Orkut itself shut down on September 30, 2014. Google said it preserved public community discussions in a separate Community Archive, but that archive was never a continuation of the Orkut service. The historical Google Takeout export window ended in September 2016, and Google’s current Help Center says Orkut profile items can no longer be saved. You may still be able to view public discussions through Google’s archive, although Google does not promise that every historical page or post remains available.
When and why Orkut closed
Google announced Orkut’s closure on June 30, 2014, giving existing users three months to move to other services. The company said new accounts could no longer be created after the announcement and that Orkut would close permanently on September 30, 2014. Engineering Director Paulo Golgher stated in the announcement, “We will shut down Orkut on September 30, 2014.” Google’s announcement attributed the decision to the growth of communities on YouTube, Blogger and Google+ and to Google’s choice to focus resources on those services.

What Google preserved in the Community Archive
Google’s September 30, 2014 preservation announcement described a public archive containing Orkut community material. At launch, Google reported 51 million communities, 120 million topics and more than 1 billion interactions. Those numbers were figures Google reported in 2014 about the archive at launch; they are not an independently verified present-day count.
The word public is important. Google’s preservation statement concerned public community content. It did not promise that private conversations, personal profile pages, scraps, friend lists or every other account feature would be available in the archive. A community’s public discussion history and an individual’s Orkut profile were separate kinds of data.

The archive also does not restore Orkut functions. There is no basis for treating it as a live service with account log-ins, new posts, messaging, friend management or community administration. It is best understood as a historical viewing location for material Google chose to preserve.
Can you still see old Orkut posts?
Google’s current Orkut Help Center says that public community discussions can be viewed in the Community Archive. That is Google’s documented route for looking for an old topic or reply.
- Open the Orkut Help Center and locate the Community Archive guidance.
- Follow Google’s archive link to the public community material.
- Navigate using the community, topic and discussion links that are available for the item you are seeking. The exact interface can change because the archive is a legacy service.
- If you find an important page, save a personal copy using your browser’s print-to-PDF or web-page-save function, subject to copyright and privacy rules. This creates your own copy; it does not change Google’s archive.
Do not assume that a missing result proves the post never existed. Google’s support documentation does not state that every historical page is still present, and the archive’s current completeness and operation have not been independently verified here. A broken link, an absent topic or a community that no longer loads can therefore have several explanations, including incomplete preservation or later removal.

What happened to Orkut profile data and downloads?
Google offered a temporary export route through Google Takeout. According to the shutdown and preservation announcements, users could export Orkut profile data, community posts and photos through Takeout until September 2016. That was a time-limited opportunity, not a permanent feature.
Google’s current Help Center now says that Orkut profile items can no longer be saved. Consequently, you should not expect a new Takeout export to retrieve an Orkut profile, and you should not interpret the existence of the Community Archive as a promise that profile data can be downloaded from it.
If you exported before the deadline
- Search the computer, external drive or cloud account where you stored your Takeout archive.
- Look for the original compressed download and any extracted folders containing profile data, photos or community material.
- Keep the files in more than one location if they are historically important, because Google’s current support statement does not provide a new recovery channel.
If you did not make an export by September 2016, the documented options are narrower: look for the public discussion in the Community Archive, or recover copies that you or another participant saved independently. The archive should not be described as a replacement for the expired Takeout download.

How to delete an Orkut community post
Google’s Help Center documents deletion of Orkut community posts through Google Account service deletion. The procedure is account-level rather than an Orkut editing screen, because the original service no longer operates.

- Sign in to the Google Account associated with the old Orkut activity.
- Open the Google Account area for deleting a Google service. Depending on the current account interface, this may appear under account data or privacy controls.
- Select the Orkut service if it is listed, then follow the confirmation steps described in Google’s Orkut Help Center.
- Allow time for the requested removal to be processed, and revisit the archive link if you need to check whether the public copy is still visible.
Google’s documentation is the controlling instruction for the current labels and confirmation screens. If Orkut is not shown in your account or the page behaves differently, use the Help Center’s current directions rather than relying on screenshots from the active-service era. Deleting an account-associated item is not the same as proving that every independently copied or quoted version on the internet has disappeared.
How to report abuse, copyright or legal problems
The Orkut Help Center also provides reporting routes for abuse and for copyright or other legal issues. Use the route that matches the problem and include the exact archive page, community and topic details requested by Google. A report is a request for review; it is not a guarantee that the material will be removed.

- Abuse: use Google’s abuse-reporting instructions when the archived material violates the applicable policy.
- Copyright: use the copyright process if you are the rights holder or authorized representative and the issue concerns protected work.
- Other legal issues: follow the legal-removal route when a different law or court process applies.
Because the archive contains historical discussions, preserve the page address and any relevant context before submitting a report. Do not post private personal information publicly in an attempt to identify an old account.
What the launch numbers do—and do not—tell you

These figures are useful historical context, but they should not be used to claim that 51 million communities, 120 million topics or one billion interactions remain browsable now. A launch announcement and a current inventory are different things.

Common misconceptions about Orkut’s disappearance
“The archive means Orkut is still online.”
No. Orkut closed on September 30, 2014. The archive is a separate preservation site for public community discussions, not a functioning social network.

“Google Takeout can still download my Orkut account.”
No. The export window ended in September 2016, and Google now says Orkut profile items can no longer be saved.
“Every post must still be there because Google preserved the communities.”
That conclusion is stronger than Google’s documentation supports. Google documented public-community preservation and present-day viewing guidance, but it did not promise that every page, post or media item would remain accessible forever.
“A profile and a community archive are the same thing.”
They are not. The archive concerns public community discussions, while profile data and personal items were covered by the historical Takeout export and are no longer savable through Google’s current process.
What remains possible in 2026
For a public discussion, the Community Archive is still Google’s documented place to look. For profile data, photos or other personal material, the realistic sources are a Takeout archive made before September 2016 or copies saved by you or another participant. For removal or reporting, use the current Google Help Center procedures rather than legacy Orkut instructions.
The most accurate description of Orkut’s legacy is therefore limited but useful: the social network ended in 2014; Google reported preserving a large body of public community history; and some of that history may still be viewable through the archive. Neither the launch statistics nor the archive promise unlimited access to every item that once existed.
