You may not be able to cash out immediately. A tokenized fund share can be redeemed with the fund, transferred to an eligible investor, or sold through a secondary market—but those are separate routes, and none is guaranteed simply because the share is represented on a blockchain. If the fund cannot readily sell portfolio assets, its documents and applicable rules determine whether it can delay, limit, charge for, or suspend redemptions.

Why a token does not guarantee an exit

Tokenization changes how ownership interests are represented or recorded; it does not, by itself, make a fund’s portfolio easier to sell. If the fund owns assets that are difficult to trade, a blockchain record cannot make those assets liquid or create the cash needed to meet every redemption request. The practical exit depends on the fund’s terms, its available liquidity, the applicable law, and whether another investor is willing and permitted to take your shares.

It helps to separate three things that are often blurred together: asking the fund to redeem shares, transferring shares to another holder, and selling shares on a trading venue. A token transfer might be only an instruction to update the fund’s official ownership register. It is not necessarily a completed legal transfer, a sale at a particular price, or a request for cash from the fund.

For example, J.P. Morgan Trust IV’s May 13, 2026 SEC-filed prospectus says that a blockchain transfer instructs the transfer agent to record a share transfer. The transferee does not become the owner until the investor register is updated. The prospectus also says peer-to-peer transfers are not a public trading market and that the fund had no current secondary-market agreement. These are disclosures for that fund, not rules for every tokenized product. J.P. Morgan Trust IV prospectus

Which exit route are you trying to use?

Route Who pays or takes the shares? What determines price? What can prevent or delay it?
Redemption The fund processes a request under its dealing terms. Often the NAV calculated under the fund’s pricing rules, rather than the most recently displayed NAV. Cutoffs, dealing windows, proper-form requirements, liquidity tools, payment timing, or suspension provisions.
Private or peer-to-peer transfer An eligible recipient takes the shares, if the fund’s transfer rules allow it. Whatever price or other consideration the parties agree, if there is a sale. Recipient eligibility, allowlisting, transfer-agent processing, and the absence of a willing counterparty.
Secondary-market sale A buyer trades through a market or platform arranged for that product. The executable market price, which may differ from the fund’s NAV. No venue or market-maker arrangement, low market depth, trading restrictions, or a lack of buyers.

The table describes different mechanisms, not three options every fund necessarily offers. Check the fund’s current offer documents and dealing procedures before assuming that a particular route is available.

What happens when you redeem with the fund?

A redemption is a request to the fund to buy back or cancel shares under its governing documents. It is not the same as selling a token to another investor. The fund’s dealing rules establish when requests can be submitted, when they are treated as received in proper form, how the price is calculated, and when payment is due.

Price may be based on a later NAV

Many funds use forward pricing: the redemption price is determined by the next NAV calculated after a properly submitted request, subject to that fund’s rules. That means the NAV shown when you start the process may not be the price applied to your order. A secondary-market price is different: it reflects the price at which a buyer and seller can transact on that venue at that time, and it may be above or below NAV.

Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) framework for secondary trading of tokenized SFC-authorized investment products requires investor alerts for significant deviations from indicative NAV and disclosure of the primary subscription or redemption alternative. Those controls help communicate the difference between a traded price and a fund’s primary-market NAV process; they do not guarantee that a holder can sell at NAV or at a chosen time. Payment timing is product-specific

Do not infer a universal settlement promise from another fund’s terms. A Superstate SEC-filed prospectus, for instance, describes redemptions at the next calculated NAV, with payment typically in one to two business days. It also allows payment to take up to seven days in stated circumstances, and describes possible suspension or longer postponement in unusual circumstances as authorized by SEC rules. Those timeframes and powers apply to the prospectus example, not automatically to other tokenized funds. Superstate prospectus

For your own investment, look for the dealing calendar, daily cutoff, holiday schedule, proper-form definition, valuation time, payment method, and any stated processing or settlement period. A request submitted after a cutoff, with incomplete information, or through an unsupported channel may be treated differently from a valid request received on time.

What if the fund cannot sell its assets quickly?

When a fund faces redemptions but cannot readily sell portfolio holdings without delay or a material price impact, its liquidity-management provisions matter. Depending on the product and applicable rules, those provisions may allow the fund to use liquidity fees, gates, delayed payment, or a suspension. The exact triggers and procedures are not interchangeable: a fee may reduce proceeds, a gate may limit the amount investors can redeem, and a suspension may temporarily stop processing redemptions.

One SEC-filed Franklin Templeton government money-market fund prospectus says the fund invests at least 99.5% of total assets in government securities, cash, and fully collateralized repurchase agreements, and reserves the ability for its board to impose liquidity fees or redemption gates after prior notice. It also says that blockchain recording does not change the fund’s investments. This is a product-specific illustration of how share-recording technology and portfolio liquidity are distinct; it is not a description of all tokenized funds or a statement that those tools apply to your fund. If a fund uses a liquidity tool or suspends dealing, the token may remain visible in a wallet or on a ledger even though your ability to obtain cash is restricted. The display of a balance is not proof that the fund is accepting redemptions, that a transfer can settle, or that a buyer is available. Read the prospectus for the conditions under which a tool can be used, who decides, what notice is required, and what happens to requests already submitted.

Can you transfer the shares or sell them to another investor?

A transfer can provide an alternative to redemption only if the fund permits it and a recipient can take the shares. Some products restrict transfers to approved or allowlisted wallets, eligible investors, or other permitted recipients. The transfer agent or fund administrator may need to process the instruction and update the official register. Until the required registration step is complete, possession of a token or a submitted blockchain instruction may not establish ownership under the product’s terms.

A transfer is not necessarily a sale: it may move shares between wallets without payment. If you are negotiating a private sale, you still need an eligible buyer, agreement on price and settlement, and compliance with transfer restrictions. A technical standard that allows a token to move does not establish that a person may legally acquire it or that the fund will recognize the transfer.

Even where a prospectus contemplates a future secondary-market feature, that does not mean the feature is live. J.P. Morgan Trust IV’s cited prospectus says its contemplated feature was not then available and might never become available. It also warns that there may be few or no eligible counterparties for peer-to-peer transfers. The relevant question is not simply whether transfers are technically possible, but whether the particular product has an operative arrangement and a buyer who can complete the transaction. J.P. What a secondary market can—and cannot—do

A secondary market may let investors trade shares with one another without asking the fund to redeem each seller’s position. But a platform, permissioned transfer facility, or token standard is not enough to create market depth. The product must have a functioning venue and arrangements that permit trading, and potential buyers must be present. Even then, an order may not execute, or it may execute at a price different from NAV.

The SFC’s April 20, 2026 circular sets requirements for secondary trading of tokenized SFC-authorized investment products, including market-maker arrangements, liquidity monitoring, price-deviation alerts, and operational links between secondary and primary markets. It also notes that primary orders remain subject to normal dealing windows, liquidity-risk tools, and forward pricing. These are requirements within the Hong Kong framework for the products and intermediaries it covers; they are not an investor guarantee of continuous liquidity or a particular sale price. SFC circular, April 20, 2026

Distinguish three claims when evaluating a trading venue: that it is permitted, that it is arranged for this fund, and that it currently has buyers or market makers willing to transact. Only the last is evidence of present executable liquidity, and it can change. Neither on-chain transfer activity nor a displayed indicative price establishes that you can sell your holdings at that price.

How jurisdiction and fund structure change the answer

Rules differ by jurisdiction and by product structure, so a regulator’s policy should not be read as a general right to cash out. In the UK, the Financial Conduct Authority’s policy statement PS26/7, published April 30, 2026, introduced an optional Direct to Fund model under which investors can transact directly with an authorized fund whether it is traditional or tokenized. The FCA said the new rules and guidance took effect immediately. That describes a UK policy option; it does not override an individual fund’s dealing terms or establish that all tokenized funds offer direct dealing. FCA PS26/7, Progressing fund tokenisation

The Hong Kong SFC framework concerns secondary trading of tokenized SFC-authorized products and the controls expected around that activity. The UK model concerns direct transactions with authorized funds. Neither framework should be applied to a fund offered in another jurisdiction without checking where it is established, which regulator governs it, how it is offered to you, and what its documents say.

What to check before investing or submitting an exit request

For a specific fund, use its current prospectus, supplements, transfer procedures, and dealing instructions—not a general description of tokenization—to answer these questions:

  • What exit route is actually available? Identify whether the documents allow redemption, private transfers, a formal secondary venue, or some combination. A planned feature is not an available one.
  • Who is eligible to hold or receive shares? Check investor qualifications, transfer restrictions, wallet allowlisting, and any required approval of the recipient.
  • When and how must a request be submitted? Find dealing days, cutoffs, required forms or transaction channels, and what counts as receipt in proper form.
  • How is the price set? Separate the next-calculated NAV used for primary dealing from a negotiated or market-traded price. Look for forward-pricing provisions and any deviation alerts.
  • When would you receive payment or final registration? Check the fund’s payment timetable and the steps required to update its official register. A blockchain confirmation may not be the final administrative or legal step.
  • What liquidity tools can be used? Locate provisions for fees, redemption limits or gates, delayed payment, and suspension, along with the stated circumstances and notice process.
  • Is there a counterparty or market maker now? Confirm that a venue or arrangement is operational for this product and understand whether it has actual liquidity. Access to a platform alone does not ensure execution.
  • Which law and regulator apply? Confirm the fund’s domicile, offering jurisdiction, regulator, and governing documents before relying on a rule described for another market.

If you have already submitted a request, use the fund’s official investor-service or transfer-agent channel to confirm whether it was received in proper form, which pricing date applies, and whether a liquidity tool or suspension affects it. Do not treat a pending token transfer, an indicative NAV, or a wallet balance as confirmation that cash has been paid or a sale has settled.

What the available examples do not establish

The fund disclosures and regulatory frameworks above illustrate possible mechanisms and product-specific terms; they do not establish how likely any holder is to find a buyer before a fund can sell its assets. No comparable probability or market-wide liquidity statistic is available in these sources. The sound conclusion is therefore conditional: your exit depends on the actual fund terms, operational arrangements, applicable rules, liquidity at the time, and willingness of eligible counterparties.
