GTA 6 is set in Vice City, a fictional city in the fictional state of Leonida—not in Miami under another name. Its South Florida-inspired setting draws on recognizable coastal scenery and architecture, but it compresses a much larger, more varied region into a game world. Comparing the two is useful when the distinction is clear: Rockstar establishes the fictional place names; readings of particular real-world landmarks in the trailers are interpretations.
What is Vice City based on?
Vice City is Rockstar’s fictional take on a South Florida city, with Miami as its most recognizable real-world reference. Rockstar’s official game page labels the setting “Vice City, USA,” while its Trailer 2 announcement describes a criminal conspiracy “stretching across the state of Leonida” and invites players to “Explore Vice City and beyond.” Those statements establish the names and fictional geography, not a promise that the game reproduces Miami street by street. That distinction matters because “Miami” can mean different things: the City of Miami, Miami-Dade County, or the broader South Florida region. Vice City can evoke the region without matching any one of those boundaries. Its visual shorthand—coast, dense urban scenery, and distinctive architecture—helps make the setting legible, while the real places behind those cues have their own histories, neighborhoods, and environmental pressures.

The official wording is a useful starting point for interpreting the game. “Leonida” gives the fictional setting a state-level frame, while “Vice City and beyond” signals that the fictional world extends past the city. It does not turn Leonida into a map of Florida or define exactly which real places correspond to each part of the game. Rockstar’s names establish the fiction; comparisons to Florida and Miami rely on the recognizable imagery and on reporting about the trailers.

Is Vice City supposed to be Miami?
It is best understood as inspired by Miami and South Florida, rather than as Miami itself. Rockstar names the fictional city and state but does not establish a one-to-one match for each real neighborhood or landmark. The game’s title and official descriptions support a fictional setting; they do not confirm that every recognizable view corresponds to a particular Miami location.
Trailer identifications should be treated in the same way. Axios identified South Beach Art Deco hotels near Lummus Park in the opening scene of the first trailer and asked Daniel Ciraldo, executive director of the Miami Design Preservation League, to assess the imagery. Ciraldo told Axios, “I must say the depictions are pretty exciting, it looks like they took the best of South Florida from the Everglades to South Beach and everything in between,” Axios’s 2023 trailer coverage. That is an expert’s reaction to the trailer, not a confirmation from Rockstar that the game depicts a complete map of South Florida.
There are two separate ideas in that response: recognizable South Beach imagery and the broader impression of a region stretching beyond the coast. The quote describes Ciraldo’s reaction to the trailer’s range of visual cues. It does not certify a list of locations, nor should it be read as a claim that the game reproduces the Everglades, South Beach, or the spaces between them exactly. That distinction lets readers enjoy the resemblance without turning visual interpretation into a factual map key.

What parts of Miami are in GTA 6?
The available evidence supports broad visual echoes, not a definitive checklist of real Miami places recreated in the game. South Beach-style Art Deco buildings are one of the most recognizable comparisons identified in reporting on the trailer. Other South Florida cues can suggest a wider regional landscape, but a resemblance in a frame is not enough to establish a specific real-world location.
For the real city, the City of Miami’s historic preservation materials identify several architectural traditions: Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, Craftsman, Bahamian or Conch, and Miami Modern. The city’s Art Deco examples date from 1929 to 1940 and use tropical and nautical motifs, including palms, flamingos, pelicans, the moon, and ocean themes. Bahamian or Conch homes are especially associated with Overtown and Coconut Grove; Miami Modern architecture developed from 1945 to 1965. City of Miami: Architectural Styles
Those motifs help explain why a building can read as distinctly South Floridian even when a scene does not identify its address. Tropical and nautical details draw from the surrounding environment, but Art Deco is only one strand of the region’s built history. Mediterranean Revival, Craftsman, Bahamian or Conch, and Miami Modern each offer a different visual vocabulary. A game may select and combine a few immediately legible cues; the real city’s architecture is not one uniform style.

The dates also matter when making the comparison. The City of Miami places its Art Deco examples in the years 1929–1940, while its Miami Modern examples date to 1945–1965. These are distinct periods, not interchangeable labels for any older-looking or colorful building. If a trailer frame resembles an Art Deco hotel, that resemblance points toward a particular architectural tradition; it does not mean every nearby structure shares that style or age.

These details make the real-world comparison richer than “neon and beaches.” Miami-Dade County’s architectural history traces regional development through Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco, Streamline Moderne, and Miami Modern, and describes adaptations to the climate, including jalousie windows that allow cross-breezes. Miami-Dade County: Architectural Styles A game can combine such visual cues into a coherent atmosphere; the real city’s built environment reflects distinct periods and practical responses to local conditions.
The county history adds another useful layer: the region’s architecture includes Streamline Moderne as well as the styles highlighted in the City of Miami materials. Jalousie windows are an example of design responding to local climate, rather than decoration alone. Together, the historic sources show why architecture can communicate both a place’s image and something about how buildings were adapted to their surroundings. They also caution against treating a fictional skyline as a complete inventory of Miami’s architecture.
Vice City is not the same size as Miami
The City of Miami is one municipality within the much larger Miami-Dade County, and neither term is interchangeable with all of South Florida. This is important when comparing a fictional game map with real population or area figures: a city-level statistic cannot describe the county or region.
The City of Miami’s 2024 report lists approximately 467,171 residents, 57.7 percent foreign born, and an area of 35.87 square miles. The report attributes the population figure to the University of Florida Bureau of Economic and Business Research. These are figures for the City of Miami, not Miami-Dade County, and they are dated estimates rather than a permanent description of who lives there. City of Miami: Statistical Profile
Those numbers answer different questions. The population figure describes the municipality’s reported residents, the area figure describes its land area, and the foreign-born share offers one measure of its population. None should be substituted for county totals or presented as a statistic for the whole South Florida region. The geography attached to a number is part of the number’s meaning, not a technical footnote.
Rank #3
- 8057168506976
- 10RID052
The foreign-born share is one indicator of the city’s diversity, not a complete account of its residents or a single cultural identity. A stylized game setting may communicate a sense of place through a small number of scenes and characters; a real city’s population and neighborhoods cannot be reduced to that shorthand.
The distinction is especially important when someone asks whether a fictional city “covers” Miami. The cited city report gives Miami a defined municipal area of 35.87 square miles; it does not tell us the size of Vice City’s game map or establish any scale match. Nor does the city’s population figure describe Miami-Dade County. Treat the real-world measures as context about Miami, not as a conversion chart for the game.
The sunny image leaves out real environmental risks
Coastal scenery is central to South Florida’s visual identity, but it exists alongside longstanding exposure to hurricanes, storm surge, and flooding. The City of Miami identifies those hazards and says climate change is a factor shaping the city’s future. City of Miami: Climate Ready Miami

A trailer can use sunlit streets and waterfront views to create atmosphere; those images do not communicate the full set of risks residents face. The city’s climate materials establish the hazards qualitatively, but do not, by themselves, support a numerical projection of sea-level rise or a particular flood probability.
It is worth keeping that limitation explicit. The source supports saying that hurricanes, storm surge, and flooding are longstanding vulnerabilities and that climate change shapes the city’s future. It does not support adding a specific projection or probability without another verified source. In a setting comparison, the responsible contrast is qualitative: the same coastal character that makes South Florida visually distinctive also comes with documented environmental exposure.
How to read GTA 6’s South Florida references
Use a simple evidence test when a scene looks familiar:

- Official setting: Rockstar’s materials establish Vice City and Leonida as fictional place names.
- Architectural resemblance: A recognizable style, such as South Beach Art Deco, can support a comparison to Miami without proving a specific address.
- Trailer interpretation: Landmark matches reported by journalists or discussed by local experts are attributed readings unless Rockstar confirms them.
- Real-world context: For population, architecture, or climate, check whether the source is describing the City of Miami, Miami-Dade County, or the wider region.
With those distinctions in place, Vice City’s relationship to Miami becomes clearer: it is a fictional setting built from familiar South Florida signals, while the real city is a geographically bounded municipality with layered architecture, a diverse population, and documented coastal hazards.

First ask what is officially established: Vice City and Leonida are the game’s names. Then ask what the image resembles: a style or coastal scene may evoke South Florida. Finally, ask who is making the identification and what geography their real-world source covers. That sequence separates a strong visual comparison from an unsupported claim about an exact address, boundary, or map.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the distinction matters to players
For players, the fictional names are not a reason to dismiss the real-world influence. They clarify what kind of relationship to expect: a designed setting that draws on recognizable cues, rather than a documentary reconstruction. The strongest comparisons are therefore specific and qualified—an Art Deco reference, a South Florida coastal atmosphere, or a trailer interpretation attributed to the outlet or expert who made it.
They also leave room for details beyond the best-known image of Miami. The preservation sources describe architectural traditions from several periods, including forms associated with Overtown and Coconut Grove and climate-responsive details such as jalousie windows. The population report and climate page add other dimensions: the municipality has a measurable, diverse population and faces documented coastal hazards. A fictional city can suggest some of these themes, but no single visual cue stands in for the whole place.
That is the most grounded way to read the setting before exploring it in the game: recognize the South Florida references, keep official statements separate from trailer analysis, and use real sources with their correct geographic and temporal scope. Vice City can feel familiar precisely because it borrows from a recognizable region, while remaining a fictional place with its own boundaries and design.
