When Alexander, a great tusker in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, died of natural causes in 2009, his carcass helped prompt scientists to ask what becomes of an elephant’s enormous ecological presence. Their findings: the remains can leave a nutrient-rich patch that changes soil, plants and grazing for years—but the nutrient surge does not simply fertilize the savanna. At fresh sites, it can be so extreme that plants struggle to regrow.
How Alexander’s carcass led to the study
Alexander was a large, lone bull and one of Kruger National Park’s great tuskers. Biodiversity scientist Dave Thompson regularly passed the area where his carcass lay. Watching it decompose over a couple of months made Thompson curious about what the remains were doing to the soil and food web.
A team subsequently studied elephant carcass sites in Kruger, examining soil chemistry and microbes, plant communities and grazing. The findings were reported by the University of California, Santa Barbara on October 12, 2026, alongside the team’s paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. What happens at a carcass site over time?
First, the carcass leaves bare ground
The carcass and scavenger activity flatten or remove vegetation, leaving a bare patch. The researchers’ comparison notes that elephant meat and bones can disappear within a couple of weeks in the African sun; that is a description of the process in this context, not a universal timetable for every carcass or habitat.

- Measures approximately 9" long x 8.5" wide, when sitting down
Then, nutrients flood the soil
As the remains break down, nutrients enter the soil. At really fresh sites, soil nitrogen concentrations can be up to 3,000 times higher, according to the researchers as reported by UC Santa Barbara. Lead author Courtney Reed called the result “just insane.” This is an extreme initial pulse, not a measure of how fertile every part of the surrounding savanna becomes.
That distinction matters: more nutrients do not immediately mean more plants. The fresh pulse can be toxic to vegetation and delay regrowth, so the carcass site may remain bare before new growth takes hold.

Later, grasses draw grazers back
Once soil chemistry moderates, fast-growing plants colonize the patch. Leaf assays found the grasses especially nutritious. Herbivores preferentially visited these areas, and their repeated grazing and manure added to the site’s nutrient legacy.
Why more nutrients can mean less diversity
The nutrient pulse was associated with greater microbial activity, but lower microbial diversity—apparently because a few fast-growing species came to dominate. Plants showed a similar pattern: carcass sites became biodiversity coldspots, with relatively few fast-growing species prevailing.

That is the ecological trade-off. A carcass can create a concentrated source of nutrients and nutritious forage while simplifying the community of organisms living in the affected patch. Senior author Deron Burkepile described the effect on plant communities as essentially resetting them “to zero.”
How long did the effects last?
At the oldest sites the team visited, the soil and vegetation signal and the reduced-diversity pattern were still evident around eight years after the elephant’s death. Herbivores were still preferentially visiting those areas. Coauthor Izak Smit said the signal remained in soil and vegetation even at that point.

Eight years is the oldest time point described in the university report, not evidence that the effect ends then. The reported Kruger observations do not establish how long the legacy lasts at other sites, or whether it has the same size and duration across elephant populations and habitats.

The work connects several parts of the process: an initial bare patch, altered nutrients and microbes, a shift in plant composition, and recurring grazing. The researchers compare the phenomenon with a whale fall, in which a large carcass supports a distinctive community. But Kruger’s savanna is more fertile, and there the nutrient pulse can suppress diversity rather than simply sustain a different assemblage.

The team has established fenced exclosures to observe plant regrowth without herbivores, and further work is examining weather effects. Whether the pattern differs in forests, wetlands or deserts remains a hypothesis, not a demonstrated result from those ecosystems.
The detailed sample sizes, methods and uncertainty estimates are not specified in UC Santa Barbara’s public summary. The finding should therefore be read as a documented result from elephant carcass sites in Kruger, rather than a universal rule for every large animal carcass or landscape.
