If you mean a physical Bee Card, nothing happens to the card when your iPhone battery dies. Bee Card is described by its operator as a prepaid physical smartcard. Tap that card on the Bee Card reader to tag on and, where required, tag off; the phone is not needed.
The premise needs one important correction: the official Bee Card information does not document a Bee Card stored in Apple Wallet. Apple’s low-battery feature, called power reserve, can keep some eligible cards and passes working in Express Mode, but Apple does not identify Bee Card as one of those supported items. Treat a physical Bee Card and an unrelated transit card in Apple Wallet as two different situations.
First, separate the physical Bee Card from an Apple Wallet card
Bee Card is the prepaid public-transport smartcard used in ten New Zealand regions. The operator’s instructions describe tapping the physical card on a Bee Card reader. Your iPhone battery level does not control it. A dead, missing or switched-off phone therefore does not prevent a properly working Bee Card from being read.

Apple Wallet is a separate issue. The Apple documentation reviewed for this question explains power reserve for eligible cards, passes and keys that have Express Mode enabled. It does not name Bee Card, and the Bee Card product information does not document an Apple Wallet version. You should not assume that adding a Bee Card to Wallet is supported simply because another transport authority supports a Wallet transit card.

What Apple power reserve actually does
When an iPhone becomes so low on power that it needs charging, Apple may keep a small amount of battery available for certain Express Mode items. Apple Support says power reserve works for up to five hours with some cards, passes and keys that have Express Mode turned on. “Up to” is a maximum for supported items, not a five-hour guarantee for every iPhone, card or journey. Express Mode lets an eligible item be presented without unlocking the phone or opening Wallet. Apple’s security documentation explains that, even when iOS is not running because the iPhone needs charging, there may still be enough power for Express Card transactions: Apple Platform Security: Express Cards with power reserve.
Several limits matter:
- Power reserve applies only to supported Wallet items. Apple’s general description is not confirmation that a Bee Card works with it.
- Express Mode must be enabled for the relevant item. Apple says it is turned on by default when an eligible transit card or compatible item is added, but you can inspect or change the setting in that card’s Wallet details.
- The five-hour figure is a maximum cited by Apple for some items. Temperature, battery condition, device model, previous usage and the transaction itself can affect how long reserve remains.
- Power reserve is unavailable after a normal manual shutdown. Turning the iPhone off yourself disables the feature.
- A successful low-battery transaction may be indicated by haptics rather than a visible on-screen notification, so lack of a normal Wallet screen does not by itself prove failure.
How to check whether an eligible Wallet item remains available
If you are using a transit card that is officially supported in Apple Wallet, use the following procedure when the iPhone says it needs charging:

- Do not perform a standard shutdown. Leave the iPhone in its low-battery state so power reserve can operate.
- Press the iPhone side button, or the Home button on a model that has one, to see which cards or items remain available.
- Look for the relevant Express Mode card before presenting the phone to the reader. The available list is specific to that device and its configured Wallet items.
- Hold the appropriate part of the iPhone near the transit reader in the same way you would for a normal contactless Wallet transaction.
- Wait for the reader’s confirmation. Because Apple notes that haptic feedback may replace an on-screen notification, pay attention to vibration and to the reader’s own beep or display.
Do not repeatedly wake the phone just to check. Apple warns that checking the available cards over and over can significantly reduce the remaining reserve. If the phone has been manually switched off, this procedure will not restore power reserve.
What to do when travelling with a physical Bee Card
Keep the card separate from the phone
Carry the physical Bee Card where it can be removed and tapped directly. A dead iPhone, a damaged phone screen or an unavailable Wallet app does not affect the card’s stored travel credential. Avoid presenting several contactless cards together, because the reader may detect the wrong card or fail to identify one clearly.
Tag on and tag off as the local service requires
Use the Bee Card reader when boarding and, where the service requires it, when leaving. Follow the reader’s beep, light or display. A successful tag is more reliable evidence than the phone’s battery indicator because the physical Bee Card transaction is handled by the transport system.

Keep a valid fare if a tag fails
The Bee Card FAQ says that a passenger who cannot tag on or tag off must still have a valid ticket. If the card does not produce a successful response, ask the driver or check the local transport provider’s instructions immediately. The FAQ says cash tickets from the driver are available in most regions, but cash acceptance, prices and ticket rules differ by region.

If the Bee Card reader does not accept the card
A failed tap is not automatically an iPhone problem. Work through these checks in order:
- Check the reader response. Look and listen for the normal success indication. If there is no beep or confirmation, ask the driver whether the reader is operating.
- Present one card only. Remove the Bee Card from a wallet containing bank cards or other transit cards, then tap it flat and briefly on the marked reader area.
- Try the other required event. Some services require both a tag-on and a tag-off. A card that was not tagged correctly at one stage may need staff assistance rather than repeated attempts.
- Ask about a local outage or rule. Bee Card operates across ten regions, and procedures, cash-ticket availability and fare enforcement can vary.
- Obtain a valid alternative ticket. Where the region permits it, buy a cash ticket from the driver. Keep that ticket for the journey and follow any instructions about refunds or correcting a missed tag.
The operator’s FAQ is the appropriate place to confirm the current regional process: Bee Card FAQ. General Apple Wallet advice cannot substitute for the transport authority’s fare rules.
Can a dead iPhone still be used for another transit card?
Possibly, but only when all of the conditions for Apple power reserve are met. The item must be an eligible card, pass or key, configured for Express Mode, and the iPhone must still have reserve power. Apple’s documentation describes the capability generically; it does not guarantee operation for every transit program or every device.

In practical terms, a phone that has shut down because it needs charging may retain a limited contactless function for some configured items. A phone that you deliberately shut down does not. A card that is not eligible for Express Mode does not gain that ability merely by being in Wallet. And the feature’s existence does not establish Bee Card compatibility.

Preparation before you leave
If you normally rely on a Wallet transit card, check its support and Express Mode status while the phone is charged:
- Open Wallet and select the transit card.
- Open the card’s details and inspect the Express Mode setting. The exact labels can vary by iOS version and card type.
- Confirm that the transit authority officially supports Apple Wallet for that card. For Bee Card, the cited official information describes the physical card rather than a Wallet implementation.
- Carry the physical Bee Card or another accepted fare method as a backup when the transport rules make that practical.
- Charge the phone before travel if you need trip history, route information, mobile ticket display or other phone-only functions. Power reserve is a contingency, not a replacement for normal battery life.
A small portable charger can reduce the chance of reaching the low-battery state, but it is optional preparation. It is not needed to use a physical Bee Card, and it does not change which Wallet items Apple supports.
Common misunderstandings
“The phone is dead, so the physical Bee Card must be dead too.”
No. The physical Bee Card is the payment and travel credential being tapped. Its operation is independent of the iPhone’s battery.
“Every card in Wallet works in power reserve.”
No. Apple limits the feature to some eligible Express Mode items. The published “up to five hours” statement is qualified and does not identify Bee Card.

“A successful haptic vibration proves the Bee Card was accepted.”
Not necessarily. Haptics relate to an Apple Wallet Express Mode transaction. A physical Bee Card should be confirmed by the Bee Card reader and its transport-system response.
“I can switch the iPhone off and still use power reserve later.”
No. Apple says a standard manual shutdown makes the feature unavailable. Leave a critically low phone in its automatic low-power state if you are relying on an eligible Express Mode item.
The practical answer
For the Bee Card described by its operator, use the physical card. Your iPhone battery can be at zero and the card can still be tapped on the reader. If you are actually asking about a different transit card stored in Apple Wallet, power reserve may support it for a limited time—Apple says up to five hours for some Express Mode items—but only if that card is eligible, Express Mode is enabled and the phone has not been manually shut down. There is no published Bee Card-specific confirmation that this Apple feature applies to Bee Card.
