A margin call means your brokerage account’s equity has fallen below a maintenance requirement. Contact your broker promptly: read the notice and margin agreement, confirm the exact amount and deadline, and ask whether the broker can liquidate positions before that deadline. There is no universal cure period, and a margin call does not guarantee the broker will wait for you to act.
If you are searching “What happens in a margin call and how to respond?”, the immediate priority is to establish what the broker says is deficient, what it will accept, and whether it has already started—or can start—selling assets. The right response depends on your account terms and circumstances; neither depositing more money nor selling a particular investment is automatically best for everyone.
What happens in a margin call?
A margin account lets you borrow money from a brokerage firm to buy securities, with the securities serving as collateral. Your account equity is the market value of the securities minus the amount you owe. If the market value falls far enough, your equity can drop below the broker’s maintenance requirement. The firm may then demand additional cash or eligible securities, or sell assets to bring the account back into compliance.

A decline in securities’ value can reduce equity even if you have not borrowed any more money. If the remaining equity falls below the level the firm requires, the account is deficient. A margin call is the firm’s demand that you address that deficiency; it is not simply a general warning that prices have fallen.

Maintenance requirements are not necessarily the same at every firm or for every security. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says the FINRA maintenance baseline it describes is at least 25% of the total market value of margin securities, while many firms require 30% to 40% or sometimes more depending on the security. A firm’s “house” requirement may be higher than the regulatory minimum and can change. Check your own account terms rather than assuming a threshold applies to you. SEC Investor Bulletin: Understanding Margin Accounts
These figures are context, not a guaranteed threshold for a particular account. A broker’s requirement may be different for a particular security, and broker materials do not establish one fixed house requirement or a universal rule for every account. The figure that matters to you is the requirement the broker is applying now, as reflected in your notice and account agreement. Ask the firm to identify that requirement and explain how it calculated the deficiency.
A simplified example
The SEC bulletin illustrates how a higher maintenance requirement can change the result. An investor buys $16,000 in securities using $8,000 of their own money and an $8,000 margin loan. If the securities fall to $12,000, equity is $4,000 ($12,000 market value minus $8,000 owed). At a 25% maintenance requirement, $3,000 of equity is required, so this example remains above the threshold. At 40%, $4,800 is required, leaving an $800 deficiency. These figures are an illustration from the SEC, not a prediction or an account-specific calculation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe arithmetic shows why a decline in the securities’ value does not, by itself, tell you whether a margin call exists. At the $12,000 market value in this example, the investor still has $4,000 in equity. If the applicable maintenance requirement is 25%, that is $1,000 more equity than the $3,000 required. If the applicable requirement is 40%, the required equity is $4,800, so the $4,000 falls short by $800. The same market value and loan balance can therefore produce different results under different maintenance requirements.
Do not use the example to calculate your own account’s call unless the broker confirms that the same method and requirement apply. Your actual securities, loan balance, applicable house requirement, and the terms of your account matter. The example also does not promise that the broker will give you a set amount of time to make up a deficiency.
Can my broker sell my stocks without telling me?
It may be able to. The SEC’s Investor.gov glossary says a broker may require an immediate deposit or sell positions without informing the investor in advance. The broker may decide which securities to sell and may act before a deadline it has offered. The margin agreement governs the account’s terms, so read it and ask the firm what rights apply in your situation.

That warning appears in the SEC’s Investor Bulletin, “Understanding Margin Accounts”. FINRA’s investor disclosure also says a firm can sell securities or other assets in accounts held at the firm. Do not assume you will receive advance notice or that a stated deadline prevents liquidation. FINRA, “Guidance on Margin Flyer”
That means a notice should not be treated as a promise that you can wait until its last stated moment before acting. The broker may have discretion under the agreement, including discretion over what to sell. If the notice gives a deadline, ask directly whether it is a firm cutoff for your account or whether the firm can liquidate earlier. If the broker says liquidation has begun, ask what has been sold and what deficiency, if any, remains. Do not rely on an assumption that you will choose the positions sold or that a broker must first contact you.
The exact rights and process depend on the account agreement and applicable rules. The SEC and FINRA sources describe U.S. securities margin; they do not establish how every broker will handle every account. Check the agreement and obtain account-specific confirmation from the firm rather than treating this general description as a promise about your particular call.
How long do I have to meet a margin call?
There is no single deadline established for every investor or broker. Your notice and margin agreement are the starting points, but you should confirm directly with the brokerage firm whether a deadline applies, what it means, and whether liquidation can start sooner. Requirements and procedures can vary with the firm, account, security and jurisdiction.
When you contact the broker, ask for the current deficiency, the deadline and time zone, the ways the firm will accept to meet it, the maintenance requirement being applied, and whether any liquidation has started or could happen before the stated deadline. Request clarification in writing if a figure or term is unclear.

Do not infer a standard grace period from another investor’s experience, an online post, or a deadline stated by a different firm. No single number of hours or days to respond applies universally. A specific notice may describe a deadline, but the broker’s right to liquidate may not be limited to waiting until that time. Ask what the notice means for your account rather than assuming a stated date guarantees that no sale will happen before it.
When confirming the deadline, be precise. Ask when the required action must be completed, whether the firm uses a particular time zone, and what it considers an accepted deposit or eligible security. Ask whether a payment or transfer must be received and credited by the deadline, and whether the firm can sell assets while you are arranging it. The sources do not prescribe a standard method or processing time, so the broker must clarify its account-specific requirements.
How to respond to a margin call
- Read the alert and agreement. Identify the amount the broker says is due, the deadline, acceptable deposits or securities, the current house requirement, and the agreement’s liquidation terms. Compare the notice with the agreement, and make a note of any item you do not understand. A notice is an account-specific communication, while the agreement sets out terms that may explain the firm’s rights and procedures.
- Contact the broker promptly. Use contact details verified from the firm’s official website or your account statement. Ask whether the account is already subject to liquidation and whether the stated deadline prevents the firm from selling positions. Confirm the exact deficiency and maintenance requirement currently being applied. Ask the broker to describe the methods it accepts to address the call, and whether a proposed deposit or security would count once received or only after it is credited.
- Understand the available choices and their consequences. Ask the firm which responses it accepts and how each would affect your account. A cash deposit puts additional money at risk; selling securities may realize a loss. Neither choice is right for everyone, and a broker’s explanation of account procedures is not individualized investment advice. Consider whether a proposed action actually addresses the stated deficiency, and ask what the account status would be afterward rather than assuming a single transaction resolves the call.
- Keep a record. Save the notice and agreement, and record conversations, deposits and trades. If you dispute the calculation or how the call was handled, ask the broker to explain the calculation in writing and consider consulting an appropriately qualified professional. Keeping the figures, times and communications together can help you follow what was requested and what action was taken.
This is a practical account-administration sequence, not a promise of extra time or a guaranteed way to prevent liquidation. The SEC advises investors to understand margin agreements and the risks of borrowing to invest. SEC, “Margin: Borrowing Money to Pay for Stocks”
As you work through the steps, focus on facts that change what you can do: the amount of the shortfall, the requirement used to calculate it, the deadline, the broker’s accepted methods, and its liquidation rights. If the numbers do not make sense, ask the broker to show the account calculation and explain it. If your call or the firm’s response is disputed, keep the records and seek qualified help rather than relying on a general article to resolve an account-specific disagreement.
Deposit cash or sell securities?
The broker’s notice and agreement determine which methods are accepted; the sources do not establish a universal numeric outcome or a universally preferable response. The key difference is whether you put more funds into the account or reduce the collateral and borrowing by selling. Ask the broker to explain how a proposed action changes the deficiency and whether it must be completed by a specific time.
A deposit and a sale can affect the account in different ways, but neither is automatically a complete or risk-free answer. A deposit may add equity if it is accepted and credited in time, while also exposing more of your money to loss in the account. A sale reduces holdings and may reduce the loan, but it may realize a loss and might not eliminate what you owe. Ask how the proposed action affects both the deficiency and the remaining loan balance.

Before deciding between the methods the broker says it accepts, compare the practical effects rather than focusing only on the amount requested. For a deposit, ask how much is needed, what forms the firm accepts, when it must arrive, and whether the firm can liquidate before it is credited. For a sale, ask whether you may choose the securities or whether the broker may choose them, whether it has already sold anything, and whether the proceeds will cover the amount owed. The answers will be specific to your account; the sources do not supply a universal formula for predicting the result.
| Consideration | Deposit cash or eligible securities | Sell securities |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate account effect | May add equity if the broker accepts the deposit and credits it in time. | Reduces holdings and may reduce the loan, depending on sale proceeds and account treatment. |
| Financial exposure | Additional funds are exposed to investment losses while held in the account. | A sale can crystallize a loss if the position is sold below its purchase price. |
| Deadline and liquidation | Confirm what counts as an accepted deposit, when it must arrive, and whether liquidation can occur first. | Confirm whether you may choose what to sell or whether the firm can select positions and sell before a stated deadline. |
| Possible remaining debt | A deposit does not by itself guarantee the call is resolved; confirm the resulting account status with the broker. | Sale proceeds may not cover the loan or other amount owed; a shortfall can remain. |
The comparison is about questions to ask, not a recommendation. If the broker says a particular method is acceptable, confirm the required amount and when it will count. If you are considering selling, remember that the broker may have authority to select positions and that sale proceeds may not cover the debt. If you are considering adding money, remember that the funds remain exposed to investment loss. There is no universally supported answer about which option produces the better financial outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can I lose more than I invested?
Yes. A margin loan must still be repaid, and falling collateral may not be enough to cover what you owe. FINRA’s disclosure says the customer remains responsible for a shortfall after liquidation. If the securities are sold for less than the debt and other amounts owed, you may still owe money after your positions are gone. Interest on the borrowed amount also adds cost. FINRA, “Guidance on Margin Flyer” and SEC, “Margin: Borrowing Money to Pay for Stocks”
This is one reason liquidation does not necessarily end the problem. Selling collateral can reduce the holdings in the account, but the customer can remain responsible for a remaining balance if the sale does not cover the loan and other amounts owed. A broker’s sale is not a guarantee that the debt has been paid in full. Ask the firm for the balance after any sale and confirm whether the account remains deficient.
Borrowing also has an ongoing cost: interest on the amount borrowed adds to the expense of holding a margin loan. Falling prices can reduce the value of the collateral while the obligation to repay the loan remains. The SEC’s margin education materials describe the risks of borrowing to invest; the appropriate conclusion is to understand the exposure and the agreement, not to assume that the initial cash contribution sets a maximum possible loss.

What to keep in mind
- A margin call signals that account equity is below a broker’s maintenance requirement; the broker may set a higher house requirement than the regulatory baseline.
- The firm may demand cash or securities and may have the right to liquidate assets under the margin agreement, potentially without advance notice.
- There is no universal deadline. Confirm your specific deadline, accepted response methods and liquidation status with your broker.
- Selling collateral may leave a residual loan balance, while adding cash exposes more of your funds to potential loss.
- The broker may choose which securities to sell and may act before an offered deadline; ask rather than assuming you have a cure period.
- Interest adds cost to borrowing, and liquidation may not eliminate the debt if sale proceeds are insufficient.
The cited materials address U.S. securities margin. A broker, account agreement, security and jurisdiction can affect the applicable requirements and procedures; only your broker can confirm the current facts for your account. The SEC figures and example are illustrations, not a substitute for checking the maintenance requirement, deficiency and deadline in your own notice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens in a margin call and how to respond?
A margin call means your account equity has fallen below the broker’s maintenance requirement. Read the notice and margin agreement, contact the broker promptly, and confirm the deficiency, accepted ways to address it, deadline, and whether liquidation has started or can start sooner. There is no universal cure period.
Can my broker sell my stocks without telling me?
It may be able to. SEC Investor.gov says a broker may require an immediate deposit or sell positions without informing you in advance, may choose which securities to sell, and may act before an offered deadline. Check your margin agreement and ask the broker what applies to your account.
How long do I have to meet a margin call?
There is no single deadline for every investor or broker. Check the notice and margin agreement, then ask the broker to confirm the deadline, time zone, accepted response methods, and whether liquidation can occur before that deadline.
Can I lose more than I invested?
Yes. If securities are sold for less than the margin loan and other amounts owed, you may remain responsible for a shortfall after liquidation. Interest on the borrowed amount also adds cost.
Should I deposit cash or sell securities to meet a margin call?
There is no universally best choice. A deposit may expose additional funds to loss; selling may crystallize a loss and may not cover the debt. Ask the broker which methods it accepts and how each would affect your account, then consider your circumstances.
The Bottom Line
A margin call is urgent, but it does not come with one universal deadline or response. Read the notice and agreement, contact the broker using verified details, and confirm the exact deficiency, accepted ways to address it, and whether liquidation can happen before any stated deadline. Do not assume the broker will wait, let you choose what it sells, or that liquidation will erase the debt.
