AI agents are safer when their authority is limited outside the model: give them only the tools and permissions they need, check authorization in application code or policy controls, treat retrieved content as untrusted, and require action-specific approval for consequential operations. Add output validation, careful audit logging, and adversarial testing before and after launch. A prompt can guide an agent, but it should not be the only barrier between a model and a sensitive action.
Why an AI agent needs more than a careful prompt
An agent can do more than produce text. Depending on its design, it may retrieve pages or documents, call tools, change data, or trigger operations in other services. That makes the security question broader than whether its answer sounds reasonable: what can it access, what can it change, and who verifies that a proposed action is allowed?
A prompt can describe the intended task and discourage unsafe behavior, but it is not a dependable authorization boundary. The model may misunderstand instructions, and content it reads can contain adversarial directions. OWASP guidance therefore emphasizes independent controls around permissions, tool use, and execution. The application or policy layer—not the model’s own assurance that an action is safe—should decide whether an operation is permitted.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Think of safety as a set of layers: limit authority before the model acts, inspect proposed actions before execution, constrain and validate outputs, and keep enough evidence to understand what happened. If one layer fails, another should still limit the damage.

Start with the smallest useful scope
Limit tools and resources by task
Give an agent only the tools required for its assigned job, and narrow the resources those tools can reach. A monitoring agent that reports configuration status generally does not need permission to change configuration or manage access. Where a task only requires reading, use read-only access rather than granting write capability “just in case.”
Apply the same principle to data. Restrict an agent to the relevant accounts, records, repositories, or service functions instead of giving it broad access to everything available to its underlying user or service identity. Separate capabilities when practical: an agent that summarizes a request need not also be able to approve it or execute the resulting transaction.
Make authorization a deterministic check
The model can propose an operation; a separate execution component should check whether the caller and agent are authorized to perform it. That check should consider the specific tool, target resource, requested operation, and applicable policy. Do not let a model-generated explanation or a “safe” label stand in for the authorization decision.
Recommended Free Tools
OWASP recommends operating agents under administrator change-management controls with additional automated guardrails, and calls for explicit approval for security-relevant changes. In practice, define which operations are allowed, which require an approval, and which are prohibited. Enforce those rules at the boundary where a tool call or change is actually carried out, not only in the instructions sent to the model.

Keep retrieved content from becoming an instruction source
Agents may read web pages, files, email, API responses, or other material that was not written by the system owner. Treat that material as untrusted data. It may contain text that tries to redirect the agent, disclose information, or persuade it to call a tool. The fact that an instruction appears in a retrieved document does not give it authority over the agent’s trusted instructions or policies.
OWASP Cornucopia, Agentic AI card AAI7, states: “Tool output must be treated as untrusted external data and handled with the same caution applied to any other user-supplied input.” Keep external content clearly separated from trusted instructions in the agent’s context, and constrain which actions can follow from it. A retrieved page may inform an answer, but it should not be able to expand the agent’s permissions or authorize a consequential operation.
Watch for action drift
Define the task’s intended boundary and monitor proposed actions against it. If a request is to summarize a document, a tool call that sends the document elsewhere or changes an account is outside that purpose unless separately authorized. Use allowlists for tools or action types where possible, and require confirmation when untrusted content could lead to a high-impact action.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Indirect prompt injection is not limited to websites. Any external content the agent reads—including documents and service responses—can attempt to influence its behavior. The useful defense is not merely to ask the model to ignore malicious text; it is to prevent such text from gaining authority over tool access and execution.

Choose autonomy by impact, reversibility, and privilege
Not every action deserves the same gate. Decide what an agent may do by weighing four factors: the potential impact, how reversible the action is, the privilege it requires, and whether untrusted external content triggered or influenced it. An action with low impact, easy reversal, and narrow permissions may be suitable for a constrained allowlist. A privileged, irreversible, externally visible, or security-relevant action deserves stronger controls.
- Lower-risk actions: Consider allowing narrowly scoped, reversible operations that do not expose sensitive data or change important settings, subject to the system’s policy.
- Higher-impact actions: Require review before financial, destructive, administrative, security-relevant, or externally visible operations.
- Prohibited actions: Block operations that fall outside the agent’s role or cannot be made acceptably safe through scope limits and review.
This is a policy decision, not a property the model can reliably settle for itself. OWASP’s guidance ties oversight to sensitive or high-impact actions and recommends minimum permissions. The organization deploying the agent must define what counts as consequential in its own environment.
Make human approval specific to the action
Human review is useful only if the reviewer can understand what they are approving and the system enforces that decision. Show the actual proposed operation, its target, relevant arguments, and the authority of the caller. A generic prompt asking a person whether the agent is safe is not a substitute for reviewing the operation itself.
- Prepare a concrete proposal. The agent or application should present the operation and the target it would affect, along with the arguments needed to understand its scope.
- Check the reviewer’s authority. Confirm that the person approving the action has permission to authorize that class of operation.
- Bind approval to the proposal. Record which specific action was approved. If the target or arguments change, require approval for the changed operation rather than reusing an earlier approval.
- Verify at execution. The execution layer should check the approval and authorization state immediately before carrying out the operation.
- Record the outcome. Keep an appropriate record of the approval decision and whether execution succeeded, was denied, or did not proceed.
For destructive, financial, administrative, or externally visible actions, OWASP’s Cheat Sheet recommends additional integrity controls beyond a simple approval prompt. A person’s click should not become an unbounded permission token: it should apply to the reviewed action and be checked at the point of execution.

Validate outputs before display or execution
Agent output can be malformed, out of scope, or unsafe to pass directly into another system. Validate it before displaying it in a sensitive context or using it to trigger an operation. Where a tool expects structured data, enforce a schema and reject responses that do not match it rather than trying to interpret an unexpected result permissively.
Validation should also bound what the agent can request. Set explicit limits on action type, scope, rate, or other relevant parameters. A validly formatted request can still be unauthorized, so schema validation does not replace access control or policy checks. Treat these as separate questions: is the output well formed, and is the requested action allowed?
When validation fails, fail closed for the consequential operation: do not execute an ambiguous or malformed request. Provide a safe error path, such as returning the agent’s proposal for correction or routing it to a reviewer. Avoid quietly broadening the action or guessing at missing arguments.

Keep records that can explain security-relevant decisions and actions. Depending on the system, useful events include the proposed action, authorization result, approval identifier, execution result, and policy version in force. These records help establish what the agent attempted, what the controls allowed, and where a failure occurred.

Logging should not become a new source of exposure. Exclude credentials, secrets, and sensitive content that is not needed for investigation. Limit access to logs and retain only what is appropriate for the organization’s security and operational needs. The goal is useful accountability, not indiscriminate storage of everything the agent read or generated.
Monitoring can also surface behavior outside the expected task boundary, such as attempted access to an unrelated resource or repeated requests for a restricted operation. A denial is not necessarily a system failure: it may show that an enforcement layer is working. Record relevant outcomes so operators can distinguish a blocked attempt from a successful action.
Test attacks and failure paths before and after launch
Test the controls with adversarial cases, not just normal requests. OWASP’s Cheat Sheet guidance includes testing for prompt injection, tool abuse, memory poisoning, and approval bypass. Use instrumented substitutes where appropriate so a test can observe whether an action would have occurred without risking real data or services.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuild tests around the boundaries
- Try direct and indirect prompt-injection cases, including malicious directions embedded in retrieved content.
- Check whether the agent can call tools or reach resources outside its intended scope.
- Test whether untrusted material can influence memory or later actions.
- Attempt to bypass approval, reuse an approval after action details change, or execute without valid authorization.
- Exercise malformed outputs, denials, timeouts, and circuit-breaker behavior to see whether the system stops safely.
Run these tests before production and repeat them after material changes to prompts, tools, memory, retrieval, policies, or model providers. Keep the tested versions, abuse cases, and observed outcomes—including approval, denial, timeout, or circuit-breaker behavior—so the organization can understand what was actually evaluated. A change that seems small in isolation can alter what content the model sees or what tools it can invoke.
What current standards work says—and does not say
NIST’s May 18, 2026 summary of responses to its request for information reports broad agreement among commenters that agents present novel security threats and that these concerns are a barrier to adoption. Respondents also said foundational cybersecurity practices need adaptation for agents. This summarizes what commenters said; it is not a measured prevalence rate or a quantified estimate of agent risk.
On February 5, 2026, NIST announced a concept paper identifying software-agent identification, authorization, auditing, and non-repudiation as areas for consideration, alongside controls to prevent and mitigate prompt injection. That announcement describes proposed work. It is not a completed certification or finalized standard that an organization can claim to meet.
The practical implication is to build on established security discipline while accounting for the agent’s ability to interpret content and invoke tools. Keep identities, authorization decisions, audit evidence, and action controls explicit rather than assuming that a model’s instructions alone provide them.
Quick Recap
A deployment checklist
- List the tools, resources, and actions the agent needs for its defined task.
- Remove unnecessary capabilities and use read-only access wherever writing is not needed.
- Enforce authorization independently of the model, at the tool or execution boundary.
- Separate trusted instructions from retrieved or tool-provided content, and treat the latter as untrusted.
- Set policy for which actions are allowed, approval-gated, or prohibited based on impact, reversibility, privilege, and external influence.
- Show reviewers the exact proposed operation and bind approval to its target and arguments.
- Validate outputs, use schemas where appropriate, and apply limits to action scope and rate.
- Log security-relevant decisions and outcomes while excluding secrets and unnecessary sensitive material.
- Test injection, tool abuse, memory poisoning, approval bypass, and safe failure behavior before launch and after material changes.
