Can you play GTA 6 with your friends? Not based on the information officially available as of October 13, 2026. PlayStation’s GTA VI FAQ and Take-Two Interactive’s launch announcement both describe the game as a single-player experience. Neither source confirms an online mode, co-op campaign, private lobbies, shared sessions, or cross-play.
That means a November 19, 2026 purchase is currently confirmed to include the story campaign—not a promised multiplayer service. A reported 2027 multiplayer window comes from Twitch CEO Dan Clancy in a PC Gamer report, not from Rockstar Games, so it should not be treated as a release commitment.
What Rockstar and the publishers have actually confirmed
The clearest answer comes from the official PlayStation Canada product page and FAQ. Asked whether Grand Theft Auto VI has multiplayer modes or features, the page answers: “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.” Take-Two uses nearly identical wording in its June 24, 2026 announcement, calling GTA VI “a single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.”

Therefore, the practical answer for launch planning is straightforward: buy GTA VI expecting a solo game. Do not buy it on the assumption that you and friends will be able to join the same world on day one.
What “single-player” means for friends
Watching or taking turns is possible, but not online play
A single-player designation normally means one active player controls the game at a time. Friends can still watch, discuss choices, or take turns on a console, but those activities are different from an online session in which each person has a character or shared progression.
Two protagonists do not prove co-op
Jason and Lucia’s partnership may create missions that involve both characters, but the available descriptions do not establish simultaneous control by two players. Until Rockstar publishes a feature list or demonstration that says otherwise, treat the pair as narrative protagonists in a solo campaign.

A GTA+ offer is not an online-mode announcement
The PlayStation page lists a pre-order offer for one month of GTA+, subject to eligibility and dates. That promotion does not establish that GTA VI includes online features. GTA+ benefits, where applicable, should not be interpreted as proof of a new multiplayer service.

Which GTA 6 friend-play features remain unconfirmed?
The official material reviewed does not answer the separate questions that players commonly bundle under “multiplayer.” Each feature below requires its own Rockstar announcement.

What the reported 2027 multiplayer claim means
On September 17, 2026, PC Gamer reported comments from Twitch CEO Dan Clancy. Clancy said, “You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.” In context, “next year” points to 2027.
That statement is useful as an indication of what one industry executive expects, but it is not a Rockstar announcement. The same report says Rockstar had not officially announced GTA VI multiplayer or its timing. It does not establish a month, a launch-day feature, a beta, supported platforms, a player count, or the business relationship between a future GTA VI service and GTA Online.

A retailer listing, social-media rumor, or third-party comment cannot fill in the missing specifications.

Where friends can play GTA VI at launch
Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PlayStation product page lists PS5 and PS5 Pro and explicitly says GTA VI is not playable on PS4. The confirmed platform information is:

Both console families being listed does not mean PlayStation and Xbox players will share servers. Cross-play requires technical support and a platform policy that Rockstar must identify. The same caution applies to cross-generation play: PS5 availability does not imply a PS4 version.
Release date, price, and physical format
Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 announcement schedules GTA VI for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It lists a US price of $79.99. Those are launch-announcement details; local currency, taxes, retailer pricing, editions, and promotions can differ and should be checked at purchase.
The announcement says the physical version becomes available starting November 12 to support pre-loading and contains a download code inside the box. In other words, a physical box may not contain a game disc with the complete installation; the code is the mechanism described by the publisher.

None of these purchase details includes a promise of multiplayer. If your buying decision depends on playing with friends, the decisive information is a future multiplayer announcement, not the format or pre-order bonus.

Buy now if you want the confirmed solo campaign
A pre-order is rational for someone who wants the Leonida story, Jason and Lucia’s campaign, and a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S release on November 19, 2026. The current official description supports that use case.
Wait if shared play is the reason you are buying
If your main requirement is an online world, co-op missions, or a private session with friends, wait for Rockstar to specify those features. Otherwise, you would be paying for a product whose central social function is still unknown.
Do not buy hardware solely for unannounced multiplayer
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are the confirmed launch consoles. Buying one can prepare you for GTA VI generally, but neither console purchase guarantees access to a future online mode, cross-play, or a particular release window.

What a proper multiplayer announcement should tell you
When Rockstar provides more information, look for answers to each of these practical questions rather than relying on a headline that simply says “online.”
- Mode and timing: Is multiplayer included at launch, added later, or still in development?
- Player structure: Does it support co-op missions, a persistent open world, competitive modes, or several of these?
- Group tools: Are parties, friend invites, private lobbies, crews, and invite-only sessions available?
- Progression: Is progress shared with the campaign, kept separate, or carried between multiple characters?
- Platform support: Are PS5 and Xbox Series X|S both supported, and are there restrictions between them?
- Cross-play and cross-progression: Can people on different platforms play together, and can an account carry progress across systems?
- Access requirements: Are a platform subscription, GTA+ membership, or a separate purchase required?
- Connection to GTA Online: Does the new service coexist with, replace, or remain separate from the existing game?
These details determine whether your friends can actually meet in the same session. A launch date alone does not answer them.
What is known about the existing GTA Online service
The available GTA VI announcements do not say whether a future GTA VI online mode will connect to, replace, or coexist with GTA Online. They also do not explain whether characters, currency, properties, crews, or other progression would transfer. Do not assume that an existing GTA Online account will carry forward or that a future service will be an automatic replacement.

For now, keep the two products conceptually separate: GTA VI is officially presented as a new single-player game, while the future of any GTA VI multiplayer offering has not been specified.

As of October 13, 2026, GTA VI is officially a single-player experience launching on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19. No official source reviewed confirms online play, campaign co-op, private lobbies, cross-play, or a connection to GTA Online. Dan Clancy’s reported 2027 comment is an unconfirmed expectation, not a Rockstar schedule. Plan your purchase around the solo campaign unless and until Rockstar publishes a detailed multiplayer announcement.
