Uplay became Ubisoft Connect. Ubisoft announced the change in October 2020, merging Uplay’s PC client and store with the Ubisoft Club rewards program. Ubisoft Connect launched on October 29, 2020, as a broader hub for Ubisoft games and player services.
What was Uplay?
Launched in 2012, Uplay was more than a rewards program. Ubisoft described it as an online services platform for PC and consoles, as well as a PC distribution platform. Players used it to access Ubisoft games and connected services.
Ubisoft Club was the separate rewards system. In 2020, the company brought the two together under the Ubisoft Connect name.
Why did Ubisoft replace Uplay with Ubisoft Connect?
The change combined services that had previously been split between the PC client and the Club rewards program, with the goal of making them feel more consistent across games and platforms. Ubisoft Connect carried forward Uplay’s client and storefront role while incorporating Club rewards and expanding social and cross-platform features.

Ubisoft Connect is Uplay’s successor, but it is broader than the old PC client. The transition retained Uplay’s role in managing and distributing Ubisoft games, while bringing in Ubisoft Club rewards and adding a more unified experience across games and platforms. Ubisoft’s 2021 retrospective described the transition as the merger of Uplay’s digital storefront and Ubisoft Club rewards.

Connect also includes features such as social activity, challenges, and rewards. Availability varies by game: Ubisoft says cloud-save synchronization is supported only for some titles. For supported games, cloud saves are enabled by default, and users can turn the feature off in the PC client settings. Cross-platform progression is likewise a feature for selected games, not a guarantee across the entire Ubisoft catalog.

UPLAY+ was renamed Ubisoft+ in October 2020 as Ubisoft aligned its subscription branding with the wider Connect ecosystem.
