The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) uses the integrated AMD Radeon GPU built into its AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. ASUS ROG Canada lists that graphics implementation as AMD RDNA 3 with 12 compute units, a maximum clock of 2.7 GHz and up to 8.6 teraflops. Those are vendor specifications, not independent game benchmarks, and the figures should not be treated as a guarantee of a particular frame rate.
The direct answer: an integrated AMD Radeon GPU
In the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X, graphics processing is supplied by AMD Radeon Graphics integrated into the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme system processor. There is no separate graphics card installed inside the handheld. The CPU and GPU are parts of the same processor platform, while the console’s memory and power budget are shared by the whole system.
ASUS’s Canadian technical specification for model RC73XA identifies the integrated GPU as AMD RDNA 3, 12 compute units, up to 2.7 GHz and up to 8.6 teraflops. ASUS’s US specification page uses the shorter name “AMD Radeon Graphics” and does not repeat the architecture, compute-unit, clock or teraflops details. Therefore, the detailed figures should be attributed to the Canadian listing rather than presented as identical wording on every regional page.

What the published GPU specifications mean
| Specification | 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA) | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| GPU name | AMD Radeon Graphics | Integrated graphics within the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor |
| Graphics architecture | AMD RDNA 3 | The architecture named by ASUS ROG Canada |
| Compute units | 12 | Parallel graphics-processing units used for shader and compute work |
| Maximum GPU clock | Up to 2.7 GHz | A peak specification; the actual clock varies with power, temperature and workload |
| Peak throughput | Up to 8.6 teraflops | A theoretical vendor figure, not a measured frame-rate result |
| System memory | 24 GB LPDDR5X-8000 | High-speed system memory available to the platform; it is not dedicated VRAM on a separate card |
| Display | 7-inch, 1,920 × 1,080, 120 Hz | The panel’s maximum resolution and refresh rate, not a promise that every game runs at 120 frames per second |
“Up to” is important in both the clock and teraflops entries. A handheld can reduce processor power or clock speed to control heat, noise and battery drain. A game can also be limited by CPU work, memory traffic, storage streaming or software settings before the GPU reaches its theoretical peak.
How integrated graphics work in this handheld
The GPU shares the processor platform
A discrete desktop graphics card has its own processor board and dedicated video memory. The Ally X instead places the Radeon graphics engine inside the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme package. The operating system schedules CPU and GPU work on one platform, and both parts draw from the handheld’s finite power and cooling capacity.
The 24 GB LPDDR5X-8000 memory specification describes the system’s fast memory pool. Because the GPU is integrated, graphics data, game assets and CPU workloads use that platform memory rather than memory mounted on a separate graphics card. The amount available to a game can change as Windows, background applications and the graphics driver reserve memory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRendering a frame
- The game asks the CPU to handle simulation, input, game logic and draw-call preparation.
- The Radeon graphics engine converts those commands into geometry, shading, textures and other pixels.
- Rendered frames are written to system memory and sent to the internal 1,920 × 1,080 display.
- The display refreshes at up to 120 Hz when the game and the selected display mode can supply frames quickly enough.
This shared design makes a compact handheld possible, but it also means that CPU and GPU demand compete for the same thermal and electrical envelope. Increasing a game’s resolution or visual quality raises graphics work; background CPU activity can reduce the headroom left for the GPU.
Why compute units and teraflops are not an FPS rating
Compute-unit count describes the parallel resources in the graphics engine. Teraflops estimate floating-point operations per second under an idealized calculation based on resources and clock speed. Neither number captures every part of a modern game renderer. Memory behavior, shader efficiency, API overhead, asset streaming, CPU limits, frame pacing and the game’s own engine all affect the result.
For that reason, 8.6 teraflops cannot by itself establish whether a particular title reaches 30, 60 or 120 frames per second. A meaningful test must identify the game, resolution, quality preset, operating mode, power source, driver version and measurement method.
Display and memory context
The 1080p, 120 Hz panel
The Ally X has a 7-inch 1,920 × 1,080 display with a 120 Hz maximum refresh rate. Rendering at the panel’s native resolution produces a sharper image than rendering below it, but it also requires more pixel work. A game may choose a lower internal resolution, an upscaling mode or a lower refresh target to fit the handheld’s power budget.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A 120 Hz panel can display a new refresh cycle every 8.33 milliseconds, but the GPU must actually produce frames at a matching cadence for the benefit to be visible. If a title runs at 40 or 60 FPS, the higher-refresh panel can still improve interface responsiveness and provide flexible refresh options, but it does not create additional frames.

LPDDR5X-8000 system memory
ASUS lists 24 GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory. That capacity supports a Windows handheld running a game, the operating system and background services together, while the integrated GPU uses the same memory pool for graphics data. It is not equivalent to a discrete card with a separately specified VRAM capacity, so comparisons should name the entire platform and memory configuration rather than compare only a VRAM number.
Graphics features exposed by ASUS software
ASUS says Armoury Crate Special Edition supports Radeon features including Radeon Super Resolution (RSR), Radeon Image Sharpening (RIS) and AMD Fluid Motion Frames. These features can alter how a game is rendered or presented:
- RSR can upscale a lower-resolution game image to the display resolution when the game does not provide its own compatible temporal upscaler.
- RIS applies sharpening to improve perceived detail after scaling or at a lower render resolution.
- AMD Fluid Motion Frames is a frame-generation feature that can add generated frames to supported output paths. Generated frames do not replace the underlying rendering work and can have different latency and artifact characteristics from fully rendered frames.
Availability and behavior depend on the game, driver and selected mode. ASUS’s feature support is not evidence that a specific title reaches a specific frame rate, nor does enabling a feature remove the need to choose an appropriate base resolution and quality setting.

ASUS also describes ROG XG Mobile as an optional external graphics expansion that connects to the Ally X through USB4. The 2025 XG Mobile can add an external GPU option listed by ASUS as up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. That hardware is outside the handheld and is not part of the built-in Radeon graphics configuration.
With an external unit attached, games can use the external graphics processor when the software and connection are configured for it. Without that accessory, the Ally X continues to use the integrated AMD Radeon GPU in the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme. Any comparison between the two must identify the external model, USB4 connection and power arrangement; it is not a comparison between two internal GPU modes.
What you can and cannot upgrade
Storage can be expanded
The global ROG product overview lists a 1 TB M.2 2280 SSD, and ASUS’s FAQ says the drive is upgradeable because it uses the standard 2280 form factor. A compatible PCIe Gen4 M.2 2280 SSD can therefore increase game-storage capacity, subject to the manufacturer’s installation and recovery guidance.
The integrated GPU is not a replaceable part
Replacing the SSD does not add graphics horsepower. The Radeon GPU is integrated into the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor platform, so there is no internal graphics card to remove or swap. More storage can reduce the need to uninstall games, but it does not increase compute units, GPU clock or teraflops.

- Start with the game’s resolution. Try the panel’s 1,920 × 1,080 mode first, then lower the internal or output resolution if the frame rate is unstable.
- Select a sensible frame-rate target. A locked 30, 40 or 60 FPS target can produce steadier pacing than allowing an underpowered title to fluctuate toward 120 Hz.
- Reduce expensive settings in order. Shadow quality, volumetric effects, reflections, ambient occlusion and view distance commonly add substantial GPU work; lower those before removing texture detail if memory capacity is sufficient.
- Use an upscaler when available. Prefer a game’s own supported upscaler when it offers one; otherwise evaluate RSR and RIS through Armoury Crate Special Edition.
- Test with the intended power mode. Battery operation, a plugged-in profile and any silent, performance or turbo mode can change the power available to the processor.
- Check temperatures and frame pacing. A short peak reading is less useful than observing whether clocks and frame times remain stable during a longer play session.
These steps are a tuning method, not a performance promise. The same settings can produce different results in different games because engines place different demands on the CPU, GPU and memory system.

How to compare the Ally X with another handheld
Compare complete, like-for-like configurations rather than isolated teraflops claims. A useful comparison records:
- the exact model year and processor, such as RC73XA with Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme;
- GPU architecture and compute-unit count;
- memory capacity and speed, including whether memory is shared or dedicated;
- the tested power mode, charger or battery condition and thermal profile;
- game version, graphics driver, resolution, quality preset and upscaling setting;
- average FPS, one-percent-low FPS and frame-time behavior from a controlled test.
A vendor specification such as 8.6 teraflops is useful for identifying the hardware class. It is not a substitute for an independent test performed under stated conditions. Do not compare the Ally X’s integrated Radeon GPU directly with an external XG Mobile GPU without separating the two configurations.
Common misunderstandings and fixes
“The 120 Hz screen means games run at 120 FPS.”
No. The panel can refresh up to 120 times per second. Game output still depends on rendering workload, selected settings and the available power budget.
“8.6 teraflops tells me exactly how a game will perform.”
No. It is a theoretical peak listed by ASUS ROG Canada. Use a test that states the game, resolution, settings, power mode and measurement method.
“Installing a faster SSD upgrades the graphics.”
No. The SSD is a storage device. The integrated Radeon GPU remains part of the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor.
“XG Mobile is the Ally X’s built-in GPU.”
No. XG Mobile is optional external hardware connected over USB4. The handheld’s internal GPU is the AMD Radeon implementation specified for the processor.
“The Canadian and US specification pages prove different GPUs.”
Not necessarily. The pages use different levels of detail: the Canadian listing supplies the RDNA 3, 12-CU, 2.7-GHz and 8.6-teraflop figures, while the US page names AMD Radeon Graphics without repeating them. The regional wording difference alone does not establish different hardware.

Bottom line
The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA) uses AMD Radeon integrated graphics in the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. ASUS ROG Canada’s published configuration specifies RDNA 3, 12 compute units, up to 2.7 GHz and up to 8.6 teraflops. Its 24 GB LPDDR5X-8000 memory and 1,920 × 1,080, 120 Hz display provide the surrounding platform context, but they do not guarantee native-resolution 120-FPS gaming. Treat the teraflops figure as a hardware specification, tune each game for its power mode and workload, and keep optional USB4-connected XG Mobile graphics separate from the built-in GPU.
