Short answer: Grand Theft Auto V lets you change controls, audio, camera, display and other play settings from the Pause Menu, but Rockstar’s documented settings information does not describe a switch that removes mature scenes from Story Mode. Privacy controls affect profile visibility, and platform privacy settings can restrict access to some GTA Online community content. They should not be treated as a violence, language, nudity or sexual-content filter.
What the game’s Settings menu actually controls
Rockstar says that “The settings for GTAV can be changed within the Pause Menu when in Story Mode or Online.” Open the Pause Menu during play, select Settings, and choose the category containing the option you want. Rockstar’s support article, last updated April 20, 2024, gives controls, audio, camera and display as examples of the available categories: Adjusting settings within GTAV.

The wording matters. Rockstar presents those categories as examples rather than a complete list for every console, PC build or edition. Menus can therefore vary by platform and software version. The support page does not document a dedicated mature-content, violence, language, nudity or sexual-content filter. That is evidence about what Rockstar documents, not proof that every possible menu item is identical on every build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChanging a normal gameplay or presentation option
- Enter either Story Mode or GTA Online.
- Press the button or key that opens the Pause Menu for your platform.
- Select Settings.
- Open the relevant category, such as controls, audio, camera or display.
- Change the option, then return to the game. If a setting is unavailable in the current mode, check it again from the mode in which you intend to play.
These options can make the game easier to control, quieter, more legible or visually different. They do not change the script, dialogue, missions, cutscenes, radio material or other authored content in Story Mode.

- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Can you turn off mature content in Story Mode?
Do not assume that a graphics, audio or gameplay setting is a content filter. Rockstar’s documented settings guidance does not describe a Story Mode switch that removes mature scenes. The official material reviewed here also does not establish that changing privacy options, blocking players or restricting online community content changes the authored scenes in the single-player campaign.
That distinction is important for parents, households sharing a console and anyone deciding whether the game is appropriate. You may be able to reduce volume, disable particular interface features or change camera behavior, but those adjustments do not make the underlying Story Mode content suitable for a younger player. Because Rockstar’s support page is an example-based overview, avoid treating it as a guarantee that every platform has exactly the same menu; equally, do not promise that a hidden filter exists.
Story Mode and Online are separate questions
Story Mode contains Rockstar-authored missions, dialogue, cutscenes, television, radio and scripted encounters. GTA Online adds player interaction and community-created material. A control that limits what an account can see online is not automatically a control over the single-player campaign. Check which mode the concern relates to before changing a setting.

- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.

What Rockstar privacy settings can change
Rockstar documents privacy and user-generated-content controls separately from the in-game Settings menu. They govern account visibility and some player-created material, not the mature scenes written into GTA V. Rockstar says these profile areas can be limited through Privacy Settings:
- Profile Page and Info. You can restrict selected profile information.
- My Wall. You can limit who can access your wall.
- Single Player and Profile Page game statistics. You can limit access to these statistics.
The same explanation lists information that can remain visible, including Crew membership, comments you made on another user’s wall and multiplayer data. Therefore, setting a profile to a more private level does not hide every trace of an account or every interaction.
Why blocking is not a content filter
Blocking another player is an account-management and interaction control. Rockstar states that blocking does not stop that player from viewing or commenting on user-generated content. It is consequently not a reliable way to remove offensive material from GTA Online, and it has no documented effect on Story Mode scenes.

| In-game Settings menu | Gameplay and presentation categories such as controls, audio, camera and display, reachable from the Pause Menu in Story Mode or Online. | That a mature-content filter is documented for every platform or version. |

| Block player | Account-level interaction control. | Guaranteed removal of another player’s UGC from view; Rockstar says blocked players may still view or comment on UGC. |
| ESRB rating | A public age classification and content summary. | An in-game toggle or parental-control setting. |
GTA Online community content and Xbox app for PC
Online Jobs, Crews and other community creations are a different access issue. Rockstar says that, when playing GTA Online through the Xbox app on PC, access to Jobs or Crews depends on correctly configured user-generated-content settings and can also be limited by Xbox privacy and online-safety settings. The relevant Xbox option is labeled “You can see and upload community creations.” Rockstar gives Everyone as the selection that allows this UGC access. See the platform-specific instructions in Accessing Jobs or Crews while playing GTA Online on the Xbox app on PC, last updated June 17, 2025.

- Confirm that you are playing GTA Online through the Xbox app on PC, if that is your setup.
- Review the in-game UGC or privacy-related setting and make sure it is not denying community creations.
- Open the Xbox privacy and online-safety settings for the account.
- Find You can see and upload community creations and select Everyone if the account is permitted to access community content.
- Restart the game or sign in again, then check the Job or Crew list.
Account age restrictions, family controls or a platform policy can still prevent access. A successful UGC setting change only affects community-created material; it does not rewrite Story Mode or remove Rockstar-authored violence, language, nudity or sexual content.
Reporting offensive material is different from filtering it
GTA Online provides reporting routes for abusive communication and offensive player-created content. Rockstar’s listed report categories include violent or gory content and adult nudity or sexual content. Reporting sends material to a moderation process; it is not a switch that pre-screens or edits the game’s authored campaign. Instructions and categories are in Reporting content and behavior in Grand Theft Auto Online, last updated December 5, 2025.

- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
If the concern is another player’s message, wall post, job or other UGC, use the report function and the platform’s blocking or privacy tools as appropriate. If the concern is a scripted mission or cutscene, reporting cannot remove it from Story Mode.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board rates Grand Theft Auto V M for Mature 17+. Its descriptors are Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. The rating is an expectation-setting summary, not a list of switches available in the Settings menu. The full rating record is at the ESRB Grand Theft Auto V rating.

How the ESRB describes the nudity and mature humor
The ESRB summary says nudity appears primarily in a topless lap dance at a strip club and at a location involving male cult members whose genitalia are exposed in a non-sexual context. It also notes mature humor in some cutscenes, television programs and radio advertisements. Those examples help you judge the game’s tone, but they do not imply that only those scenes are mature or that a setting can selectively disable them.
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
The “17+” number is the ESRB’s age category. It is not a study statistic and does not mean that every person aged 17 or older will find the game appropriate. Consider the complete descriptor list, the player’s maturity and whether the account will access GTA Online.
Practical choices for parents and players
If you are trying to make Story Mode suitable for a younger player
- Do not rely on the Settings menu to remove mature scenes; the documented information does not establish such a feature.
- Use the ESRB descriptors and summary to decide whether the game belongs in the household.
- If the game is installed on a shared device, remember that reducing volume or changing display options leaves scripted content unchanged.
- Use the console or PC’s broader family and account controls for access management, while recognizing that they are not a guaranteed editor for Story Mode content.
If your concern is GTA Online
- Separate player-created content from Rockstar-authored missions and scenes.
- Use Rockstar privacy settings to limit the profile, wall and statistics categories they cover.
- Configure platform UGC and online-safety settings when Jobs or Crews are unavailable.
- Report offensive UGC or communication; blocking alone does not guarantee that UGC becomes invisible.
Buying the game with these limits in mind
Rockstar’s store listing presents Grand Theft Auto V by platform and identifies its mature-content classification. Before purchasing, verify the edition and platform shown for your device in the current listing: Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. A purchase provides access to the listed game and modes; it should not be interpreted as including a mature-content filter.
Bottom line for the settings question
Use the Pause Menu Settings for controls, audio, camera and display changes. Use Rockstar Privacy Settings and platform privacy controls for profile visibility and GTA Online community-content access. Use reporting tools for offensive player-created material. None of those documented controls should be presented as a way to strip mature content from GTA V’s authored Story Mode, and the ESRB’s M 17+ rating describes the content you should expect rather than offering a toggle.
