating and mechanical disturbance reduce the amount of gas that can continue cooling into new stars.

In that specific setting, black-hole activity acts as a regulating feedback mechanism rather than simply an additional source of light. MIT researcher Michael McDonald summarized the cluster-center implication as: “Without these black holes and their jets, the central galaxies of galaxy clusters would have many more stars than they do today.” The statement applies to central cluster galaxies, where hot-gas cooling and jet heating are especially important; it is not a prediction for every spiral, dwarf or isolated galaxy.

A broader Nature review describes the same physical idea: even a small fraction of the energy released by a growing black hole, if absorbed by its host, could heat or eject ambient gas and suppress star formation. The review also treats the strength of this explanation for the low star-formation rates of massive elliptical galaxies as an open question. Observed correlations between black-hole mass and galaxy properties are strong, but the precise quantitative coupling between black-hole growth and galaxy growth is not fully established.

Why the result depends on galaxy mass and environment

Dwarf galaxies

Dwarf galaxies are the population in which central black holes appear least common in the Chandra analysis. Their shallow gravitational potential wells also make it easier for stellar winds and supernova explosions to heat or remove gas. If a dwarf has no black hole, the missing jet may have little additional effect because stellar processes and the galaxy’s limited gas supply may already dominate its evolution. Another dwarf could behave differently if it retains a large reservoir of cool gas or experiences a gas-rich interaction.

Massive but non-cluster galaxies

A massive spiral or elliptical may contain enough gas for black-hole feedback to matter, but the strength and timing of that feedback can vary. A black hole that is present but starved may contribute little at a given time. Conversely, an episode of rapid accretion could heat or expel gas temporarily. Removing the black hole eliminates that possible episode, yet the galaxy can still regulate star formation through supernovae, stellar winds, radiation, mergers and changes in gas inflow.

Central galaxies in clusters

Cluster-center galaxies are the case in which the counterfactual is most consequential in the available evidence. Their surrounding hot atmospheres can cool over time, creating a continuing supply of gas that would otherwise feed both stars and the central black hole. Without jet heating, cooling could proceed more efficiently, potentially increasing the amount of cold gas and the rate of star formation. The exact increase cannot be stated as a universal number because it depends on the cluster atmosphere, gas supply and competing feedback processes.

Galaxies undergoing interactions

Mergers and close encounters can drive gas inward, compress clouds and trigger bursts of star formation. They can also rearrange a galaxy’s structure independently of whether a central black hole exists. A black-hole-free galaxy can therefore experience major growth or a starburst through gravitational interactions alone. The absence of a black hole removes one response to the inflowing gas; it does not stop the interaction itself.

“No black hole” is different from “no black-hole signal”

Three situations are often confused:

  • Absent: No central supermassive black hole exists. There can be no accretion-powered nucleus or black-hole jet from that location.
  • Present but inactive: A black hole exists but is receiving too little gas to shine brightly. It may produce no detectable jet or only weak activity at the time of observation.
  • Present but undetected: A black hole may be hidden because its accretion is faint, obscured or below the sensitivity of the instrument being used.

Chandra’s X-ray measurements are particularly useful for finding active accretion, not for proving that every quiet nucleus is empty. That is why the dwarf-galaxy percentage is reported as “likely,” and why the study compared the observed deficit with the faintness expected from smaller black holes before inferring that many galaxies may genuinely lack one.

Would a neutron star replace the black hole?

No. A neutron star is a possible stellar remnant, not a required substitute for a galactic center. A galaxy’s center is a region defined by its mass distribution and gravitational potential, not a job that must be filled by one compact object. A nucleus can contain many stars, stellar remnants, gas and dark matter without containing a single dominant black hole.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neutron stars can emit radiation, produce magnetic activity and participate in binaries, but those phenomena do not reproduce the large-scale accretion feedback associated with a supermassive black hole. Replacing a hypothetical central black hole with one neutron star would not preserve the same mass, energy output or gravitational influence.

What would an astronomer expect to observe?

A black-hole-free galaxy would still show ordinary galactic signatures: stars on organized orbits, gas clouds, dust, stellar birth and death, and a dark-matter halo. Depending on its history, it could have a disk, a spheroidal shape, a bar, tidal tails or a disturbed morphology. None of those features requires a central supermassive black hole.

The missing signatures would be specifically associated with an accreting central engine. Astronomers would not expect a persistent black-hole X-ray source, a jet emerging from that nucleus or an outflow whose energy can be traced to black-hole accretion. They would then compare other evidence—stellar motions, radio emission, gas dynamics and the galaxy’s environment—to determine whether the lack of a bright source reflects true absence or simply a quiet, weakly fed object.

Open questions that prevent a single prediction

  • How often do black holes form in dwarf galaxies, and what seed objects produce them?
  • How many low-mass black holes remain hidden because their accretion is too faint for current X-ray surveys?
  • At what galaxy mass does black-hole feedback become a dominant regulator rather than a secondary effect?
  • How much gas would remain available for star formation if jet heating were removed from a particular cluster atmosphere?
  • How do mergers, gas inflows, stellar feedback and environment interact with black-hole activity over cosmic time?

Those questions are why the absence of a central black hole should be treated as a change in one feedback channel, not as a simple switch that determines the entire fate of a galaxy. The best-supported answer is conditional: the galaxy can survive and evolve, while some systems—especially massive cluster-center galaxies—could cool more gas and form more stars without black-hole jets.
