Before a browser can connect to bbc.com, it needs an IP address for the requested host. A DNS resolver may already have the answer in cache and return it immediately. If not, the resolver obtains missing information through DNS’s hierarchy—potentially from a root server, a .com server, and the domain’s authoritative server. That sequence describes a possible cold-cache lookup, not what happens on every visit.
First, the browser asks a resolver for address data
The browser or operating system uses a stub resolver to ask a configured recursive resolver for the DNS data needed to contact the requested host. DNS maps names to records; it does not itself open the page or choose the route that the browser’s later network traffic will take.
The exact address records for bbc.com, and the servers queried for them, can vary with the requested hostname, the resolver, and what information is already cached. No particular live lookup is implied by this explanation.

A cache hit can avoid upstream DNS queries
The recursive resolver checks whether it already has a usable answer. If so, it can return that answer without asking root, .com, or the domain’s authoritative servers for this lookup. It may also have cached delegation information—directions to the next level—so even a missing address record does not necessarily mean it must contact every level.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
DNS records have time-to-live (TTL) values that govern how long cached data can be reused. Once relevant data expires, the resolver may need to obtain fresh information. A cache hit is therefore conditional on the resolver’s cache contents and the data’s TTL, rather than a permanent shortcut.
A cold-cache lookup can follow referrals down the hierarchy
If the resolver lacks the answer and the needed delegation information, a cold-cache example for a name under .com can proceed in stages. Each referral points the recursive resolver toward the next authority; the root does not provide the site’s final address in this example.

- Root: The resolver asks a root server where to find the
.comnameservers. The root server returns a referral to the top-level domain’s servers. .com: The resolver asks a.comnameserver where to find the authoritative nameservers for the domain. It receives a referral to those domain-authoritative servers.- Domain authority: The resolver asks an authoritative server for the requested address record and receives the domain’s answer.
- Return and cache: The recursive resolver returns the answer to the client and caches DNS data for reuse according to its TTLs.
This is an illustration of a possible path, not a fixed itinerary. A resolver with cached referrals can skip earlier queries, and a resolver with the final answer can skip the hierarchy for that lookup. ICANN describes the hierarchy and referrals in its overview of the authoritative DNS root; its RSSAC FAQ explains caching, TTLs, and resolver interactions.

“13 root servers” means 13 named identities, not 13 machines
The phrase refers to 13 named root-server identities. ICANN says 12 independent operators manage those identities, which are served by more than 1,500 individual servers around the globe. The identities are not 13 competing services for a user to choose among.

- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.

These figures describe the root server system, not the number of root machines contacted during a particular visit to bbc.com. A lookup that can be answered from cache may not contact a root server at all. See ICANN’s Root Server System overview.
Resolvers can limit how much of a name they reveal upstream
Query Name Minimization (QNAME minimization) can reduce the amount of a queried name sent to upstream DNS servers. For example, a resolver may avoid sending the complete requested name when asking an earlier level for a referral. Whether this happens depends on resolver behavior; it should not be assumed that every resolver uses minimization or that every upstream server sees the same name. ICANN’s RSSAC FAQ and the IETF’s DNS privacy considerations discuss this context.

Most lookups do not necessarily reach the root
An ICANN Governmental Advisory Committee presentation from 2026 gives estimates that more than 90% of answers are returned from cache alone, about 5% require a domain-authoritative query, about 2% a TLD-authoritative query, and about 0.02% a root-system query. These are presentation estimates, not universal rates measured for every resolver, network, or visit. They illustrate why a hierarchical DNS system does not mean that every browser request climbs the entire hierarchy. The figures appear in the presentation RSSAC and the Root Server System, ICANN85.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDNS finishes before the browser can connect by IP
Once the client has an address from its resolver, it can use that address to begin contacting the destination. The DNS referrals are instructions for the recursive resolver to find DNS data; they do not determine the network route used by the browser to reach the site. Which DNS queries occurred before a specific visit depends on cache state and resolver behavior.
