When crypto prices move faster than your order can be matched, the execution price can differ from the quote you saw. A market order may fill across several order-book levels; a limit order may wait or fill only partly; and a stop order can trigger without filling at its trigger price. The outcome is governed by your order type, available liquidity, order size, the speed of the move and the trading venue’s rules.
Slippage is the gap between the expected and actual price
Slippage is the difference between the price you expected when submitting an order and the prices at which it actually executed. Coinbase defines it this way in its help guidance. Slippage can be unfavorable, making a purchase more expensive or a sale less profitable, but it can also be favorable if the market moves in your direction before matching completes.
The displayed price is therefore an indication, not a promise. A chart’s last-traded price, a quote shown in an order ticket and the price of your eventual fill can all differ because they describe different moments or parts of the order book.

An order book lists buy orders (bids) and sell orders (asks), each with a price and an available quantity. A market order tells the venue to seek execution immediately against the liquidity currently available; it does not specify one exact price.

Suppose an illustrative buy order meets 0.4 coin offered at $100 and another 0.6 coin offered at $101. A one-coin market order would be filled at both levels, producing an average above $100. If sellers pull their orders or prices jump while the order is being processed, the next available levels may be still higher. The same process works in reverse for a market sell: once the highest bid is exhausted, the remaining quantity can match lower bids.
Coinbase’s trading rules state that market orders may execute at multiple prices depending on order size and available quantities, and can execute significantly away from the most recent trade. During a rapid move, orders at the best displayed price may disappear before your order reaches them, leaving less favorable levels as the only available liquidity.
What happens from submission to settlement during a rapid move
- You submit an instruction. The order ticket records the asset, side, quantity and order type. The quote visible at this moment is only a snapshot of available prices.
- The venue validates the order. It checks balances, product rules and any applicable price or risk controls. These checks can take place while the market continues moving.
- The matching engine searches the book. A market order consumes matching bids or asks, starting at the most favorable available level and moving through additional levels when the first level lacks enough quantity.
- Fills are reported. If several levels were used, the platform normally reports individual fills and an average execution price. The average can be better or worse than the initial quote.
- Any remainder is handled under the order’s rules. A market order can complete immediately if liquidity is sufficient, while a limit or stop-limit order can leave an unfilled remainder resting on the book or expire according to the venue’s settings.
Fast price movement increases the chance that the book changes between each stage. No general market-wide percentage describes how much slippage is typical; the result depends on the specific asset, venue, timing, size and available liquidity.

A market order is designed for immediacy. It asks the venue to execute against available liquidity rather than wait for a particular price. That can be useful when entering or exiting matters more than knowing the exact price, but it exposes you to multiple levels and a changing book.

- What it controls: a request for immediate execution, subject to available liquidity and venue controls.
- What it does not control: one guaranteed price. The final result can differ from the last trade or the quote shown when you clicked submit.
- During a fast move: a larger order is more likely to consume several levels. A sudden withdrawal of liquidity can increase the distance between the first and last fill.
- How to inspect it afterward: review each fill and the reported average price rather than relying on a single headline quote.
Coinbase says its interface displays a slippage and average-price estimate for market orders. That is a feature of that interface, not a universal requirement for every exchange or product.
Limit orders: price boundary, uncertain execution
A limit order specifies the worst price you will accept. A buy limit can execute only at its limit price or lower; a sell limit can execute only at its limit price or higher. This boundary prevents the order from crossing into prices you reject, but it does not force the market to provide a fill.
- No fill: if the market moves away before matching your price, the order can remain open indefinitely or expire under its time-in-force setting.
- Partial fill: if only part of the requested quantity is available at your price, that portion executes and the remainder stays open or becomes unfilled.
- Fast-market trade-off: a limit protects price but can leave you out of the market while prices run away. Canceling and replacing it at a new price introduces another timing decision.
Coinbase’s order-management guidance describes this price-versus-execution trade-off and the possibility of partial fills. A limit price is not a guarantee that the entire order will execute.
Stops and stop-limits: a trigger is not a fill promise
A stop order becomes active when a specified trigger condition is reached. Depending on the product, the triggered order may become a market order or a limit order. A stop-limit adds a limit boundary after triggering, so it can protect against execution beyond that boundary but may fail to fill if the market gaps past it.

Do not treat the stop price as a guaranteed execution price. Coinbase’s guidance for its U.S. derivatives service explains that when a market opens after a closed period beyond the trigger, a stop can execute at the available opening price. The difference between the trigger and that opening fill is slippage. This example is specific to that derivatives service and should not be generalized to every exchange, region or spot product.
Liquidity, order size and venue rules determine the result
Liquidity means how much buy and sell interest is available near the current price. Coinbase identifies liquidity and trading activity as important factors in slippage. A heavily traded market with substantial quantities near the midpoint can absorb a modest order with less price movement than a thin market. The same asset can behave differently on different venues because their order books and matching rules are separate.
- Order size: a quantity that fits at the best level may have little impact, while a larger quantity can sweep many levels.
- Market activity: when trading activity falls or orders are canceled, fewer prices may be available.
- Speed of movement: news or a sudden imbalance can change the book between quote, submission and matching.
- Product and region: spot, margin and derivatives products can use different protections, triggers and trading hours.
- Venue design: warnings, price bands, partial-fill handling and halts are platform-specific rather than universal crypto standards.
These factors interact. A small order in a deep book may experience little difference, while a large order in a thin book can receive a wide range of fills even if the visible quote barely changed before submission.

Protections can inform you, constrain an order or pause matching. They are not interchangeable, and they do not eliminate market risk.

A warning is information, a protection point can restrict execution, and a halt stops matching temporarily. Check the rules for the exact venue, product and region before relying on any threshold.
Choosing an order when the market is moving quickly

Decide which failure you can tolerate: paying or receiving an unexpected price, or missing the trade altogether. There is no order type that guarantees both immediate execution and an exact price.
Steps to reduce surprises before submitting
- Confirm the product and venue. Spot and derivatives services can use different triggers, protection points, price bands and halt rules.
- Inspect the order book. Look at the quantities available at successive prices, not only the last-traded price or midpoint.
- Compare quantity with nearby liquidity. If your order is larger than the displayed amount at the best level, expect multiple fills or reduce the size if that fits your plan.
- Read the ticket’s estimate and warnings. Where the platform provides an estimated average price or slippage warning, treat it as a current estimate that can change before matching.
- Choose the acceptable failure mode. Use a market instruction only when immediacy outweighs price precision; use a limit when avoiding prices beyond a boundary matters more than certainty of execution.
- Set and understand trigger behavior. For stops, verify whether triggering creates a market or limit order, what happens to a remainder and whether a gap scenario is addressed in the venue’s rules.
- Review fills after execution. Check the individual prices, quantities and average. This reveals whether the order crossed levels or completed only partially.
How to diagnose an unexpected result
The average price is worse than the quote
Check whether the order was a market order, whether its size consumed multiple levels and whether the book moved before matching. A warning based on the last trade can also differ from the final result because the reference price and available liquidity changed.

Only part of the order executed
For a limit or stop-limit, inspect the remaining quantity and its status. The market may not have offered enough quantity at your price, or it may have moved beyond the limit after the trigger. The remainder can stay open, expire or require cancellation according to the venue’s settings.

The stop filled away from its trigger
Determine the product and venue first. A gap can move the available opening price beyond the trigger, as described in Coinbase’s U.S. derivatives guidance. That policy does not establish how every other stop order works.
The order did not proceed during an extreme move
Look for a price-band message, protection-point message or trading-halt notice. A venue may pause matching or prevent execution beyond a defined range. These controls can delay execution; they do not convert a market order into a guaranteed-price order.
Common misconceptions
- “The chart price is my fill price.” Charts usually show trades that already occurred; your order must still find available opposing liquidity.
- “Market means the current price.” Market means execute against available orders. If the first level lacks quantity, the order can continue to the next levels.
- “A limit order always executes.” It executes only when the market reaches the limit with sufficient quantity, so it can remain open or be partial.
- “A stop guarantees the stop price.” Trigger and execution are separate events; a gap can produce a different fill, and a stop-limit can miss entirely.
- “A 2% warning is a market statistic.” Coinbase’s more-than-2% warning is a venue interface rule, not evidence that crypto trades normally slip by 2% or less.
- “A halt removes the risk.” A halt pauses matching under a stated rule. Prices and available liquidity can be different when trading resumes.
Bottom line
A fast crypto move exposes the difference between seeing a price and securing an execution. Market orders favor speed and can sweep multiple levels; limit orders favor price control and can wait or fill partially; stop orders begin a new execution process after their trigger and can slip across a gap. Read the order book, compare your size with nearby liquidity, understand the venue’s product-specific safeguards and choose whether execution or price certainty matters more for that trade.
