Geomagnetic storms can degrade GPS/GNSS accuracy, disrupt some radio services, induce damaging currents in power grids and pipelines, and increase atmospheric drag on low-Earth-orbit satellites. The actual outcome depends on storm intensity, latitude, local time, system design and whether the disturbance is an ionospheric, magnetic, atmospheric or radiation effect. A storm is not a universal explanation for every radio blackout or satellite fault: solar-flare X-rays primarily cause sunlit-side radio blackouts, while energetic particles create separate radiation risks.
NOAA describes geomagnetic storms as disturbances in Earth’s magnetosphere. Energy and currents move through the magnetosphere and ionosphere, heating the upper atmosphere, changing plasma conditions and producing magnetic changes at the ground. Those linked processes explain why one event can affect navigation signals, long conductors and spacecraft in different ways. NOAA’s overview is available at NOAA’s Geomagnetic Storms page.
Which systems are vulnerable, and why?
| System | Primary mechanism | Where exposure is greatest | Possible result |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPS/GNSS | Storm-driven ionospheric irregularities change signal delay and scintillation | Anywhere receivers rely on disturbed ionospheric corrections; effects can be especially difficult at high latitudes | Position errors, loss of lock or intermittent service |
| HF radio | Changed ionospheric propagation, absorption and particle-related disturbances | High latitudes; the sunlit side is especially exposed to flare-produced X-rays | Weak, distorted or absent links |
| Power grids and pipelines | Geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) in long conductors | Long transmission lines, pipelines and regions with conductive ground | Voltage-control problems, transformer stress, protective-system trips or outages |
| Satellites | Thermospheric expansion increases drag; energetic particles affect electronics | Low-Earth orbit for drag; spacecraft with sensitive components for radiation | Orbit decay, tracking difficulty, resets, degradation or component damage |
These are different failure paths, not one universal ranking. NOAA’s impact information distinguishes ionospheric signal distortion, radio absorption, induced ground current, atmospheric drag and radiation effects at Space Weather Impacts and The Effects of Space Weather on Earth.
How a geomagnetic storm produces these effects
Coronal mass ejections and magnetospheric energy
A coronal mass ejection (CME) can carry magnetic fields and plasma from the Sun toward Earth. When the arriving field couples strongly with Earth’s magnetosphere, currents and energy circulate through the magnetosphere and ionosphere. The upper atmosphere heats and expands, while magnetic-field changes at the ground drive currents in conductive infrastructure.

Keep the space-weather causes separate
“Space weather” is the umbrella term. A geomagnetic storm mainly describes disturbances in Earth’s magnetic environment, with consequences for navigation, grids, pipelines, auroras and some communications. A solar flare produces X-rays that can degrade or black out high-frequency (HF) radio on the sunlit side within the affected region. Energetic particles can create radiation hazards for spacecraft and high-latitude communications. These phenomena can occur together, but attributing every impact to the geomagnetic storm itself is inaccurate. NOAA summarizes the distinctions at its space-weather impacts page.
GPS and other GNSS signals
Why positioning becomes less reliable
GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and other GNSS signals travel through the ionosphere. Receivers normally model the ionosphere’s delay, but storm-time plasma gradients and irregularities make those corrections less accurate. Rapid changes can also cause scintillation: the signal’s amplitude and phase fluctuate, increasing the chance that a receiver loses lock.
How large can the error be?
NOAA reports that, during severe space weather, single-frequency GPS errors can rise from a meter or less in calm conditions to tens of meters or more. That is a reported severe-event range, not an error that occurs during every storm or at every location. Dual-frequency receivers can measure the ionospheric delay more directly and reduce this source of error, but they are not immune to severe disturbances. NOAA’s technical explanation is at Space Weather and GPS Systems.

What users may notice
- A navigation application may show a position that jumps or lags behind the actual location.
- Surveying, precision agriculture, aviation, maritime operations and timing systems may lose the accuracy margin they normally expect.
- A receiver can report an intermittent fix or fail to acquire satellites when signal fluctuations become severe.
These symptoms can also have ordinary causes such as obstruction, multipath reflections, receiver faults or poor antenna placement. A storm alert establishes a possible environmental cause, not proof that a particular device failed because of it.

Radio communications
HF is the key vulnerable band
HF (roughly 3–30 MHz) depends on ionospheric reflection and refraction. Geomagnetic disturbances can alter the ionosphere enough to make propagation unpredictable, particularly along high-latitude paths. A link may become noisy, shift frequency, cover a shorter distance or disappear.
Do not call every blackout a geomagnetic-storm effect
NOAA attributes many rapid, sunlit-side HF blackouts to X-rays from solar flares rather than to the later geomagnetic storm. Energetic particles also affect high-latitude communications. The band, path, local time and event type therefore matter; “radio” does not mean every AM, FM, television, satellite or cellular service will fail. NOAA’s descriptions are at Space Weather Impacts and The Effects of Space Weather on Earth.
Operational planning
Organizations that depend on HF should monitor propagation advisories, maintain alternate paths where feasible and avoid treating a single frequency as guaranteed. A local VHF or UHF system, fiber connection or satellite link has its own vulnerabilities and should be evaluated separately rather than assumed to be a universal substitute.
Power grids and pipelines
How geomagnetically induced currents enter infrastructure
Rapid changes in the ground magnetic field induce low-frequency currents in long conductors. Transmission lines, transformer windings, pipelines and other extended networks can carry these geomagnetically induced currents. In transformers, unwanted current can drive heating, abnormal magnetic operation and protective-system responses.

What a severe event can do
NOAA’s G-scale runs from G1 through G5. At the extreme G5 level, its scale says widespread voltage-control and protective-system problems can occur; some grid systems may collapse or experience blackouts. It also lists degraded satellite navigation and HF propagation that may be impossible in many areas for one to two days. These are potential impacts at the top of the scale, not a promise that every G5 storm produces a continent-wide outage. See NOAA Space Weather Scales.
Why household power loss is not automatic
Risk depends on line length, transformer characteristics, grounding, geology, network topology, protection settings and the operator’s response. A storm can stress equipment without interrupting customers, while a vulnerable network can experience a localized outage. Ordinary distribution faults, weather and equipment failures remain separate explanations.
The Quebec example
During a geomagnetic-storm-related failure in March 1989, millions of people in Quebec lost power. NOAA’s explainer gives the outage duration as nine hours. This is a documented historical case, not a prediction for a future storm. The account appears in NOAA’s material on space weather at What Is Space Weather? and Space weather: Storms from the Sun.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPipelines face a related, but distinct, concern
Induced currents can enter pipelines and complicate corrosion-control measurements and monitoring. The exposure is an infrastructure-engineering issue; it does not mean a storm will make household plumbing or every pipeline unsafe.

Satellites and spacecraft
Atmospheric drag in low-Earth orbit
Geomagnetic energy heats the thermosphere, causing the upper atmosphere to expand. At a given altitude, a low-Earth-orbit satellite then encounters more atmospheric drag. Operators may see faster orbit decay, greater propellant use, tracking errors or the need for additional orbit maintenance. The effect is strongest for satellites in lower orbits and depends on spacecraft area, mass, altitude and the storm’s intensity.
Radiation and energetic particles
Energetic particles can cause single-event upsets, charging, sensor anomalies and cumulative damage to electronic components. These are radiation effects, not atmospheric drag, and they do not affect every spacecraft equally. Shielding, circuit design, mission duration and orbit determine susceptibility. NOAA discusses both mechanisms at The Effects of Space Weather on Earth.
What satellite users may observe
- Temporary loss of a data stream or navigation service.
- Lower pointing or tracking accuracy while the spacecraft’s orbit estimate changes.
- Unexpected resets or corrupted data in a radiation-sensitive system.
A ground receiver outage can also result from a terrestrial network problem, antenna obstruction or spacecraft maintenance. A storm is one possible cause among several.

- Latitude: Magnetic disturbances and particle precipitation are often strongest toward the poles, making high-latitude radio and navigation operations especially sensitive.
- Sunlit side: Flare X-rays can cause immediate HF absorption on the daylight side, before or independently of the later geomagnetic storm phase.
- Orbit: Atmospheric drag primarily concerns low-Earth orbit; higher-orbit spacecraft do not experience the same drag increase.
- System design: Dual-frequency navigation, transformer design, shielding, grounding and operational procedures change the outcome.
- Storm phase and duration: Rapid magnetic changes can drive currents, while prolonged heating can continue to affect the thermosphere and satellite orbits.
Current alerts and measurements change continuously. For an active event, use NOAA’s space-weather resources and the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center impacts guidance rather than relying on a general article.
What can organizations do?
Navigation and timing users
- Track NOAA space-weather watches, warnings and alerts for the operating region.
- Use dual-frequency or multi-constellation receivers when the application justifies the cost and verify that the software actually uses the additional measurements.
- Set integrity limits and alarms so that an implausible position is rejected instead of silently accepted.
- Keep an independent timing or navigation source for safety-critical operations where practical.
Radio operators
- Check HF propagation advisories and solar-flare alerts.
- Prepare alternate frequencies, routes or communication methods.
- Record time, frequency, location and signal symptoms; this helps distinguish ionospheric disruption from local equipment faults.
Grid, pipeline and satellite operators
- Use established space-weather procedures and operator-specific thresholds rather than consumer advice.
- Review transformer, pipeline and spacecraft telemetry for abnormal current, temperature, drag or radiation indicators.
- Apply tested protective actions, including load, voltage, orbit or attitude adjustments where the mission plan allows.
- After the event, inspect logs and equipment before declaring a permanent fault.
Consumer GPS receivers, shortwave radios, surge protectors and backup batteries may be useful for ordinary resilience, but the available NOAA evidence does not show that any of those products prevents the underlying ionospheric, induced-current, drag or radiation effects of a geomagnetic storm.
How large could the economic consequences be?
The National Academies’ 2009 estimate of about $1 trillion for a space-weather-induced grid-collapse scenario is cited in NOAA’s Space Weather FAQ. It is an older scenario estimate, not the measured cost of the 1989 Quebec outage and not a current forecast of losses from any particular storm. Actual consequences depend on which equipment is affected, how long repairs take and how much redundancy the network has.
Bottom line
Geomagnetic storms can disrupt GPS accuracy, HF propagation, long-conductor infrastructure and low-Earth-orbit satellite operations through several separate physical mechanisms. The strongest practical question is not whether “a storm” affects everything, but which system, location, frequency, orbit and severity level are involved. Use NOAA’s live warnings for event-specific decisions, and do not confuse geomagnetic-storm effects with flare-driven radio blackouts or particle-radiation damage.
