When electricity gets more expensive, Bitcoin mining becomes less profitable for every machine that remains online. The operator compares the Bitcoin revenue expected from the next unit of electricity with that unit’s power price and other avoidable costs. If the margin turns negative, it can reduce the load, shut down some or all machines, or use a contractual curtailment program. A miner with a fixed-price power agreement may even earn more by returning electricity to the grid during a market-price spike than by mining with it.
There is no universal electricity price at which every mining operation shuts down. The decision depends on the site’s tariff or contract, hourly and locational prices, machine efficiency, Bitcoin’s value, network difficulty, cooling and facility costs, and the rules of the local grid program.
Why a power-price increase changes the mining decision
Electricity is a major variable cost because application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) miners consume power continuously while they are running. A higher rate raises the cost of producing the same amount of hashing power immediately. The operator’s relevant question is not simply whether the monthly bill increased; it is whether the next hour of operation is expected to generate more value than the costs that can be avoided by switching that hour off.

At the margin, expected mining revenue is affected by Bitcoin’s market value and by the network’s competition. When network difficulty or total hashrate rises, a machine generally earns less Bitcoin from the same electrical load. Equipment efficiency also matters: a newer machine can produce more hashes per kilowatt-hour than an older model, so two sites facing the same tariff can have different shutdown points. Cooling, staffing, hosting, and other facility expenses further change the amount that is actually avoidable when a machine is powered down.

For that reason, a reported average energy price should not be treated as a universal break-even rate. MARA Holdings reported an average direct energy price of $0.04 per kilowatt-hour at its owned facilities in both 2025 and 2024, yet its purchased energy cost per Bitcoin was $38,956 in 2025 versus $29,084 in 2024. The per-Bitcoin figures are purchased-energy costs, not an all-in cost to mine, and they reflect changes in network conditions and production as well as electricity.
The four operating responses to higher prices
Continue running
An operator can leave machines online when expected Bitcoin revenue exceeds the incremental electricity charge and other avoidable operating costs. This is most likely when the site has an efficient fleet, a favorable tariff, strong Bitcoin revenue, or a contract that keeps the effective energy price stable. Continuing to run is a marginal decision: a site may keep its most efficient machines online while turning off older units.
Curtail part or all of the load
Curtailment means temporarily reducing electricity use. The operator may shut down a portion of the fleet, lower the site’s load, or stop mining altogether for a period. MARA Holdings states in its 2025 Form 10-K: “When prices rise or supply is constrained, we may curtail our operations to avoid using power at increased rates.” Because electricity prices can change by hour and location, a curtailment decision can be operationally fast rather than a permanent closure.

A 2026 working paper using Texas as its empirical setting reports that mining load falls as electricity-sector costs rise. It also finds that the size of the response depends on hashprice, a measure of expected mining revenue per unit of hashrate. That result describes the relationship observed in that setting; it is not a shutdown rule for every country, market, or facility.
Return contracted power or claim grid credits
A fixed-price power agreement can create a different incentive during a wholesale-price spike. If the market value of electricity rises above the value the miner expects to earn from mining, returning the contracted power can be more profitable. Riot Platforms describes this arrangement in its 2026 Form 10-Q: “We power down operations and return power to the utility when prevailing market electricity prices offer the potential for us to realize power curtailment credits in excess of the Bitcoin Mining revenues we would have otherwise generated.”
In that case, the mining site is not merely avoiding a loss. It is comparing two uses of the same contracted electricity: consume it to produce Bitcoin, or release it under the contract and receive a credit or payment linked to market conditions. The availability, calculation, and timing of such credits are contract-specific.

Absorb the increase or change the operating plan
An operator may continue mining while accepting lower margins, seek different contract terms, change the hours in which it runs, or alter its site strategy. Whether renegotiation, relocation, or equipment replacement is practical depends on the agreement, permitting, interconnection, hardware inventory, and financing. A higher price alone does not establish that any one of those responses will be available or profitable.

Why two miners can react differently to the same price spike

These factors explain why a large industrial site and a small independent miner should not be given the same threshold. A contract that fixes the energy rate can insulate a site from a wholesale spike, while a spot-exposed site may face the increase immediately. Conversely, a fixed-price contract can have an opportunity cost if its terms allow the operator to return power and receive a valuable curtailment credit.
What company filings show about the cost exposure
Public-company disclosures illustrate the scale of the electricity burden, but they are not an industry-wide average. The figures below refer to named companies, facilities, and reporting periods.

MARA’s Q2 disclosure also shows why a higher bill cannot automatically be labeled a pure power-price effect: the company expanded sites and increased hashrate. Likewise, energy expense as a percentage of revenue can rise because revenue changes, costs change, or both.

Some large operators participate in demand-response or ancillary-service markets. Riot says it bids to sell ERCOT and MISO the option to control its load and describes credits that may be received whether or not it is actually called on to power down. Those payments can supplement mining revenue and make flexible load more valuable.

When evaluating a program, an operator must compare the foregone mining revenue during the controlled period with the credit, any energy cost avoided, and the operational consequences of stopping and restarting equipment. A credit that exceeds the otherwise available mining revenue can justify curtailment; a smaller credit may not.
A practical decision sequence for a price spike
- Measure the site’s effective price. Identify the applicable hourly tariff, index, demand charge, taxes, transmission components, and contract price rather than relying on a broad regional average.
- Estimate marginal mining revenue. Use the site’s current hashrate, machine efficiency, Bitcoin value, network difficulty, and expected uptime to estimate what the next unit of electricity is likely to produce.
- Include avoidable operating costs. Account for costs that actually fall when machines stop, such as electricity and any load-linked charges. Keep fixed staffing, hosting, and financing costs separate because they may continue during a curtailment.
- Check contractual alternatives. Determine whether the agreement permits load reduction, requires notice, provides a curtailment credit, or allows power to be returned to the utility.
- Compare operating choices by hour. Continue with the whole fleet, keep only the most efficient machines online, curtail, or return power when the contract makes that option more valuable than mining.
- Record the trigger and settlement. Track the price, expected mining margin, load reduction, credit calculation, and restart conditions so the decision can be audited and improved when conditions change.
This sequence is a framework, not a guaranteed procedure for every site. The actual trigger may be set by a utility contract, market dispatch instruction, or facility control system.
What “shutdown” really means in practice
A price-driven response is often temporary and selective. A site can curtail a subset of machines, preserve its newest and most efficient hardware, and resume when the price or contract economics change. A full shutdown is more likely when the negative margin persists, when supply is constrained, or when the site lacks a viable curtailment or demand-response alternative.

Those practical details are why a theoretical hourly break-even calculation may not map perfectly to the load actually dispatched.
Common misconceptions about rising power prices
- “There is one Bitcoin mining shutdown price.” No. The threshold moves with Bitcoin revenue, network difficulty, machine efficiency, avoidable costs, and the power agreement.
- “A $0.04/kWh average means every hour cost $0.04.” An annual or quarterly average can hide hourly, site-level, and contractual variation.
- “Every miner gets paid to curtail.” Riot reports curtailment credits and demand-response activity, while MARA says its curtailment is not significantly compensated.
- “Higher energy cost per Bitcoin proves electricity alone became more expensive.” Per-Bitcoin cost also changes with network difficulty, hashrate, production, and Bitcoin value.
- “Curtailment means the business has permanently failed.” It can be a deliberate, temporary response to an uneconomic hour or a valuable grid-market opportunity.
The operational takeaway
When power prices rise, Bitcoin miners re-price every operating hour. The least efficient machines are exposed first; some sites reduce load, some return contracted power for credits, and some continue operating when their expected mining margin remains positive. The decisive comparison is the value of mining with the next kilowatt-hour versus the cost or alternative value of that electricity under the site’s specific contract and grid rules.
