Short answer: Sparing or pacifying enemies is the route to recruitment and a livelier Castle Town from Chapter 2 onward. Defeating recruitable enemies with attacks makes them Lost, but violent victories improve your party’s HP, Attack and Magic for the rest of that chapter, up to an unspecified limit. These choices can alter scenes and activities, yet ordinary encounters do not create a separate good or bad ending; the official site describes DELTARUNE as having one ending.
How enemy defeat works
DELTARUNE presents two broad ways to finish an encounter: violent and nonviolent. A violent win comes from dealing enough damage with FIGHT or a damaging spell. A nonviolent win comes from preparing an enemy for SPARE or, when it is TIRED, having Ralsei use PACIFY.
The choice is made one target at a time. Defeating one enemy does not automatically settle the status of the others in the same battle. You can attack one target while using ACT commands to make another ready to spare, provided the encounter allows those actions.
SPARE: reach 100% MERCY
ACT commands generally raise an enemy’s MERCY. When that individual target reaches 100%, select SPARE. The target’s name turns yellow and a star appears in the target menu, indicating that the command should succeed. SPARE is a nonviolent defeat, not an escape that leaves the battle unresolved.

PACIFY: use Ralsei on a TIRED target
Some ACTs, and in some encounters the loss of enough enemy HP, can make a target TIRED. A TIRED enemy is marked in the menu with blue text and “Zz.” Ralsei can then cast PACIFY to end that target nonviolently. PACIFY requires at least 16% TP, so check the party’s TP before spending turns on the setup.
Not every enemy supports both methods. The official gameplay reminder warns that some bosses cannot be defeated violently and others cannot be defeated nonviolently. Follow the requirements shown by that encounter rather than assuming that every opponent has a universal spare sequence.
What changes from Chapter 1 to Chapter 2
The recruitment system starts in Chapter 2. That distinction matters when interpreting an early playthrough: you are not building Castle Town’s recruit roster through Chapter 1 battles in the same way you do later.

For Chapter 1, community documentation reports that its enemies are treated as recruited when Chapter 2 begins and that later dialogue can acknowledge violence in Chapter 1. Those details come from a community-maintained reference, not the official gameplay reminder, so treat the dialogue wording and any unlisted flags as secondary information. Do not apply Chapter 2’s “spare this enemy to recruit it” rule retroactively to every Chapter 1 encounter.

From Chapter 2 onward, the game records recruitment for eligible enemy types. Spare or pacify enough members of the required type and that enemy group can move to Castle Town. Violently defeating a recruitable member instead marks it as Lost and prevents that particular recruitment progress from being completed through that encounter.
Sparing, pacifying and recruiting
Recruitment is cumulative, not a single-button reward
For recruitable enemies, a single SPARE or PACIFY may be only one step toward the required recruitment count. The game provides recruitment progress and completion checks, allowing you to see whether a group has joined. Once the requirement is met, the recruits become part of Castle Town rather than remaining only as battle outcomes.
Recruitment makes the town more populated and can open activities or additional interactions. The official reminder also says that failing to recruit certain enemies, or repeatedly using violence, may have minor effects on some story scenes. That wording is deliberately limited: it confirms contextual changes without promising a major branch after every fight.
What a nonviolent route is good for
- Preserving recruitment progress for eligible enemies from Chapter 2 onward.
- Adding residents and possible activities to Castle Town.
- Keeping access open to scenes that check whether particular enemies were recruited.
- Avoiding the Lost status on enemies that can join the town.
Nonviolent victories do not provide the chapter-long HP, Attack and Magic increase associated with violent victories. If immediate combat power is your priority, that is the principal trade-off.

What violent victories give you—and what they cost
Short-term party-stat benefit
Beginning in Chapter 2, violent victories raise the party’s HP, Attack and Magic for the remainder of the current chapter, subject to a limit that the official reminder does not specify. The boost is therefore a temporary chapter benefit, not a permanent account-wide upgrade. It can make subsequent fights in that chapter easier, but it does not remove the need to meet special boss conditions.
Lost status and missed recruitment
When a recruitable enemy is defeated violently, it becomes Lost. A Lost enemy cannot be recruited later through that defeat, so choosing attacks can close the recruitment path for that enemy group or reduce your ability to complete its required count. This is the direct cost of taking the stat-boost route.
- Immediate result: the battle ends through damage.
- Chapter result: party HP, Attack and Magic improve for the rest of the chapter, up to the game’s cap.
- Town result: the defeated recruitable enemy is Lost rather than added to Castle Town.
- Story result: some later scenes or activities may differ when recruitment records are missing.
Does this create different endings?
No ordinary spare-or-defeat decision should be described as a guaranteed alternate ending. The official game framing says DELTARUNE has one ending. That does not mean choices are cosmetic: recruitment records, Lost enemies and repeated violence can change the town and selected scenes. It means those effects should not be inflated into a promise of a wholly separate finale for every route.
Choices can persist when you finish a chapter. The official reminder says a later chapter can carry over collected items, money, equipment and choices. You can also start a chapter without completion data in the stated default state. If a scene depends on an earlier recruitment or loss record, the save data you carry forward matters; starting without it uses the game’s default assumptions instead.

Documented later-chapter examples (spoilers for Chapters 2–4)
The following are specific examples reported by the community-maintained DELTARUNE Wiki. They illustrate how flags can matter, but they are not a complete list of every condition and should be treated as secondary-source details.
Chapter 2: recruited enemies and the Thrash Machine
The reference reports that recruits contribute HP to the Thrash Machine before the GIGA Queen battle: five HP per recruit, starting from a 200-HP base and reaching as high as 250. It also documents Castle Town scenes and activities that vary with recruitment. Because this is a community-maintained account rather than the official reminder, verify the current in-game behavior if an exact count is important to your route planning.
Chapter 3: losing Zapper
The same reference says that losing Zapper removes a spotlight route and can block the chapter’s Egg if TripTicket was not obtained earlier. This is a conditional example of a Lost-enemy record affecting optional content, not evidence that every violent battle removes a major story route.

The reference reports that recruiting Pippins and Shadowguys, while having lost no Chapter 3 recruits, allows them to repair Tenna. It also describes a Jackenstein rescue scene that depends on no Dark Sanctuary enemies being Lost. These conditions show why a player pursuing all optional scenes should preserve recruitment records across chapters rather than deciding only on the basis of the current battle’s reward.

How to choose in a playthrough
Choose nonviolent actions when town content is the priority
- Use ACT commands on recruitable enemies instead of reducing them to zero HP.
- Raise the individual target’s MERCY to 100%, then select the yellow-name, star-marked SPARE option.
- If the target becomes TIRED, confirm that the blue “Zz” marker is present and have Ralsei use PACIFY when you have at least 16% TP.
- Check the recruitment progress or completion screen after battles so you know whether the required count has been met.
- Carry the completed chapter data forward if you want later chapters to evaluate those choices.
Choose violence when current-chapter strength is the priority
- Use FIGHT or damaging spells to defeat the target, following any encounter-specific restrictions.
- Expect a recruitable enemy defeated this way to be recorded as Lost.
- Use the resulting HP, Attack and Magic increase during the remainder of that chapter.
- Accept that the affected enemy cannot supply the same recruitment progress and that some later scenes or activities may be unavailable.
Use a mixed route deliberately
You do not have to make every battle follow one philosophy. A mixed route can spare enemies needed for a Castle Town activity while accepting a Lost record elsewhere, or it can use violence late in a chapter after recruitment goals are complete. Keep a written note of which enemy types you still need if you are targeting a full town, because the combat-stat benefit and recruitment objective pull in opposite directions.

Common mistakes and recovery options
Attacking before checking recruitment goals
The most consequential mistake is defeating a recruitable enemy before deciding whether you want its town content. Check the target’s status and your recruitment objective first; once the enemy is Lost, that battle cannot be converted into recruitment.
Assuming every enemy can be spared immediately
SPARE is unavailable until the individual target reaches 100% MERCY. Look for the yellow name and star rather than selecting SPARE repeatedly and expecting it to work. For PACIFY, wait for the TIRED indicator and confirm your TP total.

Expecting a permanent stat build
The violent reward lasts for the rest of the current chapter and has a cap that is not specified in the official reminder. It should not be treated as a permanent increase that automatically carries into every future chapter.
Assuming one missed recruit ruins the whole game
The documented consequences are selective: Castle Town population, activities and certain scenes can change. The official material does not say that one Lost enemy forces a universal bad ending. If you miss a recruitment goal, continue with the knowledge that some optional content may differ rather than assuming the entire story is locked away.
