The Forest’s sanity stat is described as having no direct effect on the player at 0%. The game-specific community wiki documents no death, forced game over, or special zero-sanity event. The meaningful threshold it reports is below 90%, which historically enabled effigy access—but effigies were removed from the build menu in version 1.0, so that threshold may not let you build one in your current version.

What does 0 sanity do in The Forest?

The Forest Wiki describes sanity as a percentage from 0% to 100% and says the stat has no effect on the player beyond its connection to effigies. It does not document a special event, death, or forced game over at zero. Claims that reaching 0% disables crafting, makes the player more vulnerable, or causes permanent damage are not established by that reference.

The same community-maintained page mentions auditory hallucinations only as an unconfirmed theory. It is not evidence that hallucinations are a confirmed consequence of low or zero sanity. The Forest Wiki’s Sanity page is a community reference, not direct developer documentation.

Is 0 sanity the threshold for building effigies?

No. The cited stats reference gives the relevant threshold as dropping below 90% sanity, not reaching 0%. That distinction describes an unlock condition, not a special effect of zero sanity.

There is an important version caveat: The Forest Wiki’s Effigy page says effigies were removed from the crafting/build menu in version 1.0, whose full release was April 30, 2018. As a result, the older below-90% unlock rule does not guarantee effigies are available in the version you are playing. Check your game version and build menu rather than treating the threshold as a promise of current crafting access. The Forest Wiki’s Stats page describes the threshold; its Effigy page describes the menu change.

The Effigy page describes effigies as intended to frighten or deter cannibals, while also noting their behavior can be inconsistent. Treat that as community-wiki guidance rather than a guaranteed defensive effect.

How to interpret the stat while playing

  • If sanity reaches 0%: The cited reference documents no special zero-sanity penalty or event.
  • If sanity falls below 90%: The wiki describes this as an effigy access threshold, but effigy availability depends on the game version and build menu.
  • If you hear claims about madness or hallucinations: The cited page calls auditory hallucinations unconfirmed; it does not establish crafting impairment, increased vulnerability, or permanent consequences.
